over the years doing charterboat re-paints we do not strip.
pull the hooks and rings, use painters tape the lip. scuff if needed. . ive never ever had a crankbait infuenced by re-painting yet.the clears we use is acrylic, or automotive car clearcoats.
pete. we watch discovery channel and national geographic. man you fellows have many nast critters there.. im surprised and am quite sure you could tell a tale or two.
pete. theres many that begin to build before they engage the brain. with visions of grandeur. then fleabay come to dump. theres good quality in some e-bay lures. then theres the ,,,well you know.
dean. thats a lotta neat history. i do enjoy reading the past to the present. up here on l.st clair we always admired the bagleys..the db-06 and 08 series ran great. they were always on the edge from blo-outs. the monster shads were very tempermental to tuning at trolling speeds.
dean i never got into the b-flats. the guys up here wanted trolling baits. . i still have a few of the nu.5 bagleys and the top guns in my boxes. we loved the tennesee shad pattern and fire tigers on salmon and walleyes. we called them tourney baits, cause they were only run on them days. salmon tore them up bad. . they offered me 10,000 smoo bodies at one trip down. i still have a couple of them. . one thing that bummed me out.
i could not get permission to go into the shop.
yes jsc. we got incredible deals. . those folks were awesome. they even told us. bring in your labrador and visit. . . the nu.5 bagleys for salmon and the bangobees db006 for muskies. the bagley perch,s were aewsome but no longer available.. then we would go in the swamp to lakeland rubber and pick up rubber. . i miss the days of wandering and dealing in florida.
we loved our trips to bagleys factory. yearlly we made runs from canada. we would buy up all the dis continued colors and others. jo anne would bring out straxberry flats. . we never returned to ontario without 2-5 mhundred lures for custom paint. great lures but muskies ate them..the world now with global trade and asian influx, has decimated the industry.
well its still cold here. installed a new fan motor ,blew that up. its snowing,2 above zero. i wish i was a bear or a groundhog. thats mighty cold for tennesee and georgia. im sure your shivering.
rj. i am on electric. no open flames with lacquers. the electric meter is spinning. pete i can only wish for that sunburning heat. i believe your minus 7 is celcius. were on the fareinheight brrr.
many fail to realize. sealing can depend upon the wood types. also water temps factor into the mix.. lure maufacturing becomes a process. time becomes money... e-bay can become a dumping ground for over zealous folks that feel they have the newest rage. most lure makers that manufacture for sale have spent years struggling before becoming mainstream.
over 20 years we have painted raps. pull the hooks, tape the lip painters tapes. use wh/ lacquer prime. it etches the clear coat and spray away. . as downriver stated it normally will not affect action. . quality clears are recomended for finish coats.
depending on lip angle and depths needed. our woodies have the screw eye thru the lip into the head, but they are normally created for shallower depths 5-8 ft. on our larger version thumper we achieve 17ft trolling with the same application. to achieve beyond those depths lip angles and pull ties as you mention need change. look at a tuff shad application. that may solve your needs.. as for cotter you will be ultimately doomed unless the pin end is embedded as other lures into the first hook hangar.
im still sold on sanding sealers. its much faster dry time. and if the paints tooth ridden theres no paint peel.. we have taken chunks out of lures with channel loks. then run the lures with exposed wood. the remaing coating held no problem. the apparent issues would remain. what woods were used in application. we use mainly cedars and honduras mahoganys. . i am intrigued in foams, but then again they wont be woodies lol.. the paints we also use require ventilation. .
great thread pete. i normally put a spot on my tennessee shad . others we depend upon contrast bars. we do put red under the throat and on the undeside of the tail. im still chuckling at your post .,,, about the girlies.
