making a soft plastic master from an aluminum mold
GB GONE replied to dtrs5kprs's topic in Soft Plastics
OK...you guys have confused me a little here...(Which is NOT hard lately!!!) After you pour plastic over your aluminum mold and remove it, you are pouring plastic back over the plastic (instead of RTV)???!!!! Then casting that plastic with resin!!!! I must have plastisol on the brain (I've blown through 3 gallons of plastic in less than 2 weeks) or something cause I'm not getting it!!! Please enlighten me again as I get Dave's way!!! Jim -
Hey Kid: LC has an avacado color straight out of the bottle now!!! Your on for cinnamon in my opinion. Or you can get some of LC's Amber Brown...its cinnamon to me!!! Jim PS My avacado has been green pumkin with touch of brown, yellow and 1 drop of black. I didn't write down the recipe I used to make it the one time I had to (duh!!!!!) but those were definitely the colors I used!!

Any that you add into your plastic or onto your plastic??? Some may have a "secret" ingredient I'm sure but I am going to start making my own. Once I get a "good" batch, I'll sample it out to see what everbody thinks!!! Jim

WOW!!! I just poured baits without salt or flake...

Strangly....my "best" selling colors are plain old green pumpkin, black/red flake, black/blue flake etc. It is weird but hey...the customer is always right...right!!! A buddy of mine says my "crazy" colors are just a ploy to catch fisherman...not fish!!! Wait til I whoooooop his butt with some of those "blue olive" colored baits...It will cost him then !!!! -

Awesome discussion!!!! I was relaying what the "pros" told us at Bassmaster U about baits, scents and colors. Do I use scent??? YES!!! In my plastic and on my plastic but never on my hard baits...especially those $20.00 ones !!! They should catch fish anyway, anywhere, anyhow!!!! I used to get to go fishing at least 3 times a week and I can tell you that over the years, there are times I could throw just a hook out there and catch a fish and times when the bite was real tough. The presentation of the bait (ie..stop go, yo-yo, slow retrieve then jerk, etc.) would get me a bite when I finally figured it out. Most of the time you know what bait to throw, its just fine tuning the retrieve that ends up being the difference. How many times have you thrown a topwater or jerkbait with no hits and then cast out and got a backlash or a sandwich, only to have the fish hit after a long extended time of the bait being completely still. There have been times when I have had to literally count to 60 before moving a stick bait in the cold water or no bite. So many mentioned it, confidence is the key...if you think that scent or whatever gives you that edge, you will be more in tune with that bait and catch more fish!!! Plus, line has a lot to do with it...oh, yeah..that is a different thread!!! Jim -
A lot of good information and the ability to ask very specific questions to the pros!!! Have your note pad ready with a good supply of ink. I really enjoyed the one I attended this year. There were only 60 attendees so we were able to shake hands, eat with the guys, etc...Even saw a few of them at Bass Pro later that night and they came over and talked with us...like we were big shots or something !!! Overall, there was a lot of info I already had heard but it was very interesting to hear most of the guys say...Just buy black, junebug, black/red flake worms or 3 spinnerbaits or just 2 color of crankbaits. Most of them make it seem so simple to just go out and catch fish but they gave us a lot of subtle things to do that can get you that kicker or catch fish when the bite is off. I mostly came away knowing I had way to much tackle and that was probably confusing my insticts on what to throw. Rich Tauber said it best..He said "Make a 95% purchase when you go to the store...Only buy what you throw 95% of the time!!! You will go to those baits anyway after a few casts with that new bait!!" When I get time I will submit my notes like Jerry did!! Jim

I finally (almost) bought some of Chris's (Al's worms) baits
GB GONE replied to GB GONE's topic in Soft Plastics
i've looked for a patch or some Pourers Anonymous classes but I can't find any here!!! I blame this totally on Chris (Al's worms), Jake (woodsac), Mojo (Joel), Bass8Baits (Javier), Zach (Big Z) and I have given all your names to my wife!!! She will be contacting each of you shortly!!! If all you guys would not have poured such inspiring baits, answered so many questions so thoroughly, and otherwise just made this such a good time, I never would be in this predicament!!!! Now I woefully spend my time looking for the next great color or designing the next "super" bait.....between pouring baits...All the while wondering how come I didn't start this years ago because it is a BLAST!!! Thanks guys!!! Jim PS Sure I forgot a few other that were inpirations as well...when I remember your names, I'll pass them along to the wife !! -

I read alot about fishing tips and techniques...also watch too much TV about fishing..... The best quote I have ever heard bar none is "The fisherman catches the fish NOT the bait!!!!!" I can give you the numbers of the guys I fish with that repeatedly have the exact same bait (out of the package) on the end of their rod and I will catch fish and they can't buy a bite. (Most times they use to heavy of line and it takes the action away from the bait). This goes with many tournaments also. Everbody knows what bait to use...it ends up being the guy/gal that imparts the correct action to that bait that catches the fish. I'm sure if your hands are covered with gas before you put your bait on that would'nt be to good, but my point is...no amount of scent or salt or any "super" lure will MAKE the fish bite. The action the angler imparts makes or breaks your day!!! Or, it could be my good old Irish luck..... -
Yep....before reading Dels post I moved my plastic into the house for a few hours before pouring...bingo...very few bubbles!!! Guess it was getting a little cool in the shed!!! Thanks again Del!!!!!! Jim

This "hobby" you guys got me started in has taken me away from my happy place Instead of planning out when I'm going fishing, now I have to write down colors on a calendar so I can be to "please" someone else's fish!!!??? The world is not fair right now..LOL.... Jim PS Just kidding!!!! I know this stuff is nothing in the whole scheme of today's world but a man has to have something to b#$%h about too.. -

I guess the "seige" has subsided as I have noticed many hand pour auctions have the website address right in the auction or as a big banner running through the auction....I watched the auctions through closing to be sure they didn't get shut down :!: Game on !!!! Jim PS I'm almost not sure I want people on Ebay to go to my site as many are bidding up the prices past what they could get the baits for straight from my site !! -
PS Got my gallon about a week, week and a half or so ago (glad that one is gone!!!)..I have a nice pile of plastic loaded with little bubbles on my shop shelf...all in different colors!! Jim
-
Last gallon I got is the same way...Just let it set to cool and re-cook it like 2 minutes, then stir...30 seconds...stir...30 seconds stir..so on. It is a pain in the butt however that is the only way I could get rid of the bubbles. I know the......"Your shaking it to much (only shook 1 time won't do that again!!) or to cold (70's here) or stirring with wood (always use a butter knife)"...but all of these things don't factor in!!! I am using the same technique as I always have just as StatenIsland is.... Jim
-
My local shop actually has the green olive....good job Dave...I would like to see some pics when Kid gets done with his baits!!! Might look good in a big 10" with some pearl white.... Jim
-
Kid: No luck ...Area Zoom rep has never heard of the color??!!! He called me directly but did not have any suggestions other than emailing Zoom directly...strike 3!!!
-
I hate the bucket also but as Del says...the mixing side is an advantage. i transfer my plastic into a hard plastic "slim" container that is hard plastic (like the ones from Walmart). They are made for your refrigerator. Anyway, you do have to replace the spigot on those as there is a soft plastic that will get eaten up by the plastisol. Every now and then i forget to just turn the container over and I shake it!!! Talk about bubbles, you will get a million...real PITA!!! Jim
-
Went by the "local" store, they say they never heard of that color and looked in their supply book and it was not listed??!!! Maybe it is a discontinued color???? Anyway, the guy from there is going to call Zoom for me and give me a call about the color.... Jim
-
Welcome aboard Senkoman...... Jim (South GA)
-
Kid: I don't have a recipe nor have I even seen this color but my local bait shop has 3 walls of Zoom baits so I will check them out. If they have a bag, I will grab them and send you a couple!!! Still owe you for the great tips on POP!!! Jim
-
I found that adding the color prior to heating has helped me reproduce the colors... I'm with Chris on the Zoom Green Pumpkin...I add 2 or 3 drops of brown and 1 drop of black (for 8oz of plastic) along with the green pumpkin. I don't care for the Zoom color that much but the fish like it as good as plain old "green pumpkin" out of the bottle !! jim PS I do use 22-24 drops of LC green pumpkin/8oz of plastic which is more than I use of M-F's...only use about 15 drops of their's....
-
Will: I have several bottles of GP from LC and have not had any problems as of yet. I do know that if I don't add a little nut down in the bottle and shake the crap out of it, the color comes out a little "weak" or light!! Jim
-
Welcome aboard Brad!!!! Your baits look great!!!! Look forward to your input and experience!! Jim

making a soft plastic master from an aluminum mold
GB GONE replied to dtrs5kprs's topic in Soft Plastics
Dave....great tip!!! Have you tried this with resin yet??? Just curious as it should work just the same with a few slight modifications. Its just the technique I needed for some othe molds I have a limited amount of!!! Jim -
Butter knife(s) for me also!!! Be sure NOT to use the popsicle sticks (or any wooden sticks) unless you are trying to add bubbles into your plastic. I have used this to actually help some worms float better for a carolina rig !! Jim
