Found this hiding in a piece of cedar!
StoneCoal Tackle replied to StoneCoal Tackle's topic in Hard Baits
Thanks guys for the kind words, it feels good to work on a lure again. Heres how I think I will proceed............ I'm thinking of sinking this egg weight in the belly at this approximate location and have the screw eye for the hook to run through it........ right now I'm thinking just one ( 1/0) hook because it looks like a tail hook would tangle pretty easily. My next thought is what kind of lip to use?.... ..................... a rounded one......... .....or a square one................. Bigger? Smaller? Longer? lure measures 3-1/4" with the square lip and about 3-1/2" with the round one. Any input is appreciated. Carve on, daymon -
Any of you who have been following my "StoneCoal Tackle busy winter" post in the Docks knows that I haven't made a lure yet this year! Well that's about to change (I hope) because last night while working on some work related stuff in my shop I spotted a splintered piece of cedar board that a friend from a local builders supply gave me a couple years ago. It was covered with dust but I cut a chunk off the end of it, ran it through the scroll saw, then across the bench sander, carved on it a little with my utility knife, hit it with some sandpaper and look what I found in there........................ .......My first lure for 2008:yeah:!! If you've ever looked at the lures in my gallery pics you've no doubt noticed that I'm stuck in the past when it comes to lure making and usually make off the wall stuff based on vintage designs. So, this is not only my first lure for 2008 but it will be my first crank bait of this style. Hope I can get back to it soon and finish it up. I'll keep ya posted. Carve on, daymon

Gonna be a busy winter for "StoneCoal Tackle"

Here's a few pics of the "James Hardy" cement siding and accessories. It comes prefinished and is tough stuff with low maintenance. ....Nice woodgrain finish and wide trim.... ......Making arch trim and keystone.......... .......once the trees are all leafed out the house should blend in pretty well, LOL The house has a spacious 36' X 28' guest bedroom with bathroom upstairs with patio door leading onto a small balcony. .....in this photo we see the supports for the balcony and also the water pipes and drain for the bath protruding from the wall. The comode and lavatory for the guest bathroom will be mounted on the exterior of the house and will be accessible by climbing out the bathroom window. This is being done to discourage guests from overstaying their welcome ...............................................just kidding, the pipes run perpendicular to the floor joists and have to be slid in from the outside before the siding can go any further. Here's a shot of one of the showers........................... Here's the back side..........sure glad this thing came preplumbed! Well, that's all for now. More to come, daymon -
Gonna be a busy winter for "StoneCoal Tackle"

Hello everyone, I'm still here and we're still plugging away on the house. Although the temps have been a little on the cool side, the hills are really turning green............ Even with the cool temps it sure beats this day.................................... Got lots of stuff going on lately including stonework on the fireplaces, rough wiring, rough plumbing, soffit and facia, siding and setting tubs and showers. Here you see the "Great Room" strewn with fieldstone and not just any old fieldstone but some unusual rocks with lots of character...................... ........like this piece of swiss cheese and this big eyeball......... ....these weired color patterns........ Or how about this "dinosaur head"................... or am I the only one who sees it? Anyways, start putting them all together and they look pretty cool....... The stone with the mortised out area at the upper left corner of the firebox was from and old barn and held the tennon of a wood beam. Here it will serve as a match box, holding a handful of long stem matches. The mantel will be oak with a big flat screen tv above, the lower box to the right will hold firewood and the upper box will hold video/audio equipment. Next post, some siding pics. Later, daymon -
Hey Jamie, It couldn't have been me you met on the Buckhannon, cause I haven't been fishing yet this year . Been flat out busy for me so far this year (see my post in "The Docks"). It sounds like you might have met Nelson Brown. He makes some fine Musky lures and I believe he was the one who ended up with Odie's stuff. I unfortunately did not get interested in lure making until after Odie passed away so I missed out on his wisdom. However I do have a few of his lures and the last of his stash of poplar wood given to me by his nephew. I've never really tried to Musky fish on a serious level but maybe I'll run into you sometime when you're up this way and you can teach me. Later, daymon

Hello and welcome to TU. Daymon here and I'm a "Krylon man"! LOL. I've been making lures for about 4 or 5 years now and I've never made the jump to an airbrush. I've painted lures with just about everything you could imagine from rattle cans to water colors to nail polish and wouldn't hesitate to try anything. I do like the Krylon though because their flat white is a great primer base coat to start from and Krylon dries FAST! Here's a couple lures I've made with various paint styles. This one was painted entirely with rattle cans and nothing else. And here's a couple done with a brush and fingernail polish............ So just grab something and start painting, the possibilities are endless. Check out my TU gallery pics, everything you see there is either rattle cans or brush or a combination of the two. Have fun and post some pics of your work. daymon

Gonna be a busy winter for "StoneCoal Tackle"
StoneCoal Tackle replied to StoneCoal Tackle's topic in The Docks
Hello all, here was the scene at the job site this morning........... ....a foggy spring morning with the red buds in bloom and the leaves beginning to really pop. The sound of a waterfall in the distance and birds chirpping everywhere, pierced every few minutes by the sound of a turkey gobbling at the top of his lungs! Don't mind going to work at all on days like this:yay: Again it's been awhile since I've posted any progress but things have been hopping. Lots happening with sub contractors such as the masons working on the two fireplaces.............seen here taking their materials through a window... .....and here starting to build the firebox on the first floor fireplace....... .....and the second floor fireplace almost roughed in........ The faces of both fireplaces will be finished with field stone gathered from the local area. The electricians have been busy too with rough wiring and installing can lights, so we now have lots of light to work by but the drywaller will probably cringe when he walks in and sees a couple hundred cans to cut around ..... The HVAC guys have been busy installing the air handlers and duct work and we expect the drillers to come soon and start drilling the wells for the geo-thermal heating and cooling system. This will be the first house we've built with this type heating/cooling so we're anxious to see it all come together. We've been busy with some final framing such as roughing in the stairs.. ........framing platforms for the bathtubs... .....adding a more elaborate porch roof than originally planned....... ...and we finally have some windows, 57 of them in fact along with 13 skylights, 2 sun tubes and 3 eight foot sliding patio doors! Quite a bit of glass in this one huh! And some of it's kinda high.......................... Hope everyone is still enjoying this thread. I still haven't built a lure this year and I've yet to go fishing either so this is all I have to contribute right now. I'll try to throw a few more pics up for ya soon. Hook a big'un for me, daymon -

I gotta give it to the "Big Block" powered coupe:yeah: but that dude on the bicycle was awesome! First time I ever saw a bicycle smoke a tire:eek:. I would love to have been driving that big yellow bus, I'd have simply driven over the idiot in the Beemer:D Smoke'm if ya got'm but act like you've got some sense! Here's my daughter a few years back, making a little smoke at a county fair "burnout" contest. She took home the womens division trophy:yeah:

Gonna be a busy winter for "StoneCoal Tackle"

It's been awhile but I'm still here, been working long days and I've been out of town for the past three weekends straight so I've not had much time to post. The house is coming along pretty good and is mostly under shingles now. Here's a few pics of our recent progress. Here the rafter tails are being trimmed....... .....skylight hole being framed ...building overhangs Sunny day, lunch on the roof (it was muddy everywhere else), and the Girl Scout cookies are here! Don't get much better than that! ..wringing every bit of light out of the day........ ...coming along, dried in with a couple of sun tunnels installed. And finally some shingles and skylights! More to come when I get some time. Hope someone is making lures and fishing! daymon
