  1. I use a Zebra ball point (fine) and I've never had any trouble with the smear.
  2. I hate to bring this up again but Devcon yellows in about 1 day. The higher the heat the faster it will yellow. No clear coat is the best, you just have to find what works for you. I do enjoy reading about all the different clear coats that everybody uses. It's a lot of very good info.
  3. Mark, I find all those mistakes take me to a higher level of bait building. I'm just a dumb redneck and the trial/error is the only thing I know. There is no easy way to build a swim bait imho.
  4. Clemmy, you are correct. I need to start thinking while I'm looking.
  5. Those joints are sharp, I really like the beads. What about beads on top and bottom of the screw eyes, have tried that? Get that bait out of the trash and sand it down to the first coat, then re-apply the e-tex and add some glitter. The fish could care less about a little saw dust mixed with glitter.

    wake baits and cranks

Two 6 inch wake baits and a few med sized cranks.
  7. I carve, sand, seal, paint, and clearcoat all the sections prior to assembly. I also use screw eyes in the pre-drilled hole to keep the epoxy out.
  8. You won't hit 7 feet with that bill length imho. a 1 inch lip on that size bait won't look that big as the bait is doing it's thang. You could use a 3/4 inch lip and 10/2 braided line and you might hit 7-8 feet.
  9. I prefer to twist my own screw eyes from ss wire. I've never been able to pull 1 out of a balsa bait yet.
  10. Just drill 3-6 holes (1/8 bit size) in the back of the lip and epoxy in place. I've never been able to pull a lip out of a bait.
  11. The nice thing about the circuit board lips is that you can buy some pre-cut. It saves a lot of time on a lure build. Those baits in the pic are not really fat bodies (1/2 stock was used) the pic is not that good. Those 2 baits weigh in the 1/8oz range and run pretty good but got some kinks to work out. I like the foil job you did to your baits, that takes some skill on baits that small.
  12. Pizza, the baits look great. On the thin lexan I can only give you my experience with it. You may not have the same problem as I did. You can find that stuff at hobby shops that sell model airplane kits. I'm using pre cut circut board lips from Jann's now.
  13. The lexan might bend a little but it won't crack or break. When I used for lips it was flexing just enough to break the epoxy seal and allow water to get under the lips. That why I went to using the G-10.
  14. 1/32" thick lexan might be perfect for tails. I could not use for lips because it flexes way too much. I found it at Micro Mark Tools.

John those are great, I'll take 1 of each color.

    Art piece

That there is a pretty bait with a hell of a lot of detail.
  17. Natural, the old school guys on here have been using dowels in balsa baits for a long time. I use to build my baits the same way but I've found that is a extra step that adds nothing to the bait. Most of line ties and hook hangers are brass cotter pins with 1 end folded down. I've never had a hanger pull out of a bait. I also twist SS wire around a nail to make hangers, none of those have pulled out. Just a little different way of getting the job done.
  18. You don't have to do a thru wire harness but you cannot use screw eyes. Get some 20ga stainless steel wire and twist your hook hangers and line tie by hand. A 1/16" hole will allow you to push the wire into the bait. once epoxied in place those don't come back out.

    small swimbait

My first and last try at the swimbait. 6 inches long and weighes 1.25oz made from balsa. It has the coolest action and will just crawl across the surface. What a pain in the butt to make.

That's a hell of a bait. Looks really good to me.
  22. You will find that paint is easier to spray from the gravity feed brush. I use the hp-cs and only thickest pearl paints give me any trouble.
