Crankin - a pic would be great, I plan on building a booth soon. Jamie - by runner do you mean the rod that fits into the rotiserie? Do you use that bracket for painting as well, or just top coat drying? Thanks for the help guys. Mike

Hey Cheese - What do you use to hold the lure while your painting? especially when your doing detail?

Hey Pat, I live in Barrie Ontario and I picked up Nu-Lustre-55 at Home Depot for about $20. I haven't used it yet (soon I hope), but heard good things about it. Oh yah, Way to go to our Home boy G.S.P.!! What a but whoopin he put on Serra!

Hey guys, what kind of clamps do you use (and in what ways do you use them) throughout the crank making process? I'm using forcepts(sp) with magnets with my rotiserie lure turner. I'm setting up my shop from scratch, and would like to all ready have the necessities before I need them.

Jamie - Thanks for the pics. I get it now (I'm very right brained and a picture means a bazzilion words to me ) Vodka - Man, were you right about the glue! Finally got around to making the jig - added sawdust to wood glue - 48 hrs later still wet. Of course after thinking about it, if large amounts of wood glue stay in a liquid form in its container, why would harden unless applied in thin amounts. Anyways, picked up some bondo today - that should work.

Hey Kribman-When pike season opens, early May to mid May, (depending on lake location) I like to throw big jerbaits slowly in typical bait fish color (black top/silver sides, or mostly white) and bigger spinnerbaits (white and white/chartruese with plastic trailer) from 1/2 oz to 1 oz. As the Summer and water heat up, I retrieve faster and deeper. In the spring I slow down and fish in 2 - 10 fow. Find the greenest vegitation with new buds on top, letting the jerkbait just sit there suspended for 30-60 seconds if the Pike are finicky. When the "dog days of Summer" roll around try trolling deep weed lines 10 - 25 fow depending on time of day/feeding activity. As usual, the bigger the bait the bigger the fish. I've never been to chimo outpost Lodge, hopefully there will be some nice Smallie fishing, you will likely get those as well and you can add top water (popR's) Senko's (green's/brown's/black's) and Tubes (same as senko colors) to your game plan for them. Hope this is what you were looking for. Good Luck!

If somebody posts a repetative question or remark, and it really annoys you, just think......did anyone ask me my opinion? Maybe this person is learning how to use these boards. We don't know age, education, background. People throwing out answers, or directing them to the search function......Is a positive thing. Just saying. This place is great place to hangout. Thank-You

Holey Maguiver Jamie ! I would need a book of instructions and a fold out 2`x 2` color illustration board! . My drillpress does turn 90 degrees though, If I could controll the depth of the bit, I might be getting somewhere. Any possibility of a pic? vodkaman - I picked up the glue and sawdust - I think I'll try it and see what happens, yah never know. My co-worker said to use as little glue as possible and the sawdust soaks a lot of it up, he made jigs like this for his work shop.

OK, since I all ready have the regular router table, I think I'll try danderson's idea. At least I'll be able to get a working copy of my idea before I spend more money on a horizontal router. To make the jig, would I make it simular to the way I made a spinnerbait mold to pour lead in? I poured plaster into a container, pressed my original sb half way into mold, let it dry, coat the mold and pour the other half. Therefore having 2 halves and a cavity to place the bait in? Then I would sand the entire jig to the curvature of crank? Am I getting the idea? what would I use instead of plaster? A guy at work suggested a cheap sollution would be to use white glue and sawdust, just mix and pour? Is there a reason why I can't use a regular 1/8" router bit I picked up for the dremel? I ran some cuts with it in wood and it seems to do what I needed.

I should have posted this question before I went out and bought a drill press and router table for my dremel! LOL! oh well, I'm sure they will still come in handy. Jamie - If you could post the pic that would be great! I did a search on horizontal router tables and now understand why that will work. Should I use some type of liquid plastic to make the jig? any suggestions? Thanks guys, this is exactly the help I was looking for

Jamie - If I can make my idea work, I deffinately want to be able to do a number of these. I'm not sure I see your idea. Are you saying instead of my router table being bolted to my bench flat, I should put it on its side? I'm not sure I see how this would solve my inconsistency and depth issues with the bit? Could you explain more please, I'm not very mechanically inclined, and I'm not trying to be difficult!

d3 - excellent! So the flexible material would form around the crank, using it as a guide for my dremel? What about using several coats of epoxy over the crank with some kind of barrier (any ideas?) around the bait so I could remove the shell once it dries? I knew I wasn't looking at it the right way! Thanks. PB - keeping it under my hat for now. Mike

Hey guys, I'm trying to put a groove down the back of some of my old cranks. I have a drill press and router table for my dremel tool, but am having a hard time making a consistent cut 1/8" wide x 1/32" deep x 2" long. I guess I need to make some sort of frame around the lure keeping it in place and running it across the router table, but because the lure's back isn't a 90 degree angle, the depth of the router bit will change. I don't know if I'm explaining myself very well, and might be making this way more complicated than needed. Any thoughts?

Yah, I saw 3 parts to the series. Great info, hard to believe Rapala alowed it. I'm in the middle of replacing my master bath. Maybe the old tub needs to be recycled! hmmmmmmm.

Thanks Spike-alot of info thier, guess I wasn't looking for it in the right way. I was thinking aquarium because I would like to be able to view/record the lure from the side having the lure running from left to right, but dont think a regular aquarium would be big enough.
-
Hey guys, anyone use an aquarium to test your cranks? Could a water pump(like a pond pump) pointed at a submerged crank give a good idea how true your crank runs?

Spike-I picked up a sample pack (8colors @1/2oz) of each opaque/clear/metalic airbrush paint. Figured this would get me started. I've picked up a respirator and I'll use it regardless of what I am spraying. I'm also in the middle of changing over another cupbared into a spraybooth. I already have a large inline fan (240cfm I think) that I want to hook up on the bottom of the booth and then run in through a homade charcoal scrubber. The scrubbed air will be recirculating in the room. Is that ok even with enamels? or do I have to vent outside(that would suck). Rlcam - It's funny you mentioned the time. I can't believe the time and money that has been flowing out. I originally told my wife that this would save me money. HAHA yah right! Delusions of grandure! The good thing is I'm enjoying just learning about this stuff. I can't wait untill I actually start making stuff. I hope to take some pics and document my learning curve for those that are interested.

Thanks for the welcome guys. B&B - Yah, I'm gonna keep an eye on the temps for sure. The cupboards about 5' long x 2'wide x 3' wide, so I think there's enough space to keep it cool, unless the compressor ran continuously. PB - Those handcarved swimbaits are sweeeeet. I hope to someday be able to make one. Are there smaller sized swimbaits out there? Most of the ones seem pretty big-too big for bass.

Hey guys! New to T.U. and new to tackle making. I've daydreamed for countless hours of my own lure designs/ideas. I'm now doing my homework...have an airbrush on its way. Converting my little workspace in the basement into a small tackleshop:wink:. Picked up a pancake compressor 4gallon, can't believe how loud it is.....almost crapped my pants the first time it kicked in when I wasn't expecting it! LOL. So I cleaned out one of my cupboards and lined it with carpet and underlay, put in a vent whole and it dropped the decibals down a bit. Anyways, this is a great site! so much info flowing around, the co-operation and support from everyone here is outstanding! A quick question. Is there a crankbait that swims up/down as apposed to side/side?
