Walk-The-Dog

Here's a 9 inch unweighted poplar Bumble Bee. It's really hit or miss with the wood going unweighted. You have to get just the right stock for the perfect action. It rides hangs up on top but slightly lower than normal, if there is such a thing. I also added some rattles to this one. It's been awhile since I fired up the lathe. Sure makes sanding easy.

We're getting close to the season opener here in Minnesota, can't wait to throw this one. Hope you all like.

I meant to say, it rides low for a top water bait. Sorry for the lousy write-up. I just proofed my description and it made no sense, it's late, 2:30 am.

Not sure how to edit my initial post. Thanks

If you mean , that your lure swims a little sub-surface , that might have to do with the line tie position ,.... place it a little below the chin(about the level of the front rim of the eye) , and the lure would remain on surface better .

I have a commercial stickbait by "Berkley" , that also has its tow eye right on its nose and it also submerges a bit .

diemai,

thanks for the replies and always the help you give. This bait I actually wanted to hang lower on the surface. It isn't submerged, but does hang lower and by doing so when you're walking it in it moves a lot water and makes more noise, more than a bait that rides high on the surface.

OK Bob , I see ,..... I can imagine , that this way it's kinda bulging water as well ,..........always thought , that I knew about topwaters:huh::huh: !

Thanks for info ;),...... obviously you guys over there still make subtle differences , that I had never figured out about .

thats a sweet looking bait, really like the subtle scale that was done to it. Your lures are looking better and better every time. Oh ya! the eyes look very cool as well

Thats a very nice bait, you interested in selling them? I love the idea of making a weagle type walk the dog bait, and wanted to try maple, but i dont have a lathe and can't find maple dowels. How is the poplar working for you? It seems like what you said, with the unweighted bait being hit or miss, it might not be worth it.

Basschamp, thanks for the comments. Sure I'd love to sell a few but lately my time is so limited right now I can barely keep my own life in order. The poplar has worked out great and is nice for some of the crank baits I build also but on this weagle bait I had to play around with a few different pieces of stock. I turned a couple and wasn't pleased with the action and amount of water I was moving. They still worked but there are differences. I've never messed around with maple. When things slow down maybe I'll check it out, not sure of maples buoyancy. Experimenting is always worth it, at least on bait building.

Yeah i hear you about the experimenting. Maple is more dense that poplar, and Muskie Mojo makes their Weagles out of Maple. A denser wood will make your bait sit lower in the water and will throw a lot of water, as you probably know. If i can find any maple dowels i will try them out. My local home depot sells Oak dowels, which should also be good. I will try to pick a few up and try them out.
