  1. The brand I use, AZEK, is carried by both Lowe's and Home Depot. Or they can order it. There are other brands. I've found the PVC trimboard is the most buoyant, even within the AZEK line. I'm pretty sure it is in other brands, too. DON"T try and use Trex! It sinks like a rock.
  2. I don't know if this will work for wooden baits, but for the PVC baits I make, and some of the clear plastic knockoffs I buy, I use fingernail polish. It's quick, strong, and lasts. The cheap stuff I buy at CVS dries in less than an hour. I can't get the fine scale patterns that I can with an airbrush and mesh, but I can get a good scale likeness with some of the clear glitter polish. You just have to be sure the first coat is completely dry before you go over it with another. I put the glitter polish onto my airbrushed baits, too, to give them extra flash.
  3. That's what I do. I use glass worm rattles for a more subtle rattle, drill a hole that just fits the rattle, and then anchor it with a drop of superglue. After that, I fill with bondo and sand to shape.
  4. Just be sure you mix the epoxy well before you add the alcohol. If not, the alcohol will bond to one part of the 2 part epoxy, and prevent it from bonding to the other part.
  5. Try using a very light coat of metalic gold. When I do it, I hold the brush at least 6" from the bait, so I get a fog coat.
  6. Also check and see if it floats. If not, you're fighting a losing battle trying to make swimbaits out of it.
  7. Man, you're a hard man! Hahaha I don't even drink much anymore. Sucks getting old(er).

    Shad Swim Bait

Nice! The color scheme looks great, like a mackerel or some other bait fish, to me.
  10. Great looking school! Congrats on the nice fish! Bill Siemantel once told me that every swimbait maker copies someone else in one way or another, so I think that, unless you're going to try and sell them, you're good.
  11. Dave, That's probably because you actually know what you're doing. I don't, so I need all the help I can get so I don't scorch my plastic. I am just a hobby pourer, for myself and some friends if they ask. Mostly I fish what I pour. I have wasted some plastic because I got it too hot. I was just learning how to avoid that when I heard about the digital thermometer, and got one. It has made my heating, and reheating, a much easier thing than before. For me, easier equals more fun.
  12. If it's cold, '50s or lower, I hide inside. I will fish cold weather, but I won't stand in an unheated garage and work in it if I don't have to. My body doesn't do cold like it used to. We actually only had two "cold" stretches this winter, each lasting less than a week. Strange weather.
  13. The digital thermometer I use is the Micro Temp, by MTPro, or vice versa. It's worked well for several years so far, but I haven't conducted a drop test on it yet. Hahaha I'm sure any of these units will hold up if you don't drop them. Solid state electronics don't like to be dropped on hard surfaces. Go figure!
  14. I've used sst cotter keys and spinnerbait wire pins for hinging small jointed baits. With those baits, I only had a hook hanger in the first section, so there was no real strain on the hinge connections. But I wasn't able to remove the cotter pins, which had their tag ends folded back to make V shapes, once I'd glued them into the holes I had drilled. I used a .072 sst screw eye for the line tie, and a swivel for the hook hanger, because it was shorter and lighter than the screw eye.
  15. I recently made three shallow runners with the same bill angle and line tie location as the RC 2.5 lures. Two of them ran to the side, slowly, when I burned them. I examined the three side by side, and discovered that the bills on the two that ran to the side were 1/16"+- longer than on the one that ran true. I sanded those two bills down so they were like the successful lure, and that "cured" the problem.
  16. Thanks again. You know, I can paint a little, and i can carve and shape a little, but I'm no artist like some of the masters here. So when my baits and paint jobs fool fish it shows me that the fish really aren't that smart, and baits don't have to be perfect to catch fish, thank goodness!
  17. I go out to the garage whenever I get a free hour, and it's not too cold. Or, if I get a bug to build something, I steal some time. Having PVC to work with makes lure building so much faster and easier.
  18. Thanks to all. I tried to get it to eat the marker buoy weights I had in the boat, but no dice. All the fish I caught that day were on stuff I made or painted. A fun day, for sure.

    DSCN1370

Two thumbs up! If I had more, it would be more. I bet the bluegill males will look at that and then ask their mates why their babies aren't as beautiful! Of course, they'll wind up sleeping on the couch, instead of their beds!
  20. Bluetickhound, I knew I liked you!!!
  21. Jerry, It worked fine for me this time, but my fish got smaller in the new version. Hahaha
  22. To me she looked postspawn, but you know how a fisherman's eyes work. Hahaha Seriously, a very big head. Since they stopped stocking trout up there two years ago, I've caught a few 7's with 10lb heads, and I'm not the only one. But at least I can rest easy, knowing the stocked trout can no longer jump over the 100' dam, struggle past the inches deep sand bars in the feeder creek leading down from the dam, and compete with the salmon and steelhead which have survived all the pesticides and agricultural runoff to come back up the season Santa Clara River to spawn. Big relief, let me tell you! I've caught several big crappie in that lake, and they had a greenish hue with golden overtones, so I used a pearl white base, peridot sides and back, and then shot a thin coat of metalic gold over the back and shoulders. I used a black sharpie to make the crappie spots, and dipped it three times in SC9000. Fun catching on a homemade lure with my own paint scheme. I don't know that either the bait or the scheme made them more successful, or it was just getting a bait in front of them at the right time, but I like to think there was a large portion of maker genius involved. Hahahahahaha!!!!!
