Getting Dialed In

Have you tried artist sponges for the spotting? Not the ones with fine consistent texture, but the ones with raggedy edges.  That is the method I used on the HDH crappie.

I did that in my first attempt and it was just to bold for me. I’d say if I thinned it down and  dabbed it a few times on a paper towel before applying,  it would have turned out better. I bought the natural sponges from Honby Lonby.
