I'm wondering if I've missed anything? My husband started making soft plastic baits last August, mostly for himself. Very quickly people were asking to buy them, so we got our EIN, DBA, logo, checking account, Quickbooks, etc... He has sold some to friends and this weekend we took an order to a local convenience store near the lake. I just heard today about the excise tax on lures. So I'm assuming we need to get registered, and complete form 720? We've had a business before, but it was not anything that required an excise tax. I thought we had done everything we were supposed to do to be able to start selling to other people. Yikes, have I missed anything else? I appreciate any and all input! Val

Where do you purchase these from? I tried to Google "Predator split rings" but the only ones that came up were split rings made for predators like pike.

This is sound advice. 10% excise tax is charged for any items you manufacture. Also remember that any finished product is taxable as saleable items and inventory tax is due while raw materials are a tax write off.

You should contact a CPA that specializes in small businesses, particularly lure making businesses. There's a lot to know, and lots of expensive ways to stub your toe, so pay the expert to help you, and you won't be missing something crucial. You'll need a CPA eventually so start out right.

I think the ratio depends on how concentrated you want the finished colorant to be. You can tell some companies add less powder per oz of oil and some add more. I could be completely off base though

I found some blades from China that will take .092 screws. From Countbass, they sell some on Ebay and some on Aliexpress. They have the specs of the props down near the bottom of the page. They accept Paypal. I ordered from them once and it took around 5 weeks for delivery to northeast USA. The two inch pointed props are compatible with .092. I am gambling on a few 1.5 because I told him don’t worry about checking. Figured at the worst they spark a new idea overall once I was able to get someone on the phone all was good. Now the flute music could drive a man mad though lol Now I wait

I hope you are not thinking that there is really a machine that will make baits on it own. If you are rethink what you are getting into. Cause there is not one. If you want to make baits and sell them after packaging then you have a few options. You can get your self two presto pots and a Twinjector and go for it. Another option is the shooting star. Both will do two colors but you will have to work to make the baits. You will be the machine. Even the 60k ones need someone to watch it and remove runners when time allows. I have been making baits for years now and only have hand injectors. I do have one injection press but it is only one color. It’s not faster than my presto pots and Twinjector. There’s not much in the middle for shooting baits. Not sure what route you want to take. And how many baits you want to make. With the big machine you will need to do productions runs and get custom molds. There is a clean up that will have to be done when changing colors. The other two systems will use smaller and more readily available molds. As you can see there are a lot of questions that need to be answered before you can get an idea of a machine.

Good advice here. I will add/and repeat in some cases: - set a realistic production/profit goal if its part time and you have a family. In some cases, making less product actually can increase your profit/sales - find your niche / try to bring something new or better to the market in your area - do a few things really well - don't spread yourself too thinly (I made this mistake at first) - small batch custom stuff should be better imo not cheaper so price your baits accordingly - make sure you have your stuff dialed in before going to market. Your reputation is worth more than a few bucks
