Mark and bbduc, did what you suggested with the grub body. You were right it did give the lure more and better action. I replaced the first video with the new tub swim test. It also had one other benefit. I can now hear the body sections clacking against each other. Its not a hard sound like a rattle but a very distinct thud. -
Thanks Mark. Actually when I drew this shape, I got the idea for it by looking at a picture of a Sebile Magic Swimmer. I love their shape. Didn't turn out exactly like I expected but I'm happy with it. I gave this thing a tub test this morning. Its pretty violent, really shakes the rod tip. I think that is because of the bib. For laying in the hinge wires which are free formed to fit the bait. I put one side of a section on a sponge then position a hinge wire where I want it to be and using the edge of a 16 penny nail press down hard on the hinge wire and rub back and forth along the wire. this will leave a print of the wire on the pvc. I then use the dremel with a small bit to deepen the groove about half the thickness of the wire and its wraps If you make this groove to deep, you will not be able to get an impression on the other half. After doing this, I put a couple drops of super glue on the wire to hold it in place. Next place the other half of the segment on top of the first. Line up all the edges and press down firmly and you will get an impression for the other side. Again, do the same to this side with the dremel. Place it back on the first half and if you made your grooves deep enough the bait halves should fit nicely together with no gaps between them.

Finished my first four section bait this morning. It is made of 3/4 in. PVC trim board with circuit board lip. It is ballasted with 1/8 oz weight in front section only. I may have to put a very small weight on bottom of tail as it wanted to roll over on its side and float. Will see what it does when I give it a swim test. It was still slightly tacky when I took this pic so I have not cleaned the epoxy off the hinges nor have I tub tested it to see if it will swim.

Sinyo, that is very interesting. When you poured the ashes on the epoxy after putting it on wood was it the 5 min epoxy or the 30 minute epoxy? Also what did it do to the surface texture? John

Mark, I think you are right. I havn't tried that. That is a good idea. I really like the way the head on this one hammers so I am planning on making another one with the hook attached by a split ring that way I can test it with different length hooks and grubs. Hopefuly this will get the rest of it moving. I will give your suggestion a try first. John

Dieter, I use the kind that has the sheet metal over one edge. Not sure but I think it may be called a safety razor. I had some box cutter blades which are stronger and thicker and they did not cut the PVC as easily as the razor blade. John

I supppose there may be an easier and better way to do this but here is how I do it. The first thing I do after sawing out a pattern is mark a center line all the way around the bait. After shaping and sanding the bait, I take an ordinary push pin and insert it along this line about every 1/16 of an inch until I have completly encircled the bait. I then stand the bait on its belly and insert the razor blade at the nose or tail and cut along the line. The razor just pops from hole to hole and it is much easier to stay on center with these tiny holes to guide you. I think another benefit of this is that the small grooves created by this makes for a stronger bait by giviing the epoxy something more to bind to. Like Diemai, I have mixed fine sawdust from my band saw for filling holes. It becomes more of a putty and isn't nearly as sticky after doing this. So, I would not trust it anywhere I needed strength. John

Half & Half Series II I had this posted as a thread in hardbaits and it was removed. I guess that was the wrong place to put it so I will try it here. This is the second H&H lure I have made, the first one had just a belly hook and was not jointed. The first and only time I threw it, it got one really hard strike but the fish never touched the hook. Maybe this one will do better. Not sure how deep it runs but I would guess around 4 to 6 feet deep. The lure is made of 3/4 inch PVC trim board. It was painted and epoxy topcoated before being joined. Next the hinge and bib were glued in. Hooks and line tie attached then bucket tested. It took 1/8 oz of weight to make it sit level in the water. the little round brown spot at the bottom back of the front section is where the weight was inserted. The video is not very good but if you look close you can see that the head really hammers. the rear section and grub body doesnt move much but the ribbon tail flutters nicely. Order Plastic Polycarbonate Sheet in Small Quantities at OnlineMetals.com Also, you can get a 12" x 12" piece of 3/32 Lexan brand polycarbonate at home Depot. If you are looking for circuit board, http://www.mcmaster.com/#garolite-sheets/=1r38qg has it but from what I have read here in the TU posts, it is not the white colored board. Hope this helps. John

Hey dieter, glad to see that you finally got this thing posted. I have been playing with the hinge pins and havn't gotten one to flare successfully yet without deforming. So I guess I am going to have to make the jig like you did. this is a really good and very detailed tutorial. It is easy to understand. Thanks for your hard work that went into making it. John B
