I dipped four baits yesterday. Frankly, I was amazed at how easy it was, how fast it was, and how nicely they came out!!!

Bill, I've led bass out of thick cover with a gentle pull on an Ika, and they won't let go. That doesn't work with my home mades that don't have salt. Maybe they think the original Yamamoto bait is sushi! Hahaha

I agree. I love their irridescent violet. I do a sparkle white belly, metalic silver sides, and black back, and then overspray the shoulders with the irridescent violet. It looks really neat, especially in the water. I'm still trying to get the blue/green to work, too. I don't worry about mix and match when it comes to water based paints. I just make sure to heat set between coats and colors.

Thanks for the info. and advice. I think I'll try it once, and see how it goes. I'll probably dip right into the container, and drip back into it, too, for a little bit. Then I'll hang it over my drip dry paper towel. I think I'll just do it in my garage with the lights off. It's cloudy and overcast here right now. Once it's stopped dripping, I'll put it into the UV nail light box for 30 second intervals, like was suggested in the original solarez thread , and see how it works. The worst case scenario is I screw up...been there, done that. In fact, I'm pretty good at that now. Hahaha Nathan, Thread hijack. What does the "0 warning points" mean?

I just got my solarez hi gloss from Fedex yesterday. I'm planning on coating some baits today. I've read here that many brush it on, but has anyone had any luck dipping it? The container says it's thin enough to spray or dip, but I'm wondering how I would remove the last dried drip off the tail hook hanger if I dipped a lure and hung it to "drip dry" before I put it under the UV lights. Are there some things I should or shouldn't do if I dip? And how many coats should I plan to use?

I guess I feel the same as Brent. I build baits for fun and for the thrill of catching a fish on something I built. Everything I know about making lures I learned here on TU, from others willing to share. So, for me, it's only fair to share whatever I've learned with others in return. I'm just a hobby builder and painter. I'm certainly no artist. You guys who sell your baits have a right to protect what makes your baits unique and successful. But what ever you do choose to share is greatly appreciated.

I bought several colors years ago, but I found they work best over a dark base, and I kind of forgot about them. I'm wondering if spraying a blue/green flip flop over a black base, and then spraying a sparkle white scale pattern over that, might make the scales shimmer. Hmmmm.....

Cadman, I only "know" about Tyvek house wrap, and that knowledge is from watching it being used, and asking the lathers. The house wrap is always put on with the label side facing out. It's good advertising, but I think it may have something to do with how moisture flows out, but not it. When I use it for my filter paper, I plan to put it on so the label side is facing the powder, so the air can flow up through the wrap. I didn't even know the post office sold Tyvek envelopes. Doh!!! So I am totally clueless about the similarities or differences between the two products. Sorry.

The hole in the motor is square, too. I used the meat holders to attach my plywood "wheels" to the shaft. They have a thumb turn set screw. I drilled four holes that lined up with the tines on the meat holder, pushed them through the holes, and bent them down on the other side, tight. That let me use the thumb turn screw to adjust how far apart on the shaft the wheels are set. Be sure and balance whatever bait you turn with a similar weight on the other side. Rotisserie motors aren't strong, and an eccentric load will make the wear out quickly.

I have the FBB-38 mold, and use the 32746 hooks, 3/0 and 4/0. I had to make the hook slot a little larger to accept the 4/0, but it wasn't that difficult. I use my football jigs with hula grubs almost exclusively, the 3/0 for the 4", and the 4/0 for the 5". The hooks are very strong and don't bend out on the hookset, like the 756 hooks did.

Cutting a round dowel at an angle will give you an oval shape.

Bill, Does your bait roll at higher speeds? I've been using 1/4 oz. weighted swimbait hooks with a deeper bend/wider gap, and have had to add additional weight to them to keep them steady at higher speeds. I like your hook/weight configuration. I have a ton of 90 degree heavy jig hooks that I could use like that, but never thought of it. Doh!!!!

That's what my fantasy hobby shop bait maker would be. I'll put that on my "when I hit the lottery list", right behind my new Z20 Ranger. Hahaha

I paint in my garage, with the big door open and a box fan at the back blowing out. It's cold, but I don't have to worry about stuff sticking to my paint, even though my garage is full of sawdust and sanding dust.

Alternate Means Of Securing Tail Other Than Toothpick

We finally got some good rain here. It's been a dry winter so far, but it looks like that is changing. We need the rain. Our reservoirs have been down, and the word drought has crept back into our conversations. How has the winter been for you so far? I've been using sst ball bearings, so far, but I am thinking of trying lead, both for the additional weight, and for the softer sound they would make. I'm using them in a cross bore just behind my belly hook hangers, in PVC, so no liner needed. I do have to be careful to clean out all the drill shavings. PVC is really tough and clingy. I've been playing around with side-to-side shifting ballast to try and get my crankbaits to "hunt". So far, it's hit and miss. I get one that hunts, and then, when I paint it, it doesn't. Really touchy. But it gives me another project to do. Take care, and have a happy holiday season. Mark
