  1. I used them for a year or so and they got dirty and wouldn't clean up so I threw them away. I have gone to shrink tubing. It works the same and is way more durable than the rod wrap. Harbor Freight tools has it.
  2. I have a modified ball head that is similar to what you show. It doesn't get hung up any less then my footballs do.
  3. The best place I have found is www.fishingskirts.com. They have lots of choices and by the 100 great prices plus a standard $5 charge for shipping.
  4. I don't use it much but when I do I go to a fly shop and pick out what I want because it is not all the same.
  5. I tried using some of my old Power Pro braid. I didn't like the way it worked. I usually use all purpose thread from Wal-Mart and coat it with fingernail polish. The life expectancy of a jig where I fish is only 4-5 casts anyway.
  6. Thanks for the tips guys. Nothing is working very well. It really is a slow go. I'm sure glad that I'm iced in and have some time on my hands.
  7. I tried a little torch. It worked on some of them but melted the heads on some.
  8. I keep all of my stuff in the garage. It is unheated but insulated. It rarely gets below 50
  9. I just traded 200 jig heads to a friend for 200 of his from a mold I don't own and don't want to buy. Over 1/2 of the ones I received have some lead obstruction in the eye. I have tried a few ways to get the lead out. The only thing that is working is to painstakingly drill out the eyes one at a time. 2 questions: 1. Is there a faster way? 2. Am I likely to rough up the inside of the hook eye so I'll damage my line when I fish with them? I'm iced in and will be making baits for the forseeable future. Thanks to all of you pros.
  10. Stumpy you will pull that rubber right out of the collar when you try to cut it off. Use thread or wire.
  11. Army surplus stores and flea markets might have some cheap ones on hand. I have bought cast iron at flea markets real cheap. I use cast iron for melting and using babbitt.
  12. I use the pins also or make them when no pins are available for a mold. I don't like to tie them with the weedguard in. So I paint, etc then put weedguard in last. Sometimes I paint them with the pins left in on my homemade pins. That way I don't have to drill. I glue with superglue gel.
  13. I changed mine out once. As I remember it was just a matter of taking the screws out of the top and removing it but I may not remember everything as it was several years ago. I haven't found anything to keep it from rusting. I used to spray WD40 in it but got tired of the burning smell everytime I used it. I just keep mine about 1/2 full of lead and when it gets bad I empty it and use a steel brush on the end of a drill to buff the rust out.
  14. When I used to tie marabou I stripped it off the feather spine and tied it to the jig.
  15. You might try Do-It. When I was buying drop shot swivels they gave me quite a savings when I ask about bulk buying. How many heads are we talking about? Another place might be ZTackle.com. I just talked to the owner and he is not sure what is on the site since his former partner kept the site up. He said if you couldn't find stuff on the sit you could give him a call Monday. The business is Fin and Feather Sports Shop on S. Campbell in Springfield, MO 417 887-4680. Ask for John Cooney. He has some painted and unpainted heads.
  16. You can do it with the weedguard in place but it is a little of a pain. I for sure wouldn't rip the weedguard out and replace it with more. Can you not find a source for the heads without the weedguard already installed? Doing it with the weedguard, I'd put the hook in a vise and get me a piece of wire about 3-4" long. Put the skirt material how you want it and hold it with the off hand. Put the wire under the jig where you want the wrap to be and bring it up on both sides to where it is overlapping. You can position the material as you fit the wire with some practice. Wrap the wire around the head and material a second time. Take two pairs of needle nose pliers and pull in opposing directions. When tight cross your hands so the wire wraps on itself. You can complete another wrap or leave it with one. Cut off the tag ends and fold the wire down. Clip the skirt to size and you are done. In my photobucket album on Page 5 I have some pics of doing it with living rubber and the wire thing. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v13/JigMan/?start=80
  17. I did a web search for supertuning reels and got some info. I spent several hours doing some of my old Cs. They averaged about 30' gain in distance. 600 grit w/d, 1500 grit w/d, and semichrome polish was all I had to buy since I already have a Dremel. I also replaced the drag washers with smoothies from Heartland before he retired last year. You can check your bearings by soaking them in naptha then reoiling them and giving them a spin on a pair of needle nose pliers. I have only had to replace 1 spool bearing and no others. Mind date back to 1996 and get used a lot. Just be careful with the spool.
  18. Here is the advice I got when I asked a similar question. http://www.tackleunderground.com/forum/soft-plastics/15090-i-need-firm-plastic.html
  19. I wasn't successful posting pics here but I tie lots of jigs with wire. In my photobucket album I have a series of pics showing the stages. You are welcome to go there and have a look. JigMan - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
  20. I don't think I have ever melted lead that didn't have some slag in it. Sometimes there is a little and sometimes there is a lot. I generally get at least a heaping teaspoon full out of every 1# ingot.
  21. Here is a link for you to look at. This guy has the best by the 100 prices I have seen on the net. I just ordered 400 from him and am expecting them today or tomorrow. FishingSkirts.com, Better Product Better Price for your fishing skirt needs.
  22. I am bass fishing from a boat. The worst day I have had was with ewg hooks used in my tubes and arke heads. Please explain micro fiber for downsizing jig weight. WOW I looked up that Cabela's jig head. They sure are prowd of them. At that price it might cost $50 to fish the rip rap on a bad day.
  23. I use the light ones when I can but this is a windy spot with about a 45
  24. One of my favorite spots is a 1 mile long dam rip rap. On a good day I can get by with 6 baits. On a bad day it may be 2 dozen. The last time I fished it was with some experimental baits and I lost over 2 dozen. I have tried football, round, minnow head, arke, poison tail, and banana jigs. The banana seems to be the least hanging of the bunch. I have modified the banana to replace the hook eye and hook configuration and it is a little better. Have any of you guys found a secret jig weapon for nasty, narly, rip rap rocks? BTW: I never go after a hung up bait that doesn't have Lucky Craft printed on it someplace.
