    Waterbug (underside)

leave it alone! looks great the way it is.
  2. paint brush. with some practice you can get some nice effects.
  3. epoxy has worked the best for me to glue halves together. wear a dusk mask to be on the safe side. the dust clings to everything. i wear a pair of coveralls when doing the cutting. cuts well with a bandsaw. scroll saw has a tendency to melt the material. carves easily if the blade is sharp.
  4. made a swithwick devils horse type prop bait and was wanting some opinions on the best all around color. i'm thinking black. i think it would show up better ( from the fish view ). i have one for years that i painted black on the bottom and have had pretty good luck with it.
  5. can anyone put me on to someone who might be willing to trade a custom swimbait rod build for some custom swimbaits?
  6. just checked out the gallery pics. nothing wrong with those paint jobs! photos look pretty good too!
  7. welcome to the club!. it's a learning curve for sure. i thought my first ones were great looked like crap in the gallery

    Pvc

looks like you got it! lot less problems than with wood. wear a dust mask when you cut the stuff. the sawdust gets everywhere!

    Pvc

i don't think that is the right stuff. i rarely find any voids in the pvc ( cellular vinyl pvc ) i use and never " bubbles". also it is not light. a 1" x 6" x 8' board is probably heavier than a poplar board of the same size. also it is not the pvc decking. Lowe's and Home Depot here sell it. try a building supply store and ask for pvc millwork. it comes in dimensional sizes and brick molding shapes.

    Pvc

thats the stuff. it has a hard outer skin ( about 1/64" ) that you need to cut or sand off

    snake bait

i had someone ask me about making a copperhead snake hardbait. now i can't remember who it was guess i'll have to use it myself total length with the plastic tail is 17". 2.3 oz. took it down to make the video and had a bunch of little kids laughing and jumping around when they watched it. that was as much fun as fishing it, well, almost.

    little bluegill

hand carved from PVC material. hand painted with brushes.

    little bluegill

made this little bait for a lake with lots of bluegill and some decent size bass. try it out as soon as the water warms a little. 4" end/end. 1.3 oz.
  15. you should do a " float test" on the piece to see where the top of the piece is due to bouyancy. put it in some water and mark where the top of the piece is, then put the ballast on the bottom.
  16. by " cumbersome", do you mean heavy or that it doesn't swim well? to get it to sink you have to have enough ballast to overcome the bouyancy. my 6" baits generally weigh approx. 2 oz. remember to keep the ballast as low in the bait as you can. this will keep the side roll to a minimum.
  17. cellular vinyl pvc. google it to get more info. it's all i use for baits. easy to carve, sand. no grain to deal with, waterproof so it won'f absorb water. consistant mass and very bouyant. go to a building supply place ( i get mine at Lowe's ) and ask about pvc exterior millwork.
  18. found this gift bag at the dollar store and thought it would look great as a finish for a bait. the bag cost me 59 cents and can get enough for 3-4 lures probably. the bag is a paper-backed mylar material. i cut it into pieces and soaked the pieces in hot water to soften the paper backing. then i rubbed the backing off leaving just the mylar film. then just used a spray adhesive to apply the mylar and clearcoated with d2t to seal it. the gill plate and head i used gold foil on and touched up the back and belly with a little paint.
  19. thanks guys, it's nice to make the magazine but better still to get comments from other bait builders. i sent them the lure at their request so i can't post a pic ( forgot to take one ). like the picture i posted but smaller ( 6" ). have no idea how this came about. just got an email through my website from the photo editor saying they were doing an article on lures and asked for a trout swimbait. Mike Bromelow ( Muskiesnax ) is featured in the article with his 'sucker' bait and i got a side billing, haha. small picture but it's still pretty cool.. .
  20. one of my trout swimbaits is in an article in the March issue of field&stream magazine, it's one of my earlier lures when i was using the Kevlar string joints. i've switched to a through-wire hinge system that i now use ( not as much work). still, kinda cool to see something you made in a national publication.
  21. same here. the acid brushes from harbor freight were not very good. bristles came out too often. i use the Oatey acid brushes from Home Depot. they cost more but rather spend a little more than to ruin a finish with an unnoticed hair! i store them in a jar with acetone and keeps them usable for many uses. just change out the acetone when it starts to get cloudy.

    Wire

i use the same wire from Ace, and have found it at other places as well. comes in 30' roll in a yellow blister package. says ' Hillman' on the back bottom corner. i'll have to check Harbor Freight to see if they have the same stuff. easy to work with.

    double-jointed rat

made this one for a basser in Japan. 6" ( not including the tail ). nylon whiskers are from a broom, ears are nauhgahide ( sp? ) ( that fake leather stuff ) from the bottom of my recliner (any source of materials are fair game ) .
  24. of course, got to find some way to pass the time here at the home ! actually tested it first before adding the fins and it swam good. wanted to see if the fins would effect the action ( don't seem to make much difference ).the tail was my biggest concern as it might have hindered the movement and i made it removable so i could just use the fibetts i have previously used. they work good. i was just experimenting with a different look.
