Moore's has these in their catalog
-
I don't have their catalogs near me at the moment, but I think either or both of Hagen's or Lakeland will have bulk brass bullet weights and brass beads....no idea on the mojo's though (although I guess you could pour em)

cool site, of course I'm down in florida now, so not too much time in an ice house recently... http://www.midarkhouse.org/articles/holmes_weighingyourdecoytoswim.htm incedentally, my folks called me last night to tell me that a neighbohr speared a 27 lbs pike in front of their house...kind of too bad to spear it, but to each their own...

Yes it's been done by some vintage lure companies...look up mercury minnow on the web. I think it might well be illegal, as it is a danger to our fisheries....

not mine, but cool way to measure equal resin/hard for epoxy

Ooops, forgot to say, I came up with a couple of possibilities: design patent, but I'm not familar with patents so I don't know if this could be extended, and trademarks. Trademarks seem strange, but say Hughsey had trademarked his table rock design..theorhetically, he could argue that a fishing lure colored chartruese with a flo. purple back was a company trademark. Other companies could manufacture this color scheme, but in theory, putting a picture of their version in a catalog or web site for sale would be a violation...they could produce, but not market. as I said I'm not sure this would work, but I bet if you marketed a shoe with a swoosh symbol you'd be getting a cease and desist letter from nike's attourney's pretty quick...

First of all let me congratulate you on the noteriety and success you've had, well earned, and your fabulous paint jobs! Idea:On your create a custom scheme page, it's really cool, but does not do your paint jobs justice! I thought maybe you could do an example page of a pattern selected and then an actual picture of how the lure turned out. Similarly, you could post a pic page of how some customer's custom creations came out (with their permission of course). Lastly, I right clicked and saw each of those colors are actually .gif files. Couldn't you paint your "stock" colors (like, say red over foil) on something flat like part of a paint stick, take a dig picture, and replace it for those gif files? that way, you could actually see what your red foil back over chartruese body would look like, rather than computer red over computer chartruesish...Basically i'm saying since their "pics" anyway might as well put in "your" pics. It might take up too much space, but I bet it would increase orders. Question: Is there anyway to protect your painting ideas? I know your table rock is widely copied, have you learned of any protection since. I think I have an idea, in theory, would be unique to finishes. An example case that is unrelated is all the gloss black lures out there....if you choose black as a color, the reeason is usually due to contrast as if does not reflect light, but rather absorbs it. So why put a glossy topcoat on a black lure, effectively making it reflect alot more light? My idea is not this one, and I'm sure others have done the flat black thing, but say no-one had thought of it...would there be a way to protect your "table rock" color or a flat black paint job? I'm doubtful, but it doesn't hurt to ask... Thanks again to all for their help, knowledge and experience, and thanx for this board!

sorry, I don't know if this stuff is any good, but thought of this post when I ran across it...might work for cleaning up lure lips for a show... http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/long25.htm

Any reccomendations for something to use as a template to pattern out the same (more or less) bait? I was thinking some light aluminum sheet, or maybe some plastic might work well as you can see through it?
-
sorry, i'm confused already...what does "Watch out - there's a lot of stuff out there called "Flexcoat", but the package I have says contains Bisphenol A" mean? is it good or bad to contain it?

Not that I even have an airbrush yet, but was looking online and I saw a couple cool accessories that I thought would be nice if you did a lot of baits:a airbrush holder that holds up to 4 airbrushes and a hose adaptor that lets you run 3 airbrushes off your compressor, as I said I don't know diddly about airbrushing yet, but I thought these would be a neat way to shoot several colors if you were into production. clemmy Brandon, Fl

Hi! I could swear that this has been discussed before, but I couldn't remember what of the four lure-making forums it was in, I searched on this one and couldn't find anything.. Has anyone tried system 3 epoxy for sealing and/or top coating their lures? any opinions/comparisons with devcon? Thanks Clemmy Brandon, Fl

I know making your own lexan lips has been discussed, but I was hoping to get together a list of companies that supply ready-made lips...I'm at present carving my baits by hand, and since I'm just out of med school, I don't as of yet have the $/space for a bench band or scroll saw, and like the idea of consistency in a lip (i've got enough varibles going on already). so far I've found the following that offer ready made lexan lips, any other suppliers you guys know of (I thought I especially might be missing whosale type companies that require a tax id to get a catalog from) Stamina Jann's Moore's Creative lures I thought barlow's might carry some, but I can't locate my catalog and they are not listed online... Thanks for the help

ok, silly question, but how about sunlight? I looked it up and most of the uv that gets through whats left of the ozone layer is that wavelength..I guess it might be slower, but it would probally work..you'd still save time as it's one-part epoxy... just thinking out loud! please give us feedback to the board on how you find the finished result those of you that are trying and/or sending baits in...
-
have you tried component systems? the ones that make most of our powder paint? havve never ordered directly from them, as I don't have a tax number, but they've got a ton of colors..hope this helps! http://www.csipaint.com/vinylpaint.htm

lol..so after posting this, I get back to the forums and I can see the pics... so ignore above, although it might mean that where you go when you click on log-in is broken somehow...I'm sorry, I couldn't find where to email a web tech problem...

ok, I'm a registered user, love the site, used to be able to see the pics on peoples posts, now for some reason I can't...I go to login, enter user and password, click keep me logged in, it takes me back to forum home, click on hard baits and a topic where people are discussing the pic of a bait pictured and I can't see it...so, I click on new topic to post this question and? I get the login page that I just logged in at, so again with user/pass/keep logged in...any ideas???

I found a great online article on this from the antique lure collecting community, please check out the rest of this guy's great site! I just look and drool... http://www.antiquelurecollectibles.com/Articles/Lure_photography_techniques.htm

Also check moore's lures, they sell a number of wooden muskie blanks, as well as the oversize lips etc..
-
If any of ya'll sell your salted lures, are you at all worried about the patent thing since it's been prosecuted before? Just curious before I create my "magic" formula

Slightly depressed...I think a lot of us dream of turning our hobby into a business...but I've begun thinking it's nigh near impossible.. Even if you come up with a great looking wooden crank that catches tons of fish (sorry to say I haven't..YET!), I don't see much hope in stepping up production and turning your design into a business. Figure a "normal" income is $20/hr... To make a respectable wooden crank: Wood cost, wire cost, lexan, splitrings, top quality hooks, epoxy, lead, paint costs trace template drill rough cut file sand insert thoughwire glue clamp drill for weight melt lead add weight cut lip epoxy lip, weight, seal wood sand airbrush 2-8 colors add detail like eyes, spots, gills final epoxy coats attatch split rings attach hooks Now I know some steps would be speeded up by doing multiple. And certain things could be speeded up by having wire prebent, lexan pre-cut, etc. but then costs go up as well.. How about individual lure tuning? This is not even taking into account tool costs, packaging costs, advertising, bookkeeping, time spent getting retailers to carry your product, printing, etc. I think you can do it pretty easily by coming up with good spinnerbaits, jigs, or soft plastics, but I don't see how you can do a quality wooden crank and turn a profit. Figure 15 minutes minimum per lure (No clue how I could do that!) but ok. that means you need (at $20/hr) to make $5 profit per bait. Add in all raw material costs and packaging etc. you'd need $10 per bait if you could do 1 complete bait ever 15 minutes and maintain that pace! And then you'd have to try and get a baitshop to carry it and talk them into beliving that billy joe jimbob fisherman will be happy to fork over $22.50 for your lure he's never heard of.... sorry for long post, just got kinda down...

nods, they have tons of cool stuff! just email em for a catalog

If you're talking about the coiled tinned music wire coils, he's right, stamina listed them in their last catalog. I know it wasn't a link you lost, because their catalog isn't online, but moore's also has them in their catalog: plain coil, weighted round and weighted keel style...regaardless if you make musky size baits, request a catalog from them, they have a great selection of components for musky baits.. hope this helps

Hullo! I was hoping someone might have a lead on stainless steel blades. All I've been able to find is non-stainless steel blades at lakeland and the one mega blade at stanmina... thanks for your help! clemmy
