These are really nice. I like the pattern on the top one the best and I especially appreciate the others you posted in the same batch that are "experimental." That is what makes this hobby fun and I'm with you on experimenting. I love doing it and I learn a lot from doing it too. Great work, great baits.
  4. May I introduce you to my mother-in-law?
  5. Shane8, clean your gun thoroughly with lacquer thinner. Some airbrushes are shipped with slightly greased parts both inside and out. The PS900 I purchased recently was like that. The grease will give you problems till you clean it out. If its still spitting, try either thinning your paints a bit more or turning up the air pressure, or both. Also when working close for fine detail remove the nozzle cap from the tip of the brush. That cap tends to collect overspray until the pressure blows it out (onto your work). At low pressures it tends to collect more overspray within that cap than normal because the paint isn't being thrown out as hard since you normally turn the pressure down to work close.
  6. The straw method requires that you get your tongue pierced. The tongue stud is rapidly inserted and withdrawn from the straw as the artist forces gusts of air through the straw, thus creating a fine speckling effect with a more predictable pattern than that produced by stippling. I won't engage in this method of application because my well-chiseled body is a temple, which I refuse to despoil by way of piercing.

Nice work, Jed. I like that fin on top.
  8. I am certain the Lake Erie smallies would slaughter that thing. Send me an email at vc1111@comcast.net. I have some info for you that I'm sure will help you out. Vince
  9. One of the variables that must be considered when building musky baits, as opposed to most other species, is trolling at speed. The belly weighting in a lighter wood such as the one you've chosen, becomes an increasingly important variable as the trolling speed increases. Lighter woods, meaning basically anything much lighter than poplar, will produce a bait that will rather easily "blow out" when trolling, although they might cast okay. Looking at the body you posted, I would suggest that you might consider cutting in the lip slot prior to the shaping/carving process so that while the stock is flat, you can get a cut that is perfectly perpendicular to the horizontal axis of the body. After the baits gets rounded a bit and especially if it is tapered from from to back in any way, it can be problematic to cut a perfectly perpendicular lip slot.

Please post the belly shot of this bait. It is just amazing.

    Yellow Perch

I've probably looked at 20 or 30 thousand baits in the last 10 years or so. This is, hands down, one of the top 2 or 3 I have ever seen. I cannot believe you're going to take that beautiful thing and hurl at a creature with the temperament of a muskellunge! Outstanding artistry from the nose to the tail and the back to the belly, Douglas.
  12. Sweet little thang, isn't it? That Mac valve give you super latitude and the access to the needle in the handle lets you blow it out faster between coats. Just hold it back and give it full pressure with the mac valve. For the price that gentleman is offering them for, you simply cannot go wrong.
  13. Sorry to hear about those few shipping problems. I will say this, that is one fine airbrush and the price is surely right. If you haven't tried one, you'll get a great price from this guy and that airbrush will probably take your painting up a notch or two. It is capable of producing some fine lines and fine fades. I have an Iwata Custom Micron Plus and the PS900 will go toe to toe with it...for about 1/10 of the cost! I like his price on the spare needle/nozzle package too. For about $8 you get both! Go price the nozzle alone for an Iwata. Also the PS900 has capability for both a 2mm and a 3mm needle, which allows you to spray some heavier pearls, etc. I bought one so far from that site, I'm buying another soon and my brother has purchase four so far.

Nice work. That is a pretty tough profile to carve.

    7 cm sinking

I like the profile on this bait and that lip appears to be the perfect choice for the optimum action for that body shape. I bet you're going to be very happy with the action it has. I like the colors too.
  16. I settled this question for myself years ago. Now bear in mind, I have well over 40 years experience on the waters and I pay strict attention to the details when I'm out there. So...what is required for the big dudes? How can one consistently haul in the true hawgs? Does bigger mean bigger? Huh? Well, does it? Do you feel lucky, punk? The answer is the bait itself is utterly irrelevant. Its the garb, the attire, the threads, the fashion that counts. Oh, now don't get the wrong idea here, my friends. You can't just open the pages of LL Bean, throw down your credit card and expect to catch fish. No, the true monoliths of any given species are onto that game. They know posers when they see them. In order to consistently catch true trophy class fish, you must at the very least, have a lucky T-shirt. There I finally said it. The cat is out of the bag. The secret is revealed to the world. Fish species will now begin to decline on a global basis. Famine, starvation, pestilence, will surely follow. So what. We'll all die healthy from eating a low fat diet of rice and thick fish fillets. My weapon is a Bruce Lee T-shirt. Oh, yea! And don't even think you can simply duplicate my choice. The fish will know you're disingenuous and shun you, your boat, your lures, your friends, and your offspring. Acquiring the "secret" mojo garment is a quest. It requires hours of experimentation. (At one point, I would stop every twenty minutes or so and do a complete change of clothing on the water...new underwear, including Spiderman Underoos, new socks, you name it). the process may take years. But when you find that magic hat, that magic shirt, or those special Fruit Of The Loom underpants, you have found Nirvana. Suddenly, when you hit the right combination, the right ensemble of clothing, your success rate arcs skyward. You have "arrived." The guys at the boathouse and/or the various launch ramps speak of you in hushed terms and have to fight the urge to follow you around the lake, just for the privilege of watching you boat fish after fish after fish. The woman will love you and want to ravage you again, and again, again You will be famous and respected. You will get into all the best restaurants and be invited to all the right parties. Oprah will comment on you and repeatedly invite you to her show, but of course, you will respectfully decline. Requests for interviews from the major news wires and websites will be so commonplace that it may become problematic to even send declinations to them all. "How is it you do not see the grasshopper at your feet?" Big bait vesus little bait? That you would ask that question is proof that your quest has begun, Grasshopper. You are still a student and have not earned the right to burn the dragons in your forearms...yet. "As quickly as you can snatch the swimbait from my hand." *in the distance a gong sounds*...Fatfingers drops into the lotus position and contemplates his choice of topcoat... "Etex or Devcon?....Etex or Devcon?....ommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....ommmmmmmmmmmmmmmm"

Great colors! The Lake Erie smallmouth love this color pattern.

    Balsa Flatsides

Beautiful baits. I'd like to try them all.
  21. Thanks for the replies. Sinbad, its a medium diver. When casting it will go about 6 to 8 feet and when trolling about 10 to 12.
  22. From poplar, weighted. Pink, purple pearls and a a bit of blue undertones.
  23. Thanks for the comments, you guys, I appreciate it.
