  1. Nathan, Sorry, things change sometimes. We won't be able to make it this year. Maybe next year. Gene
  2. According to Snopes.com, this one is true! Be careful... I am a victim of the latest scam which is happening in shopping mall parking lots. Two good looking young women come to your car as you are parking, one starts wiping your windshield with a rag and the other comes to your window and bends over so far her breasts just about fall out of her blouse. While you're distracted, the other one lets herself in the backseat and then they both start begging you for a ride home. Be very wary, because as soon as you start driving, one of them will take off her shirt and rub her breasts on you while the other climbs over the seat and unzips your pants. This is when they steal your wallet. I was robbed last Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, but I couldn't find them on Saturday or Sunday. Gene
  3. Mossy Maker is right. Electrical tape blends right in under the epoxy clearcoat. Do yourself a favor and go to your local sign maker and order up several hundred vinyl dots in assorted colors and sizes. These make excellent shad dots and lure eyes. You can also have gill plates made, too. You'll be surprised how little these actually cost. Gene
  4. Count me in, too. I can't wait to see Coley see Zoe.
  5. Fishbooger is right. The Murphy knife is probably the best carving knife that you can get for the money. If you buy it from Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers, ask them to hone the edge for you. I think that they will do it either at no charge or for a very nominal charge. Also, plan on ordering a strop and some compound to keep the edge on the knife. Mac Profitt and Gene Webb will take good care of you. I've done a fair amount of business with them over the years and they will go out of their way to help you. Gene
  6. Once again I had the pleasure of meeting another TU member. Bobby arrived at my house about 9:30am and stayed until around 5:00pm. Coley joined us around 10:00am. We talked for several hours which seemed more like 1 or 2. The conversation was enjoyable. I grilled some hamburgers for lunch (not as good as Coley's "Hobo" but it filled a hollow stomach). Bobby brought Coley and me one of his handmade cranks. Believe me, for no longer than he has been making lures, his work is certainly well up to par. Bobby, If you get the chance to come back, you're always welcome. Gene
  7. Try a piece of small diameter tubing (aluminum work good) about half the length of your skirt material. Roll your collar onto the tube, place your skirt material in the tube and then roll the collar off of the tube on the shirt material. Gene
  8. I'm about 20 miles southeast of Nashville. Gene

    Birthday boy

Yes, Happy Birthday, Lapala. Today is his birthday here but where he is it was actually yesterday. I talked with him through "Google Talk" last night for over two hours and enjoyed our conversation thoroughly. He is a fine and very knowledgeable individual. Gene
  10. I'm not sure exactly what you're asking but if you're asking which way the "cup" faces, it faces towards the front of the lure.
  11. Nathan is correct. I do use spinnerbait blades for lips on my Heddon Punkinseed replicas but I have not used them on any minnow style baits. Gene
  12. I "carve" the edge with a knife. If it chips off, it's plexiglass; If it curls, it's poly.
  13. Smitty, I just sent you an e-mail. Gene

Coley, You need a job; you've got too much time on your hands!

    In Drag!!

Guys, don't let Nathan fool you. He didn't just do this last Friday night, he does it EVERY Friday night! When we were there for the get-together a few weeks ago we stopped to ask directions to his house and the guy at the gas station told us to just wait and that Nathan would be there soon to stand on his favorite street corner. Sure enough, it wasn't long! Of course, now you know why Coley picked Zoe (the pig).
  16. Nerdy, My 2 cents worth: Save your money and buy a lathe with a little larger bed. You will also want to consider a more common brand especially when you need or want accessories to go with it. A little more money spent now will save you a lot of frustration later. Gene
  17. Thanks for the input guys. I do it similar to the way Jerkbait does it, too only I use my bandsaw. I was hoping that someone had a better way. Gene
  18. Any suggestions on how to remove a lip/bill that has shifted in a bait after the epoxy sets up with out damaging the lure?
  19. I use a thick piece of my desired wood and cut out the profile of the lure. I then put the rip fence on my bandsaw, adjust it to the thickness that I want and slab off the lures. Gene
  20. I was going to post some pictures but I got an error message that stated "the maximum number of attachments has been reached. Contact the board administrator"
  21. Wow! I should have posted first! The rest of you didn?t leave much for me to say. First and foremost ? I want to thank Nathan for hosting this event. It was well planned and I don?t think that we could have had a better place to meet. I know Nathan spent a lot of time getting everything ready and making sure that we were well taken care of. Those of you that didn?t make it, you missed a great time. I look forward to next year. I would like to send a special sentiment to Debbie (Nathan?s wife). She spent a lot of time preparing and cooking great food to feed the lot of us (especially me and Charlie). She took time out every day to talk with each of us and make us feel more than welcome in their home. It takes a special lady to put up with a group of men that she has never met before. Thank you, Debbie, for all that you did for us. As has been said before: it was nice to finally meet some of the people on the site face-to-face. I had already met Charlie and Coley before and both have been at my house a couple of times. They are a couple of great guys to travel with. Coley and I just couldn?t get Charlie to do any of the driving though. Wait until next year, Charlie. It was nice of David Aery to give us a tour of his jig making shop. What an interesting operation. I would like to see it in full operation. David spent a couple of hours explaining how everything worked and answering our questions. Thanks for the tour David. Dan ?KCDano? Patten is the best lure painter that I have ever seen. His work is outstanding. The patterns that he paints and the way that he blends his patterns is awesome. Right now he doesn?t carve his own baits but we are trying to get him started. When he does I definitely want one of his in my collection. By the way KC, you forgot to give me the money that I won from you when I sharpened your knife. I?m sorry that I didn?t get to spend much time talking with Dave ?Tally? Talbert. I?m sure that I missed out. We just couldn?t keep Coley away from him long enough to get a word in edgewise. Well, there?s always next year. Dave, I?m always looking for students. Jerry, thanks for providing the venue for each of us to get together and make friendships that we wouldn?t otherwise make. When we get together face-to-face, it?s because of you. Thanks, too, for the shirts and other gifts. I couldn?t finish this post without mentioning the ?Belle-of-the-ball?: Zoe. Without her Coley would have been lonesome.
  22. Jim, I make one cut with my bandsaw for my lip slot. The same would apply if you are using a scrollsaw. After I cut the slot I use a diamond bit with my Dremel to get the proper width for the thickness of my lip. The bits come in several different styles and sizes. If your lip is 3/32 just use a 3/32 bit. The bit will follow the cut made by the saw perfectly. It only takes about 20 seconds for the bit to travel through a 3/4-in wide bait. Perfect sized lip slots every time! Gene
  23. I'm looking forward to being there. And yes, Coley IS driving! Gene
