As I have said before, just about everything made IMHO is a copy in one way or another of someone elses idea. But as you build, you will do or try to do those little tweaks which makes it different from others and gives it your own personal action or signature look. I seriously doubt if we could make anything that is totally 100 percent different from anything else that has ever been made. So copy away, if you enjoy the hobby, I guarantee you that the Ideas will come and you will soon be making it somewhat different. Body shape, bib size, shape or placement of bib, weight/weights size and placement of. The interesting thing is, that no matter what you change it affects just about everything about the bait. It is an interesting and very fulfilling hobby. I often lay awake at night with the gears in my head turning trying to figure out how to make an idea come to life. sometimes, I am disappointed but then another idea will take its place and the process starts all over again. I am a lure junkie with not enough time on my hands. Welcome back. John

#3 3d scaled/foiled bait. As DaveG said, " As I make these baits, I will look at them and always see something that I should have done differently or could have done better. He was right. I Have already seen a couple of things that I should do differently. #1 I should have clear coated bait after placing scales on it and before painting the bait. I did not see the edges of the foil until I took the picture and blew it up on the computer. #2 I don't think I should have highlighted the edges of the scales that are in the yellow part of the belly area. Again, I did not notice that it would have looked better without this until I Looked at it closely on the computer screen. I think the next one I make will not have the scales outlined at all.

Mark, good. It was meant as a compliment. I do and have been using the trimboard for some time now, I get mine at Home Depot. It is a different brand than Azek but it works well. I have also found that if I am careful that I can turn it on the lathe like for making a spook style lure if I don't put too much pressure on the gouge (not sure that is the right name of the tool) and even less pressure as the ends are turned down. I do enjoy making lures, there is just something very satisfying about the whole process of building lures and seeing the end result of the effort. I love it !! I am really looking forward to retirement. In a few days, I will file my paper work and will be retired sometime around the middle of June 2015. Again, Thanks for sharing. John

geez guys, I was excited about this alumiUV and I got a 36 watt uv nail drying box from Sally's for christmas. I was going to order some of this stuff. Now, I don't know what to do. I wonder if the LED dryer would do the job, it is supposedly much stronger than the UV lamp tube style dryer but it costs about three times as much. Think I will wait a little longer and see if this problem gets solved. Thanks for posting. John

mark, finally got to take tis lure out for its initial swim. went to midlake section of Fort Loudon about 2 pm this afternoon fished for two hours I caught four largemouth on it and two small stripes. The bass were nothing to brag about, 14 to 15 inchers. Water temp was 49 to 51º and it was over cast with a slight breeze. It had a ver tight wiggle and I believe it was running around 6 to 8ft deep on 8lb test flourocarbon. Would have liked to have caught a big one but at least I know the bass were attracted to it. Hope you and everyone else had a good Christmas and that all of you have a safe and Happy New Year. John

Mark, I didn't mean to give the impression that you may have missed something. I have never built anything like this and it really impresses me. I have about 6 more months until retirement and am really looking forward to having the time to improve my skills in regards to building baits. I remember some of the first swim baits that you posted. I was impressed back then. But this bait just stands out from the painting of, to the smooth lines and shaping of the bait. I am sure that if and when I attempt to make such a bait as this, that I will be looking back at your instructions as a "How To Guide." I did copy and save this in a how to file for future reference. short video of flashing scales. Flashing occurs about 2 seconds after it starts, If you blink, you will miss it. http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh72/JBlaze1952/scales%20flashing.mp4

Soon as I can find the time. I am not off from work until the 20th.So, I might try to run down to the lake one afternoon and swim it from a boat ramp/dock. I made a video of it flashing in the sun as I moved and twisted it but I can't get it to load on photo bucket. It has that bright, piercing flash of light like a shad minnow does as it swims and turns on its side. I am giving up on getting the video to load, and going to bed. 3 am will be here to soon John

Up Date on the 3d scale foiled bait. The first pic, has a layer of D2T of the back side of the foil sides. It has been curing for about 35 minutes now and is getting very tacky so I am ready to attempt to place them on the sides of the bait. As you can see in the second pic, I was able to get it on the bait without damaging or flattening the scales. I used my wife's tweezers (shushhhhhh) to handle them and a dental pic to burnish the edges. Thanks DaveG for your help with this. So far, it is looking pretty good. Tomorrow afternoon, I will apply another layer of epoxy and maybe I will get it painted by the weekend. I did not make this flat sided bait, it was made by a good friend of mine. His name is Dean Helton and his baits are IMHO as good as if not better than anything out there that I have used. He has been making Balsa baits for many years. If this turns out good, I will take it and show it to him.

DaveG, Thanks again for your response. It is people like yourself that makes TU the great site that it is. I am sure that you just shortened my learning curve by many hours. Many Thanks. I took a look at your blog, very nice baits. I particularly liked the three under the heading,"The Black Edition". John

DaveG, . Your baits look really good. thanks for that.very encouraging post. That was going to be my next attempt at keeping my scales from being flattened Did you let the epoxy harden before placing it on the bait? I think that would work well on flat sides but for a round bodied bait, I am thinking maybe it should just set up just beyond the point where it will not run or drip before applying it to the side of the bait. Then it could be shaped and formed to the contour of the bait. Another question for the epoxy gurus.Does epoxy need to be exposed to the atmosphere to cure? If so, once I place it on the bait where no air can get to it, it might never harden. John
