Hey Ottoman, Looks like a great start. I think you willfind it easier to manage a site without a forum, but you never know. If people find its a good place to hang around and chat about fishing in your area and about your baits more power to the forum. I tried the forum aspect but found it something else to manage while trying to run "my meth lab" (making baits) as the neighbors call it. Too many guys get into pissing matches on forums and you have to have someone step in and moderate. One less headache to deal with. Other than taht looks great to me. Keep it simple and make it easy for the customers to purchase. Keep on Keepin On,

Hey folks, yeah I know been a while since I posted. Thought I would drop my 2 cents in on the website side of things. I went though MANY layouts and finally found one that was really simple and easy to order from. I have it pretty easy when "pushing" my baits because I only make one. I look at it like this....the guys buying baits off of us are fisherman like us. They dont need a fancy pants site to buy a product. Throw up a few pics a little background info and see where it goes. I went through countless layouts that just confused me and the customer. Remember, KISS; Keep It Simple Stupid Talk to you guys later, Somewhere, butt deep in saltwater chasing trout.....

Man it has been a while since I have been at the TU site...I know...my fault...I am glad to see that TU is still providing vast amounts of knowledge on all levels of bait making. Just thought I would say hello... again...Have a saltwater soft plastics question...hit me up !

This is a bit off topic and probably needs to be in another section of the TU Boards but I had to share it: Check out this "boat" ....The Electric Lawn Chair Boat ! $8,000 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=36123&item=3678890799&rd=1 Adios,

Hey guys, I have been pouring for a while and used to pour with LC 500 Extra Strength and it makes a good saltwater bait, but even at that I think it takes a lot of action away from the bait, just my opinion. I too am a Calhoun convert and have nothing but praise for the plastic. Works Great! Better Product in my opinion and down right makes a better bait even for saltwater, with just the right amount of hardner. Just my 2 cents, Adios,

Saltwater...mine is Pumpkinseed and Chartruese + a little Catch Em Sauce never hurts.... Freshwater...mine is Watermelon w/red flake

Thanks for the praise southeasttexas. Most of my molds are Silicone with the exception of a few from del-mart which are aluminum. Thanks for letting your buddies know aobout my plastics. If you are a saltwater guy like me, Bum Baits should be making a pretty good buzz up and down the coast this year. I have over 30 guides fishing my new patterns and so far I have heard a lot of good things. Good luck and thanks for the comment !

I stir with a plastic utensil my wife bought at a pampered chef party a while back...Works Great. When you get to the point where the plastic liquid and ready to pour you should be able to pour several baits before reheating. When you reheat make sure, depending on your microwave, you dont cook to long. It just takes some practice...You'll get there. I imagine some of the veterans on this site will chime in with some great pointers as well. Good Luck,

Hello JD, Was it lumpy or REAL thick ? May not have been cooked long enough. The plasitc goes through a few stages as it is cooked and when it is ready to pour it should flow easily. I mostly pour saltwater baits which have quite a bit of hardner in them along with stabilizer and it takes it a good bit of heat to get liquified. One thing you have to watch is the burning. Using a microwave, as I do, gets you to the pouring temp, around 350 degrees, pretty quick but just a little bit over that can send you out with some smelly plastic. Good luck...practice makes perfect !

Hello nova, For Calhoun plastic you will need to go through a distributor such as Del-Mart ( www.del-mart.com ). Calhoun used to send out 5 gallon buckets to the individual pourer but due to the overwhelming demand for it from guys like us it its easier for them, and us, to go through www.del-mart.com . Delw and his folks are good people and can get you squared away. Take it easy !

New Here, and want to get started...wow I love this site!!
BumBaits replied to southeasttexas's topic in Soft Plastics
Welcome southeasttexas, Getting started in pouring your own baits is the right track to saving yourself money and creating a fun hobby. As for starting out, most will tell you to get a starter kit from Luercraft or MF. This helps you get the feel of how the process works without having to shell out a substantial amount of cash. The starter kits come with a mold some plastic and coloring usually. As for pouring saltwater baits, I have been doing it a while and it is a bit different than regular freshwater baits, due to the fact that the plastic has a lot of hardner it it which makes getting it the right temp, keeping the colors from fading, and actually pournig the bait a little trickier. You can get coloring, molds and glitter from Lurecraft which is a good place to start. Once you get started Tackleunderground is the best place to find help from guys that have been around for a while and have "mastered" the pouring aspect of things. Get you a starter kit and get pouring It's a lot of fun ! -
Thanks Delw! I figures as much. I'll keep a shakin ! PS. Got the mold. Works Great ! Adios,

Color Question : In cooler temperatures it appears that, at least LureCraft brand coloring, seperates. Example: I have a 2 fl oz bottle of chartruese that seperates into two layers during the winter. I have to shake the hello out of it to mix it up. I am in Texas and the temp doesnt get too cold but I really dont want to move all of the coloring indoors. Any ideas on how to keep coloring from seperating ? Thanks all !
