  1. NOPE YOUR GOOD TO GO!!! You should have problems with DN over HOUSE OF DULOR
  2. The McDonalds straw trick worked.. I sold that bait on ebay for 25 bucks! The Rookie
  3. My questions is if your using a real fish to mold the bait.. are you going to have a real artist paint it?
  4. Say your were going to paint a simple TN SHAD pattern and you wanted more Depth.. 1. Paint bait all white 2. Paint Black on top only the over spary will hit the sides.. and splatter... all over the sides.. 3..Take that white again and spary your sides. to clean up the over spary. 4. Take Pearl white and spary all over the bait.. that will turn the top black to silver.. and fade your white to silver 5. Take the black again and paint the top black again 6. take the white and light spary the over spary again on the sides 7. take the pearl white and spary the bait again 8. now your ready for scales or stupid looking screen mess everyone uses.. EVEN ME!! PERSONAL!!! I THINK MESH LOOKS LIKE CRAP whoever started it should be SHOOT!!! SCALES LOOK NOTHING LIKE MESH!! THE SCALES ALL OF US USE ARE MESH!!! NOT SCALES!!! sorry... I had to VENT!!! where was I... ok lay your mesh over the sides and spary your gold on the upper half of the sides.. 9. then spary black back on top again.. the more times you repeat the steps.. the more you will GET THE DEPTH YOUR LOOKING FOR!! I have some simple shad patterns where I have about 15 steps. All the coats are LIGHT!!! TIP NUMBER 2... TURN UP YOUR PSI TO ABOUT 40 to 60!!! YOU WILL PAINT BETTER!!!! All the custom guys I know and that I have talked to that paint like nobody's business shot paint at a high PSI RATE!!! Lower psi might work for some.. but with water base paint like most use on TU.. you need to shoot that crap HIGH to get it out of your gun.. if you thin it then you really have to layer it over and over again. However, their are other paints you can try out that work alot better at lower rates... but the smell will KILL YOU!! I tried HOUSE OF KOLOR that everyone always raves about!!! HATE THE STUFF!!! SMELLS TOO BAD FOR ME TO USE!!! I hope JT is reading this.. I know he uses different paint than I.. and I always wondered what PSI rate he shot at... my guess is less than me because lacquer shoot flow better.. but Dean always told me he thought water base paint layered better to create the depth your looking for. Later dude good luck!
  5. I clear coat the lure first than install the lip. Heat up your epoxy. that will make it thinner.. then lit it drip into the lip slot of the bait. Plus after you heat the epoxy.. it will harden up faster. later... if you get some on your bait get it off before it dries.. I use kid paint brush get a clean brush to brush off the extra epoxy that gets around the bait and lip... usually I can install 2 to 4 baits in one mix of 30 min devcon. now if your using devcon to clear coat with... just install the lip and use the extra epoxy that gets around the bait as your clear... actually that is the best way if you really dont want to make a mess of your bait. or you could just make a lipless bait and you never have to worry about this at all.
  6. ALUMILITES OR FEATHER LIGHT SMOOTH ON GOOGLE THOSE AND YOUR ON YOUR WAY! Good Luck
  7. WANTED TO SHOW THIS BENT LEXAN LIP I DID WITH HELP FROM PETE!!!! His olive oil trick on the stove helps bend the lexan!! Im sure boiling water works too but oil is a whole lot faster!! Thanks Pete!! YOU DA MAN!! The Rookie
  8. Twas the night before Christmas and all through the shop. The dremmel was rockin with a chip and chop! Dust with wood smoke filled the air. Sparying some paint without even a care. Stopping to admire his efforts of labor. Washing it off only to paint again later. Oh what to clear with! He says with a chatter. Should I use Devcon or Dick, does it matter? Some will yes:yes:, others say no:nuhuh:. Tater uses glisten with a whole lotta glow! Time sure flys by fast when your having lots of fun. Making some baits to out fish some old bum. Some will say why? Hey, what's the point. You can easily buy them at Wal-mart and save wear & tear on your joints. But, our passion is craftin and we all take great pride. Making a bait that might just swims on it's side. HOLY CRAP DINO! I CANT BELIEVE THAT JUST HAPPENED! GUESS I JUST INVENTED "THE SIDE SWIMMING ASSASSIN"!!! Sure I could trash it or give it away. Maybe even sell it on ebay one day! But old mr. lure has something to say. Im homemade out of love, so go on fish away! "Fish me! Oh Fish me! If you dare!" I promise to catch something, maybe even your wife's hair!" Some of us use formulas and draw out designs. Others just wing it and create on a dime. The custom lure crafter's take fishing to the extreme. They craft out of love chasing a dream. In the end we all get to the very same place! Young, Old and obsessed fishing at a very secretive place. So dont think you've failed if your design doesnt work. You might have just invented a new kind of jerk. Fishing is fun and we all know thats true! Cast away my friend and go hook old "BIG BLUE!" Merry Christmas to all from the Hogman's garage! I might not be serious but hey my wife's in charge. Merry Christmas!!! and to the rest of you IDIOTS!!!! BITE ME!!!! The Rookie

  12. I paint lures for dough. I sell them to Joe. And if the money is right I will paint your wife's toes!! Tater Hog Custom SPA!! Bring your old beat up lures! and your old beat up... I mean wife!!! COMING TO A STRIP MALL NEAR YOU!!! Where are motto is... "Were not happy till we get that fungus off your feet and paint on your Creek." The Rookie
  13. To get your lip perfect for the arch.... Trace out your lip outline with a marker onto the plastic or lexan. then cut the lexan out with your band saw or whatever you have to cut it with....cut as close to the black line as you can without cutting the black marker line..the more you cut off the less you will have to sand off later... then get your dremmel and put a sanding bit in... Now just use your dremmel to finish off the lip and sand it down to the black marker line.. takes some practice but you can make them all the same when you get the hang of it.. After that I take a polishing bit and try to shine it up a bit... Dean told me about that trick.. Good Luck The Rookie
  14. Mark.. Stencil.. I just make different sizes and different holes.. I basically drill out the holes and move my hand around while I drill them with a dremel.. I dont lay the stencil all over the bait and just spary one time.. I move it all around the bait and just use certain parts of the stencil. It still takes me a while to paint the dots.. because you have to keep the stencil cleaned off each time you move it around or you will get paint on the bait as you slide it around.. I keep a napkin or paper towel handy and wipe off the overspary.. a clean stenicl is the key.. Dont worry if your holes arent exactly round.. spots on a trout arent exactly round.. make all kinds of different shapes... you will be impressed with the look when your done! Show me a picture of yours if you try it! Good luck. The Rookie
  15. Nice work Matt! Killer detail... The Rookie

  17. Had this carved for sometime.. never really like the head... kinda looks like a dolphin fish! love the action in the tank.. 5 inches in length about 5 oz.. runs about 4 to 6 feet.. best guess.. The rookie
  18. Sorry for the let down MT!!! I havent painted much lately so no solvents effecting what little brain cells I have left, if I ever had any....When I first started painting baits I thought 8 bucks was too much to pay a guy for custom work..boy I had alot to learn!.. so times are tuff....money is tight and Truck might really need 25 dollars.. you could do alot with 25 bucks.. I could buy 11 monster engery drinks..Keep me painting for 3 days! Or 5 cans of Skoal 6.25 #1's at McDonalds just couldnt supersize it! 10 T-shirts at the Good Will Store..that paint is hard to get out in the washer! A Lady of the night in De Moines! CHECK OUT HER PICTURE! NOT BAD FOR 25 bucks dont you think!!!!! Heck now I can buy quarter tank of gas, take my below avg escort out to McDonalds, Buy both of us 1 can of skoal and 2 Monster and we will have a party in my bait shop!!! Maybe I will show her how to become a great Master of Baits!!! SEE YOU CAN DO ALOT WITH 25 bucks! The Rookie...
