  1. While your problem may be caused by any of the above referenced factors, it could be as simple as how you mixed your envirotex lite. Failure to mix it properly or transfer it to a new container prior to application (because sometimes unmixed portions of the etex stick to the sides of the original container) will most definitely result in fish eyes.

    Inspired by spoopa

Ditto what JBlaze said. Those are very sharp.
  3. The essence of bait building....having a need and being able to go down to the shop and build it. Really sharp baits, Mark. I like the one in the middle the most.

    New Arowana Dragon color

Really nice bait. It makes you want to pick it up and look closer at it.

    some new ones

You're darn right these are excellent. This one has subtle shading, is carved nicely without being overdone, and the bait just pops when you look at it. First class work, Jody.
  6. I like the profile on this bait and nice job blending the natural grain with the scaling. I bet it runs good too.

    10 inch Alewife

Thank you guys, very much. You're all very kind. The gill plates were made by stenciling and the paint was created as follows: White base coat. Gray faded over the back and shoulders, very lightly. Spray darker gray over heavier netting. Apply fine scaling material over the entire bait: then mist silver pearl over the sides only. Apply large scaling over the back and shoulders: mist gold pearl over the back but only near the edge of the shoulders. The head details came from a stencil and were painted in layers with a finally overlay of darker gold pearl above the gill plate near the eyes. Belly: Fine scale material with light blue pearl shot heavy on the belly over the white. (Light blue pearl is a very subtle color and requires a lot to get a pronounced effect). Fin: Made stencil and shot it two layers; gold pearl and white trim Eye:. I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you. 3 finish coats of epoxy. 3 others were laid down during the painting process between layers...give the bait a bit of depth.

Weighted; VMC cone cut hooks. Hand-painted the eyes. Eye is anatomically similar to the alewife.

    Hand Carved Walleye

The detailing is beautiful, but the paint work is what caught my eye. There are certain species whose colors are very difficult to capture....the walleye is one of them and you nailed it! Great work again, Douglas. -Vince
  13. You can cut the lip slot while the stock is still square. I have never had any problem with "chipping" near the lip slot while turning the wood down to the right shape. Its a bit tricky to cut it deep enough so that when the stock is rounded via the lathe, the slot is the right depth. With a bit of practice it isn't that tricky though. Also lathe-made baits are somewhat more forgiving that ordinary cranks when it comes to lip size, angle and installation. Try to be sure to cut the lip slot on the appropriate side of the stock. You will want the lip slot on the belly of course, and you will want the belly to have the screw eyes installed across the grain for the strongest bond.
  14. Just an outstanding bait!

I like it! I think you're starting to develop your own style, Jody. Great work.

    The Trio

Beautiful paint work! I bet those will all get smashed!
  19. I've tried at least a 1/2 dozen different types. I've found none that will retain their shine well after clearing with any type of epoxy. Instead they will "flatten" out to a silver. Even foil will at times "fog" when cleared, depending on the humidity and other factors at the time of the application of the epoxy.

    Half & Half Series II

I like this. I saw the video on it too. It runs great!
  22. Did this pearl scaling with some new netting I came across recently. I wish I could have found more of the stuff because it has a bit of stretch to it and you can lay it over a bait nicely. I bought all they had left, which was 3 yards. I've used it on a few baits recently and I like how the scales are sort of clam shell-shaped.
