  1. Nice. I like the colors. What goes on the coil? Something special? That top one looks real! John

    Wounded Bait

I like him. Poor fellow, looks like he's been bruised and beat up pretty badly.
  3. I second Mark Poulsons idea, instead of margarine tub lids, I use a paper punch to make thin discs out of aluminum flashing. You can also get the ball bearings at McMaster Carr. BB's will also work. Hope this helps. John

    Cedar Cranks

Bob, good looking bait, like the eyes too. John
  5. skeeter334, Welcome to TU. You might be just a beginner but those are excellent paint jobs. You're painting like a pro. Hope to see a lot more of your work on here as you progress. John
  6. (I've only used the twisted wire hangers and so far none have pulled out. Try sealing your baits with super glue also, makes a balsa bait hard as a rock. ) benton b is correct. It does make the balsa very hard. For safetys sake, I recommend that you do this outside or have a fan blowing across your work area. I am not sure how bad they are for you but the fumes from this stuff give me a terrible headache. I now have a paint booth to carry the fumes away when I use CA. John

    Jointed Crank

Good looking bait, like the color. Happy to see that it will get deep instead of spinning. John

    Skidzo

Nice looking bait. How deep will this thing go?
  10. Dieter, this is really a great thread. The hinge looks good in the lure too. Lots of good info here. Thanks for sharing all of this. You should make this a member submitted tutorial. John
  11. Dieter, That is a swell idea, I like the way you are attaching them to the lure also. I think that would be bullet proof. Would make for easy alignment also I think. A well thought out idea. John
  12. Not sure who suggested this but I got it on TU. It works well for filling in around the weight hole. You might try using it for a filler in your slotted baits and that is mixing sawdust with epoxy and working this into the slot. It is a lot easier to work with and not near as messy as some of the other fillers. I get the sawdust out of my band saw and mix enough to form a thick paste. John

Finally success with a swimbait. the top one is a dud. no swimming or movement other than the grub tail that I put on it. The middle one swims perfectly with a slow or fast retrieve. perfect S'ing motion in the water, Mark and all you other fellows, I finally took your advice and tapered the sides from the first joint to the nose and from the first joint to the tail. I don't think I could ask for one to swim any better. Thanks so much for the suggestions. John
  14. Hey guys, I finally finished this thing. took it to the lake yesterday and once again, I have a dud. It won't swim. It is the one at the top of the pic. I think from what I have learned in the last few weeks, it has something to do with body shape maybe. I think I will put a bib in it just to see what happens. The swimbait in the middle of the pic swims with a perfect S motion at slow or fast retrieve. It wakes the surface at a slow speed and and stays down about 3 or 4 inches at a faster retrieve. It is my first swimbait that does what it is supposed to do. It Swims:-) John Tackleunderground Home - Luremakers Photo Gallery - a couple more

    Half n' Half

Update on the half N' half, cut the old bib out and installed one made from circuit board. Took it to the lake yesterday and it did just fine it swam well. I hung it up several times without busting up the bill. I had one very hard hit on it but it didn't get the hook in its mouth. I'd like to think it was a big smallie but I guess I'll never know. I think it needs two hooks, I have an idea for getting two hooks on the half n' half. I will post a pic of it when I get er done. Thanks for all the input. John
  16. 76Gator, I use both methods. I use the hobby balsa available at Hobby Lobby I don't think it is a dense balsa. I have not had a twisted wire pull out yet. I drill out the holes for the twisted wire hanger or tow eye then put it in all the way next I put a few drops of thin CA right at the neck of the wire where it disappears into the wood, it will follow the wire all the way in and harden the wood as it glues the pin in. this stuff is so thin that it will actually penetrate from the center of the pin hole thru the grain of the balsa and glue your fingers to the wood. There is no epoxy needed on the wire or in the hole it ain't gonna pull out in my opinion. On the swimbait that I tested which you read about, the tow eye pin and the rear hook hanger that I had the bucket of weights suspended from never budged they were installed with the thin CA their length was 1 1/4 inch. If I remember right they were holding 54 lbs of weight. I still have the two halves of that swimbait. I have been meaning to see how much weight it will take to pull those twisted pins out but have not done so yet. You might take a piece of scrap Balsa and try this method and see how much pressure it takes to pull it out of the wood. There is no doubt that thru wire is stronger but I don't think any of our bass here in Tennessee is going to pull one out, not even a mean ole Smallmouth. I Hope this makes you feel a little more secure about twisted wire hangers and tow eyes. John
  17. all the above. Very interesting. John
  18. bassinjody. that think looks good. Looks like a bass to me. Wish I had it with me this morning(club turny). What did you use for the tail? How is its action? Your lures just keep looking better and better. John
  19. Very unique bait, never seen anything like that. Went to the web site, neat concept. Hope you do well with them. John

Mark, I made the tail screw. I used to make them by wrapping the wire around a drywall screw. Now I make them by using the tool that is in the tutorials section by Kelly. It does an excellent job of makinng screwlocks. and you can make them any length you want http://www.tackleunderground.com/forum/wire-baits-how/12471-making-consistent-screw-locks-rev-1-0-a.html

Thanks Bassinjody, that is the second bait I have made of that style. Like the lure at the top of the pic, the first one had a cork screw glued into its end to screw the grub onto. To get the lure Xing with it, it had to come trhu the water at a higher speed than I wanted. You can't see it in the picture but this one has a twisted wire hook hanger back there and a corkscrew attached to it which allows the lure to x a little easier. It X's at all speeds. I will try to get a better pic of it in a couple of days. John

    First Trout attempt

Thanks for the compliments. I made this as a gift for a 15 year old who hooked a big trout on a jerk bait and it got away right at the boat also lost his lure. It was his first big trout. His dad is taking him back to try for another big one. I hope he catches it on my bait. Diemai, the lip came from jann's netcraft. I shortened it about 1/4 inch. John http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/plastic...ls/312201.aspx# By the way, the pink on this lure is createx white pearl with a couple of drops of createx flourescent pink. I know somme don't agree with this but both the green and the pink were thinned with blue windex

    First Trout attempt

the color was mixed using apple barrel leaf green and adding black a few drops at a time until I got the shade of green that I was looking for. John
