  1. I recently took on this project. I made some nice motoroil stix. They were almost the same as Berkeley's motoroil. The only problem is that they changed colors after a week or so. They no longer have a chart. tint to them. Therefore, I think it can be done, but you'll have to find the right dyes to do it. Out of curiosity, what formula did you use??? I used a combination of Del's motoroil and LC amber. I don't remember the ratio between the two off the top of my head (I have it written in my formula book at home). I do know that I used a lot of motoroil and very little amber (I think 15 drops of MO and 3 or 4 amber). Also, I use salt and sugar flakes (from senkosam) to get the weight for my stix. Eric

Don, Do you have a good recipe for yammy's chocolate??? I've been trying to match it but every time I start to load it with gold glitter the bait gets a yellow tint to it. Eric

    gold glitter

I was wondering if anybody could help me locate some gold glitter? I am looking for some the same shade as Del's but in 0.015 size (Del only carries 0.008 and 0.035). I've tried LC but it has too much of a yellow tint to it. How does MF and Senko Sam's glitter compare? Thanks, Eric
  5. Rodtrader, Where are you located??? I have river front property right outside of Harrisburg. I pour soft plastics and am starting to build rods. Send me a PM. Eric
  6. I once had a really good link to this stuff but I can't find it now. Do a google search for deer hair popper patterns or something like that. Here are a few links I just found. I didn't completely read them but they look like they may help you. Best advice I can give you is to practice on a hook several times before you try it on a fly that you've put time into. You don't want to screw up a good fly with inexperience. http://reel-time.com/pattern/pattern.php?uid=38 http://flyfisherman.com/ftb/chdeerhair http://www.flyfishersrepublic.com/tying/stacking-deer-hair/ Eric

    motoroil stix

I completely agree with you Del. The salt did change the color a lot. What I'm having problems with is that they were fine for a few days then the green hues were gone yesterday. Maybe I'll drop one of them in the river tonight and see what it looks like (one of the many advantages to river front property...hahaha). I may just have to hold off on this color until I figure it out. I was also thinking about adding a tiny amount of green highlight to it and see what that does to the color. Eric
  8. I had a customer request motoroil colored stix. I made a couple of them earlier this week and was planning on showing them to him this weekend to make sure they turned out the way he wanted them. When I looked at them last night I noticed that they weren't motoroil anymore. They are rootbeer colored now (all the chartreuse is gone). I used Del's motoroil dye. I put about half the dye in before I heated the plastic and about half of the dye in after I heated (I wasn't sure how much I'd need or I would've done it all before). Has this ever happened to anybody else? Why did they change colors after a couple days? How do I fix this problem? Eric
  9. saint, what kind of respirator do you use?? Eric
  10. I just bought a swimbait mold from lurecraft and poured a few to test over the weekend. I used a 1/8 ounce round jig head and the bait wanted to spiral as I retrieved it. I was wondering if I just need to use a heavier jig head, different shaped jig head or if there is something else I'm doing wrong??? I used MF supersoft plastic and loaded it with salt to make it stiffer and to add weight. Below is a link to the mold I bought. Also, if I retrieved it very slowly (like pulling along side the boat) it was fine and had nice action. Thanks, Eric http://www.lurecraft.com/catalog.cfm/molds/plastic-molds/swim-baits/5x828:1929
  11. yeah. This has been discussed many times (you can do a search for it). Basically, you have to pour the first color before you put the mold together (don't fill it quite the whole way and don't get too close to the spout or you won't be able to pour it correctly). Then pour the second color with the mold closed. It takes practice (especially with a 4" bait) but it can be done. Also, make sure the plastic is very hot to get them to fuse together properly. Eric
  12. Could it be that the plastic level is too low after 200 baits? If it is happening at the same point more than once and (as jmik said you've only used each mold 5 times) I'd have to think that it has nothing to do with the molds. I'd make sure the plastic level isn't too low and that you're getting proper pressure from the pot as the plastic level changes. Just my thoughts though. Eric
  13. Do a search for it. I know this was discussed a while ago but I don't remember what the formula was. Eric

    how many molds?

ok...I don't feel so bad now. I was looking at someone's website from TU and they only had 5 or 6 baits and I was starting to wonder if I was just going overboard with this thing.... oh, mine are a mix as well. about half are aluminum and half RTV and one epoxy mold. Eric
  15. Just our of curiosity...how many different molds do you have? I currently have 17 and sell lures from 13 of them. I was just wondering how many molds different people have and where you draw the line. Eric
  16. I bought a bunch of different scents to test. LC's tournament scent was one of them. It wasn't my favorite scent but it smells like a typical fishing lure scent. If you want the stuff I have send me a PM. Eric

    stirrer

I know there are posts that mention this but I was wondering if someone could lead me in the right direction for a DC motor for mixing? What specs should I look for? Where can I buy one locally? How much should I expect to pay? Thanks, Eric

    color help

I just got a request for some baits in yamamoto's color #224 (chocolate with black and gold flake). I was wondering if anybody has made this yet or of someone could lead me in the right direction to get started. http://yamamoto.baits.com/cgi-bin/order/224?ufGUye5I;;195 Thanks, Eric
  20. I just bought the trial size oomoo30 from smooth-on. I made molds on Friday and they look great. Hopefully I can pour some baits with them this week now. Smooth-on was reasonably priced and I got the RTV very quickly
  21. what size bags do you use the most? I have baits ranging from 4" to 7" and would like to buy two or three sizes of bags. What would you guys recommend? Eric
  22. What dyes/formulas are you guys using to get black and blue plastic? I am trying to make jig trailers and black and blue beaver baits but my black is really smoke and my blue is pretty translucent as well. Is there a good dye out there that makes good colors without using half the bottle? Thanks, Eric

    POP molds

Todd, Do the tails on the cut tails pour with the mold closed? I was considering making a mold for them but wasn't sure if I'd be able to get the tails to come out right. Eric
  24. Also, how big is the bait??? The 4" baits are harder to do. If you can, start with the 5" until you get used to it. I started with the 4" and had only got 6 or 7 out of 10 to turn out right until I got used to it (which took a few months.
  25. Del, Do you have a projected date that you plan on having it ready by or is it still up in the air? Eric
