  1. Greg, Not sure that this would qualify for something to paint scales with but I found this cloth in the Walmart store. It has holographic sequins glued to it. So I stretche a piece over a junk bait that wouldn't swim and this is how it turned out with a little sharpie coloring. I think the cloth itself has a scale look to it. I made the pic as large as I could without breaking the rules so I hope it has enough detail for you to see what I am talking about. It was much easier to stretch and glue than Mylar. Now, if I can just get those sequins off. John
  2. Paul, I think you have a good idea I will give that a try this week. more ideas people
  3. A good one. That is so clear and easy to follow without sound. Thanks again Diemai
  4. If you want a bigger more domed pupil, just put the paint in the mold pockets first and after it dries then use the thinned epoxy. the first two eyes in the pic above were done this way this is what it looks like on a lure. Sorry about the pic clarity I should have taken them with better lighting
  5. finished eyes from the mold. this isn't to good of a pic and doesn't show the sparkle very well but I hope you get the idea as to how they look John
  6. I make the eye by 1st. placing a few drops of D2T in the mold pockets and let it sit long enough to get thick 2nd. I either put a few drops of black paint or a steel ball in the pockets on top of the thickened D2T. I let this sit until the epoxy hardens. 3rd I mix some more D2T and thin it with denatured alcohol to the consitency of cheap pancake syrup. I finish filling the pockets with this. 4th. I sprinkle glitter on top of the thinned epoxy. It will sink down into the thinned epoxy and coat the sides of the eye. the eyes will have a concave surface on their backside after curing. I guess this is due to the evaporation of the alcohol. You can fill this with a couple drops of epoxy if you want or use as is.
  7. After curing, mold will look like this when you pop out the eyes
  8. Maybe this will help someone who wants to make their own domed eyes. I made a silicone mold by taking a shallow plastic lid and pouring Alumilite RTV into it. Next I toook some assorted sizes of craft eyes and pushed them down into the still liquid RTV and set it aside to cure.
  9. Hey Pete, those eyes look good. Your swim bait is looking good too. John

    2nd Jerk Bait

Thanks Deimia, I think and hope this one will do much better it only has 3.2 grams of weight in it and is placed at the balance point. I may have to add more weight or put a bib in it to get it down. I will post results when I get to try it out. John
  12. Mark, another question. I'm not sure that I understand what you are saying about the ratio that you use on your lures. 2/1/1/1 and 1/1/1 is this the head length to body section lengths ratio? Thanks, John

    My First Jerks (Suspending)

Finally got to lake test these, they are all duds. Zero action at all retrieve speeds. No waggle or wobble. Not much of an action when jerking them either. I think it just took to much weight to get them down and it killed the action. Oh well, it was fun and they didn't look bad. Back to the drawing board. John

    2nd Jerk Bait

To cold in garage to paint so I'm playing with glitter and epoxy. Length 4 inches. Weight almost 3/8oz (10.6grams without hooks). Balsa Wood sealed with Min-Wax wood hardner, Split and thru wired, no base coat just D2T and glitter. The only paint on this one is the kill dot and pupil the eyes are also made with D2T and glitter. John
  15. Neat idea, Does it work/chatter? John
  16. Diemai, Those are inspiring. I also heard the word Balsa. It was the only word I understood. I liked the slotted belly and the way he thru wired. Thanks John
  17. Hi Jamie, this might seem like a dumb question but, what is a grandma style crank? by the way, i like this idea. I have made a couple of balsa cranks that took so much weight to get them down that they had little or no action. Thanks John
  18. Pete, this might help visualize the size of the mesh. Probably a little large for a small crankbait but an interesting pattern anyway. John
  19. Pete, it is going to be a little warmer here for the next few days, I'll make an effort to spray a piece of scrap wood through this stuff so we can see how it looks. I too am curious.
  20. Thanks Snax, those definitions work for me. John
  21. Good question, while we're at it what defines a jerk bait from a swimbait, wakebait or a glider. I know that I have seen some beautiful baits on here called gliders but I don't know how they are fished or what actions they have. I know what a wake bait is or acts but is it still a jerkbait? John
  22. Found this mesh stretched across the top of a box of small specialty oranges in the produce department. Its a little different pattern than I have seen before also the plastic netting material between the holes is a little wider and or thicker. not sure what it will look like, the man cave is much to cold to venture into.
  23. This shows the glitter coat a little better.

    My First Jerks (Suspending)

First, coated with thinned D2T then sprinkled Gold Glitter on sides and back and Pearl glitter on the belly. let dry. next mixed another batch of D2T did not thin it. Took a small hobby brush and drew a line of D2T down the back and stripes down the sides to belly. Yuo will have to hold it up to the light to see the glue lines. Next, mixed brown and copper glitter and sprinkled it on these wet lines by tapping a small brush like Cadman does with powder paint on his jigs. When finished, tap the lure a couple of times to get the loose glitter off and put on wheel to dry. Next, a couple coats of thinned D2T to smooth everything out. The brown one weighs 19.2 grams without hooks and split rings. If memory serves me right it was right at 5/8 oz with rings and hooks. I am thinking it will cast a mile. Just hope it will get me a big smallie. John
