The speed of the action is dependent solely on the lip width. The narrower the lip the faster the wiggle. For a tight action rather than a wide action, the coffin is a good choice. I tested various lip shapes in a direct comparison and the coffin was narrower than the others. Depth is just about finding the sweet spot for the tow eye location. Too far forward or back and you lose depth. No one can tell you where this is, you have to find it by testing. Examine pictures of similar baits and start there. A heavier wood will give a tighter action than balsa. But all you need to do is spread the ballast out on a balsa lure to achieve a tighter/narrower action. It would make more sense to use a heavier density wood. Dave

I wear safety glasses all day everyday but somehow that piece got past them, maybe they slipped down at the last minute really not sure.

The rust is not in my pupil either luckily. It was a long sliver of metal and it had to be pulled out using a needle but even more disturbing was the multiple times they had to drill the rust ring over the next 2 months, having a drill bit stuck in your eye is somthing hard to get used to no matter how many times you have it done then being able to hold your eye open while they do it is even more of a mental challenge

Wow it's been a looooong time since I was on here. It's been crazy I've been working a lot and just getting back into making my plastics again. I sure feel bad I didn't know about Bojon before this his passing sure makes me feel bad I bought a kit and DVD from him on how to make tubes and with his help I have made a lot. Of hand dipped tubes and caught a ton of fish off of them. I talked to him on the phone a couple times he was a great person wish we could have met face to face. My biggest is a 35" 16 pound lake trout off one of the first tubes I made after watching the DVD he made and his kit. Rest in peace Bojon you will be sadly missed but never forgotten for the help you gave us all

You don't mention how you were applying the top coat. Since your using Solarez I'm guessing your dipping. However your applying it you seem to have gotten way too much top coat on the lure. If your dipping the baits you need to hang them up tail down and let the excess drip off the tail of the bait. In other words let it drip until it stops dripping and then wipe the last drop from the hook hanger with a paper towel, toothpick or whatever you think will do the job without disturbing the top coat on the bait. If your brushing it on the same rules apply. Some folks are putting their baits on a lure turner after the excess has dripped off to allow the top coat to self level. Just make sure it's not being exposed to any UV while allowing the top coat to self level as this will start the curing process and could result in the top coat not curing to a smooth finish. Ben p.s. If you try using scotch tape to keep top coat off the lip just be sure to remove the tape before curing. Once a top coat has cured it's a PITA to get the thin strip of tape out from under any cured top coat. Don't ask me how I know.
