First Bucktail

Is that bucktail or deer body hair? Deer body hair will flare too much. You might want to try a few softer wraps to keep the hair from flaring too much. That said, you really can't tell until it's wet and streamlined.

Thanks guys. The hair is bucktail and I couldn't decide how tight was tight enough to hold the hair and not so tight to make it flair. I guess that comes with experience. I aso couldn't make up my mind on whether to tie a few strands of hair over the feathers to try and make them blend in so I just left them as is. I'll definitely be trying some different things as I go along.

 

I'd like to thank Smalljaw for posting his tying videos on YouTube. This is a knockoff of one of his patterns although his look much, much better.

I like it!!!! On that kind of buck tail you want some flare and you got it!!! If I didn't know better I would not have thought this was your first, well done!!!

I don't know anything about buck tails, ive never even used them... But seeing yours makes me wanna start!

To me it looks shorter than average, which i like... Imo, the longer styles seem to hide whatever trailer you use, probably why ive never used em

And why would you want the feathers to blend in?... The sripe pattern looks awesome!!!

Thanks everyone. This one was sort of like "coloring by numbers" since Smalljaw did all the hard work and I was just trying to copy what he did on one of his videos. The people at TU who are so willing to share what they've learned in a lifetimes worth of experience sure make it easier for those of us just starting out trying new things.

 

I intended for it to be longer JR, but that was as long as the hair was on the bucktails I ordered. Will be tying some longer ones when some of the other materials I've ordered get here. As far as trailers on bucktails I can't say that I've seen that. The old school of thought was the lack of a lot of action is what made them appealing to bass. Sort of a "finesse" approach without having to downsize.

It looks as good as any jig out there . Well done pard . Think you found another calling . Some people want a stream lined look some want a bunch of flare . Just go with what works for you . large northern buck tail will give you more lenght if you need it . Have fun .

Thanks Toadfrog. I'm definitely having fun and will probably end up with enough jigs that if 10% of them catch fish I'll have a shredded thumb for a long time to come.

 

I got these bucktails off of Ebay and they were supposed to be northern whitetails, but the hair on them sure doesn't seem that long. Thinking about trying some synthetics. You can get it in some fairly long lengths.

and like others commments, it is hard to believe this is a first.

 

Personally, I like the flair as it tends to flair and breathe as you pause or hesitate with your retrieve. Another hair that does this (breathing look) very well is Artic Fox Tail if you can find it.
