Fish N Chips
I broke down and ordered the 7.5 inch Ring Swimbait mold from Bass Tackle. I have been very pleased with all their molds and really think this bait will work great for Halibut, Lingcod and Cabezon. The tail action on these baits really impress me either swimming or jigging. I hope to have some baits cast before rock fishing season opens up in two weeks and post a report how they work. I like that I can trim these baits down smaller as well, so I can easily trim it to a 6 inch bait for bass and stripers. I have been casting 6 inch fishtrap style baits up till this point but my POP molds are starting to fail. I think these ring bait will just work that much better. I am really impressed with the injection baits. I have officially crossed from hobby to obsession I think, LOL
Frank
Not to burst your bubble but this bait is a monster. The volume of plastic it uses could overwhelme you. Just cutting it down will make a smaller bait BUT it will have a BIG profile. The mold shoots different than most others as you need cooler plastic. About 290 will be good and demold as soon as you can. Put the baits in water and let it cool. If you don't do this it wants to dent at the head. Just due to the large belly area. I have guys that use it in the salt water all the time, and be assured it will get you some big lings. Edited May 3, 2015 by Frank
Fish N Chips
Thanks Frank, how much plastic does the bait take? I hope my small injector is enough,I have the 3 oz injector from Bass Tackle. I will shoot it cooler and always have a tote of water to cool the baits or myself if I get burned. I wonder if the 5 inch would have been better? I wish they made a 6 inch. I appreciate the tips, it will shorten the learning curve. I know even my 6" swimbaits (closer to 6.5"), take some plastic and a while to cool. I only have one mold and it is slow going to make many baits. I try to just do a few a day and they add up. I just do it for me and family though. I normally fish a large swimbait below with a 4-8 oz head, and a small 3-4" swimbait 18" above that as a rockfish fly. I have been happy with my success on swimbaits and hope this works out well. Frank
It takes about 2 oz of plastic. It will be close but you should be good. Oh and by the way they do have a 6" version. Edited May 4, 2015 by Frank
Fish N Chips
Thank You. I must have missed the 6 inch, but I will give this a try. It is already enroute from Bass Tackle and will be here in a few days. I appreciate the help.
Fish N Chips
I got my mold today. What a hunk of metal! I found it cast great following Franks tips. I shot the plastic cooler and de-molded as soon as I could, and dropped the baits in water. Even still they take a long time to cool, but look great. No denting and all the rings filled in. It is a sharp looking swimbait and should work great for lingcod and cabazon. Frank was not kidding on the plastic, it takes close to 1/4 cup to fill up the bait and sprue. My 3 oz injector is just enough with little left to spare. The baits will be a great way to use up old plastic, left overs and torn baits due to the size. I cast them with medium plastic so once they cure I will see how they swim. I will take some pictures and post them up once they cool. I did a red, purple and a white. I may try some black, brown and motor oil colors as well. Bottom fish do not seem to be very picky, but the action on this bait should make them bite. Fish N Chips
Here are a few. The picture makes the purple look dented, but it is an illusion. All the baits look great. I think I may try motor oil and a green next, then play with some shad colors. Hard to not go crazy with these molds, I need to see what colors work and go from there, LOL. I really like the red and the white. The red is 1/2 cup plastic, 10 drops bass tackle red, with blue and green glitter. I can not wait to try them, rock fishing season opens on the 15th!
