  1. Just caught a bit of the infomercial for the Ronco Showtime Rotisserie. It is an oven device that cooks chunks of meat up to 15 pounds! Naturally, I immediately thought, "That would make a great motor for the bait wheel." I'm tired of repairing the BBQ motors available at Walmart. Anyone know of a good reasonably price motor? I'm considering the Ronco, but I'd either have to hunt one down at a garage sale or pay the hefty shipping if I buy one on ebay. Then I'd have to strip the motor out of the thing. Any ideas? Anyone use the Ronco Showtime motor?
  2. That's a great tip!. I'll have to try that. I still have to figure out a way to get a clean recess hole on the baits that I do not foil. I might try taping over the wood prior to drilling. Thanks for the compliment. I really appreciate it.

Jaraal, I really like your work. I think you have come up with your own unique style and that's not easy to do. Keep up the great work.
  14. It's amazing how well the blues and the gold work together on the first one, rj. I like them all.
  15. I recently had detailed discussions with Tigger and decided to try Envirotec again. It has a much longer working time, but it is not as hard a finish. That can be disadvantage as far as getting lures completed, because the cure time is about 2 or 3 times longer. Devcon 2 has the advantage of hardness, but that can be a problem when it comes to tuning lures. The brittle nature of the Devcon can cause it to crack when bending a line tie attached directly to the nose of the bait when you are tuning the bait. Envirotec has much more flex to it even when fully cured and has less tendency to show hook rash on baits trolled at higher speeds for longer periods of time. Therefore, envirotec will allow longer "pot life" but will slow the overall process of finishing a lure because each coat is thinner and requires more curing time between coats. Overall, I'm going to stick with envirotec for now. It fogs less, but it more susceptible to dust boogers in the finish. It is softer but sags and runs easier. There are more tradeoffs than you can shake a stick at, but overall I like it better...for now.
  16. That's a trophy! Way to go, rj!
  17. Pete, I place the eyes where I need them as long as the contour is not too radical. However, a little contour is okay, even if the eye does not lay flush. Any exposed area on the sticky part of the eye that won't lay flat is filled in with envirotex anyway if you apply three or more coats. I've recessed them also, and I find that its tough to use the forstner bit without tearing out a bit of the wood around the eye, which usually shows somewhat no matter what you try to do to cover or fill the tiny void where the bit tore out the wood. So I try to avoid recessing when I can. Besides, the envirotec or Devcon2 tends to build up around over the the eyes and gives a nice bump on the sides of the head adding to the realism. Hope that helps.

    hairjigs and jigs

Nice tight work! I bet the smallies would smash those
  19. Thanks, SCT. First I made the general shape on the lathe. Next I cut the head at a slight angle (note that the front is not perpindicular to the center line of the bait...in other words, the top of the mouth extends out farther than the bottom of the mouth) To actually shape the mouth, I used a forstner bit and drilled a 1/2 inch hole straight into the mouth, and then tapered the hole back to the outside rim of the mouth with a rotary tool and a bullet-shaped sanding stone.
