  1. I prefer small cranks because I feel those give me the best chance to catch small and big fish. I don't fish much so when I get a chance to go I just want to get bit.

    Balsa Flatsides

Here are few flatsided cranks I just finished.
  3. Etex and flex coat are very similar in the way both behave. I like to let flex coat sit for 10min before I start brushing it on the bait. You must do 2 coats but that's not the worst thing in the world. I've not noticed any yellowing on my baits that were coated 1yr ago. It's held up well to smacking rocks, docks, and brick walls better than devcon. It's my clear coat for now until something better comes along.
  4. I was a devcon guy for over 5yrs and would not even think of using anything else. Now I'm using flexcoat hi build and it's the bomb imho. It dries crystal clear without the nasty yellowing that I got from devcon. Down side is that you must apply a least 2 coats per bait. You must let this stuff sit for about 10min after mixing or you will get runs and sags but I can coat 3 baits per mixed batch. This product is not brittle like devcon and makes the colors just pop. I hated to have to tell devcon good by but flex coat is a better product to use for my final clear coat.
  5. I've found that the thinner airbrush paints do not work as well with the crackle finish. C-tex paints seem to work much better for me.
  6. No need to heat devcon before mixing. If you have sticky spots then it was not mixed well. I brush it on thick then brush off the excess. Put on the drying wheel and let it go. No need to do the extra steps as it will self level.
  7. I would go to a couple of body shops and ask for info on the distributor of the product. You may want to try asking at the local parts store. good luck
  8. Ctex white mixed with blood red from wildlife colors. I used a tooth pick to get the smallest amount of red I could. I sprayed the pink over pearl white base.
  9. Here are a few I've just finished, nothing exotic just balsa cranks.

  11. madbass, I've done a couple of baits with the flex coat epoxy and I was not that pleased with the results. It was not as clear as the high build rod finish. I use it to coat over my sealer and so far it works fine for that application.
  12. Don't thin the c-tex, kick the psi up a little higher. You will still need to shoot several thin coats for complete coverage. Make sure you heat set each coat and if you try to spray 1 thick coat it will crack when you heat set it.
  13. After heat setting the paint you could spray a coat of createx clear on the bait.
  14. Zebra ballpoint (fine) black ink.
  15. Stay away from the g-7, it's expensive and makes a terrible lip that doesn't last. G-10 is the easiest to cut and g-11 is the hardest of the 3. G-11 is usually a translucent green and g-10 is a translucent brownish/green. I prefer the g-10 bcause it's easy to cut and finish.
  16. I'm with Mark, I needed a lip to get the action out of a two piece bait. I have some that are 3.5 inches long that I use when wading for smallies and they do kick up a fuss.

    Deep divers

These are my balsa deep divers, run 24-26ft.
  18. I believe that this is due to eye dominace. Maybe a combonation of both eye and hand dominace. I have no science to back this up just an opinion.
  19. Jann's netcraft has some small circut board lips that should work for a shallow running bait.
  20. You have to use those over some kind of base coat. I've also mixed the hi lites with a transparent base and sprayed thru my airbrush over a white base. It looks ok to me but I still need more time to play with the product.
  21. etex and flex coat are about the same product but flex coat now has uv stuff in to prevent or slow down the yellowing. Devcon 2ton is the easiest to use but will also yellow if left in the heat. If you choose etex or flex coat, two coats will be needed. I've not tried Dick Nite's so I'm no help there. I wil say that flex coat has more flexiable finish than devcon and will resist cranks (a little). A lot of the striper guys use etex.
  22. Jeff, good to see you're still hanging around. I use a long blade razor knife and heat the blade with a tourch. Slide the blade along the bottom and top of the lip and it should come pretty clean. I can't help with the name of the color. I still can't figure out what all the fuss was/is over the Bagley baits. One of the cheapest made baits I've ever worked on.
  23. wildlife colors, WASCO's house brand, c-tex, auto-air, van dykes, aqua brand. That's all I can think of right now.
  24. Devcon 2ton epoxy thinned with denatured alcohol. I mix up enough to coat 2 baits then add 4-6 drops of the alcohol to thin the mix. I brush it on with a craft paint bursh and let the bait turn for 1hr.
