  1. Those are beautiful ! I really like the trout pattern, but the browns and golds are a close second !
  2. I wish i thought gulp was overated, ive only seen the saltwater version and it gets bit without even swimming the lure. In California its not legal to use on fly or lure waters only, you can use scent like Smelly gelly on a regular plastic but can't use a plastic that comes with scent on it. I wish more game wardens would enforce that law, our trophy brown trout streams in the eastern sierra are taking a beating from still fishermen using gulp sandworms.
  3. Welcome, you shure picked a tough fish to go after ! please share your designs with us. good luck !
  4. Is that a redear sunfish ? You might want to try to find a brighter version of that baitfish, or look at Cotee plastics for that shape then use a sharpee marking pen to match, good luck
  5. Welcome im in Newport bay, OC. Ca. Are you fishin poppers in the surf in CA. ?
  6. I don't know how to downrigger for crappie but, i like old garage sale parabolic fiberglass rods. Their bend works even with a cannonball, and i use braded line with no stretch to it and let the whippiness of the rod play the fish, good luck.
  7. Try WORTH, THEY WILL SEND SAMPLES, PRICES ARE GOOD EASY TO DEAL WITH. ON THE LINE CONNECTION I QUIT USING SPLITRINGS AND WENT TO A LOOP KNOT OR A CROSSLOCK SNAP. Good luckl mlet us know !!
  8. Thats a great looking old lure. i collect all vintage tackle, most of it being worn out, that ones in v. good condition. In the book Fishing tackle antiques & collectables volume one by Karl T White page 119 its listed at $1200.00 . that books values seem to be inflated quite a bit but $400.00-- may be possible. Thats way way out of my league but in december when prices seem higher you could try a reserve auction on ebay with a $ 400.00 start and get up to 6 or 8 hundred i think ! Obviously i would'nt fish it !! just casting it may chip the paint. Congradulations on on finding a lure that is literally worth its weight in gold !!! anyone wanting mud bugs, to salmon plugs, to spoons, to rods, p.m. me and ill dig them out for you. mostly in the $5.00---$30.00 range. Ive found that the old guys often really knew what and why a lure worked. Of course even then for every quality lure there were 4-5 lousey knockoffs but, some of those are more valuable than the ones that worked well. I could go on and on and if their's enough interest let me know we'll start a thread. Lastly i love the repaint and or rebuilt vintage photos in the gallery.
  9. THAT IS A GREAT PLUG, I REALLY LIKE THE RED ON TOP WITH THE PREDOMINANT PEARL/WHITE. A GUIDE IN BAJA GAVE US SOME PLASTICS WITH A SIMILAR COLOR COMBO FOR SALTWATER CALICO BASS AND WE COULD'NT BELEVE HOW MUCH BETTER THEY WORKED THAN OUR 'MATCH THE HATCH' COLORS IVE BEEN A VINTAGE PLUG COLLECTOR FOR YEARS AND SEEN THE RED WHITE PATTERN USED MORE OVER THE YEARS THAN ANYTHING ELSE. I THOUGHT IT WAS BECAUSE THE OLD SCHOOL GUYS WERE LAZY, BUT THAT MEXICO TRIP SHOWED ME HOW WRONG I WAS. THE WORKMANSHIP ON THIS ONE IS EXCELLANT. PLEASE DON'T LEAVE IT HANGING ON YOUR ROD OVER THE WATER, YOU MAY LOOSE IT AND THE ROD. PLEASE POST FISH PHOTOS WITH THIS GEM !!!!!!!!!
  10. I Made A Mistake On A Spitter/ Popper/walker One Time And Painted It Upside Down, I Finished It And When I Jerked It Underwater A Few Times Quickly It Seemed To Want To Walk The Dog A Little Underwater. I Should Continued To Research More But I Got Sidetracked On Other Designs... It Was A Case Of Too Many Lure Designs, Not Enough Time To Fish Em All Properly. They Wont Stock Trout In Castiac Lake Socal, Till Oct. But Thanks For The Photos And Im Going To Fool Around With A Similar Design. You Just Inspired Me !! I Wish We Had Big Musky Plugs Available Out West 20 Years Ago, We Would Have Better Trout Pattern Plugs Today. Thanks Again, And If I Could Learn To Download Photos I Would Send You Some Pics Of My Monstrosities That Nobody Has Bothered To Try To Copy !!!!
  11. I Forgot I Like Jiggin Spoons And Iron And Im Friends With The Maker Of Tady Iron Jigs And He Says If You Drill A Hole Or Two On The Bottom Half Of An Iron Jig You Get A Lot More Kick In The Fast Retrieve... Hope That Helps Somebody..
  12. Thanks For Helping With My Christmas List Of Reels. Im New To All The Bass Reels Besides Shimano Calcutta 700 And Abu 5000 - 6000 . I Throw Big Plugs 6-10 In. 2-6 Oz. With Very Poor Maintinence To My Reels. (i Just Got Rid Of My Semi-auto Shotguns For Cheap Pumps Cause Im Lazy) One Reel Not Mentioned That I Have A Hard Time Breaking Is (i Can't Belive Im Writing This Lol) A Quantim Iron 6/1 Levelwind Highspeed With 20 Pound And An 8 Ft. Jig Stick. It'll Cast A 4 Oz. Plug 60-75 Yards With The Wind, Wont Smash The Magnets, Screams For Oil But Wont Fail, Big Easy Wood Handle, And Their Pretty Cheap!! If Any Of You Guys Go Up In Size Try One And I Don't Think Youll Be Sorry. I Do Not Like The Bigger Saltwater Quantim Its Way Too Slow For Fast Plugs And Jigs, Also Its Double The Price Of Of The Iron. The Rep In Socal Didn't Know What He Was Talking About And I Listened To Him.
  13. That Bert Plug Has The Look Of Some Old Wood Salmon Plugs From The West Coast, We Used To Repaint Em Like A Trout And Toss Em For Big Stripers And Largemouth After Trout Plants In Socal Before A/c/ Plugs. And Smirkplugs, I Once Had A Scuba Diver Film One Underwater And Couldn't Beleve How Good The Action Was At About 10 - 20 Feet Deep. I Also Wish I Had The Time To Detail The Lead Like You Do. I Use Splitshot Then Drill Then Stuff Then Hammer Flat To Plug Surface Then Grind Or File Then Putty Then Power Sand Then Paint, Then Flexcoat, Then Fish Then Cuss, Then Burn !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. That Would Be Alota Fun To Toss Around, Great Paint, Detail, Style !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  15. Thanks Everybody, I Guess Ill Take Your Advice And Go To Lowes Or Home Depot And Buy Up To 700 Ft. P.v.c. Maybe Ill Try A Price Check From A Big Plumbing Supply Co. If I Get A Better Deal I'll Let You Guys Know ! I Think If Im Going That Route Ill Go A Step Farther And Put A Cap On 1 End Then A Screw Cap On The Other To Be Reused For Travel. One More Small Step Would Be To Put A Wire Handle In The Middle Maybe. Ive Always Hated The Expandable Accordian Type Of Rod Cases When I Fly! Any I Have To Remember If I Wanted To Keep It Simple I Wouldn't Have 200 Rods !!!!!!!!!!
  16. ALL THE SUGGESTIONS HAVE BEEN GOOD, FOR SOMETHING REALLY DIFFERENT TRY AN OLD WOOD SALMON PLUG, OR A PENNY JIG THAT CIRCLES AS IT LANDS.
  17. I Have Over 150 Rods From Vintage To Custom From Split Bamboo To Solid Glass From Flyrods To Deep Sea, I Need To Sell And Ship Them To Friends All Over Does Anyone Have A Good System Better Than Those Triangle Short Boxes Taped Together That Prioraty Mail Uses, I Also Have Lots Of Guides From Agate To Steel To Rollers If Anyone Needs One Send A Photo And Ill See If I Can Match A Replacement For You.
  18. I Have A 'fish Call Tr-vii' I Bought On Ebay Made In 1969 By Product Promotions Of Dallas Tx. I Think It Cost About 25 Bucks . Ive Never Used It, Nor Will I , But If Anybody Wants It Let Me Know. I Collect Vintage Tackle And Have All Kinds Of Junk Or Threasures Depending On How You Look At It !!!!!!!!
  19. 2 Tips... Don't Use Your Cieling To Dry Resin Coated Plugs, When The Phone Rings And You Stand Up They Hit You In The Head... That Is Not Fun... Also Try Hindley Manufacturings Screw Company's Brass Wood Eye Screws On Plugs. They Wont Rust.
  20. An Old Guy I Know Used The Grey Rubber From Window Screens On Large Hooks 2/0 -- 6/0... But You Haven't Known Pain Until You Have Run A 6/0 4x Vmc All The Way Through Two Fingers Then Pulled Them Back Out With A Pair Of Rusty Pliers... Its A Little Like Having A 15 Pound Striper Slip Out Of Your Grasp Then Hook Your Other Hand Then Flop Around Like Crazy For A While... I Think Ill Go Back To Tubing. Sometimes The Learning Curve Can Be Painful. In Santa Barbara Ca. Theres A Tatoo/ Piercing Parlor Next Door To The Tackle Shop And Ive Offered To Supply Hooks To Some Of The Folks Who Want To Look Tough. So Far No Takers, I Also Point Out The Numeriously Pierced Guys To Young Fishermen And Say ' See Kids Thats Why You Don't Run With A Tackle Box'..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  21. Hey Great Ideas Guys, Has Anybody Tried A Small Rubber Stamp And Paint ? I Buy Printed Stickers That Are Expensive And The Printer Won't Run Them For Me Anymore !!!!
  22. Then You Would Be A Slimey Slug... Just Like When You Killed That California Corbina Thats Full Of Toxins... If You Ate It Then You Really Are In Trouble !!!!!!!
  23. Sorry Izorline Gave You The Runaround. Im Not Too Interested In The Results But I Did Try To Help, For $10,000 I Should Have Been In The Line Testing Biz. Instead Of Roofing !!! My Last Try Is Get A Simple, Accurate, Scale, An Old Deep Sea Reel With A Big Strong Handle, Tightly Mount It To A Board Or Metal Rod With Hose Clamps Or Screws, Wind On Some Strong Wire With Strong Snap Or Welded Ring, Attatch The Scale To An Unmovable Object The Attatch The Hook In The Middle At The Various Points You Want To Test, Crank Down The Reel Till It Fails.. Then Waa--laa!!
  24. Ive Seen A Line / Knot Testing Machine At A Trade Show, That You Could Use For Hooks, Izorline Had It. If You Contact Them I Bet They Would Send You A Photo Or Schematic Of It. Be Very Careful So You Don't Fling A Hook At Yourself. Also For Lures You May Want To Check The Strength Of Splitrings You Use As They Usually Fail Prior To The Hook. Please Post Your Findings And Good Luck.
  25. I Use Brass Eye Screws On The Plugs I Make. Then I Use A Hook Or File To Cleanout And Smoothout The Holes ( The Brass Files Smoother And Doesnt Cut As Much,,,, I Lost Alot Of Countdown Rapalas A Few Weeks Ago Due To Their Sharp Line Ties.. I Don't Use The Splitring That Comes With The Lure That Cuts The Line Worse Than Anything !!!! What Do You Want From A $7.00 Lure ??
