Riverman - I used to rout my 2" lures like this10 years back (30 at a time) and never had a problem, saved heaps of time, I used to sell them then. You just have to make a table to hold the plank and get an appropiate size 'round over' bit, I used a 20mm one. Cedar or some sort of pine is better than balsa , but I suppose balsa would work. Pete

Sorry I did not mean kevlar thread but cloth, like fibre glass glass mat, I think they use it in carbon fibre car/bike fairings etc. Whatever they use, it is very light and can be a very fine weave. Maybe it's called carbon fibre cloth ! !. You could devcon it between the two halves of a split blank and leave the hinge part , where the joint is, bare (no resin). You could maybe even use a piece of old Nylon/Poly shirt, stand on that and try and tear it, or 'Ripstop' tent cloth, I'm really getting carried away now. pete We have to think outside the box here.

I have never built hinged baits, but have seen and used many- great action. I have wondered why they use hinges, metal etc as they would corrode and probably make all sorts of non fish noises. Usually a through wire bait is made in two halves, so why not glue a thin sheet of ‘Lexan’ (I’m a polycarbonate freak) between the two halves to make a hinge, takes a heap of bending to break it and tear strength is way beyond a fish. Or maybe even better try a sheet of Kevlar cloth, should never break, from flex or tearing- AND – no noise. Pete In this country we HAVE to think outside the box

Interesting story, stomach ulcers, there is/was a whole industry built around Bi-car soda and all those degassing products and relief. about 15 years ago a doctor in Perth (Australia of course) thought it was a virus in the stomach, so he took a dose of the virus to prove it by then giving himself a dose of antibiotic or something. Took him 10 years to convince the Therapeutic Drugs Admin, that there had been a heap of quacks at work for about 200 years. I think he got a Nobel prize for it - he deserved it, how many people do you hear of with ulcers these days compared to 15 years ago?? Pete We think outside the BOX here !!

Vodkaman: Using 'Clemmy's' definition - Concave forward = Waggle and concave back = Wiggle, thats @ 50 deg to horizontal. Liked your posts too, great practical information - please excuse my rough and ready reckoning. pete

Coincidentally I have just tried reversing a lip on a blank, and seeing what difference it made to the same blank. I remember trying this, years ago, but had forgotten the result. Obviously the lip is not flat but curved (side to side), and the action changed from a wide snake like action to a very narrow barley perceptible slow action (very Rapala CD). Just thought I would throw this in for you Hydrologists to ponder. Pete

I have some old (I think) ‘Heddon Punkinseeds’, supposed to be 50 years old and the lacquer is slightly yellowed, but nothing to panic about. I would like to see some of mine and others with epoxy in 50 years ( I will be 108 exactly) I have often wondered how they could make such beautiful lures with only varnishes and shellac to work with, maybe they are copies and not that old at all. pete

Dramone- 'Orthophtalacid-Polyesterresin', sounds interesting, keep us posted on the tests, it's amazing what is out there in the aero/space industries that we do not hear anything about until 5 years after!!Polyesters have not rated too well with a lot of other marine / water uses , so it will be interesting to see a result. pete

Thanks, Kc / Dave. If the back bearing surface was bigger, as you say Kc it should not slip, but it is only 10mm across and the front is 20mm. I like the idea of the holes though, that would make it very positive

Thanks guys, thought it was up there a week or more ago. I am looking for something to pad the ‘turntable’ to stop slipping; I was thinking a thin film of silicone - Any Ideas???? If the blank slips you may get flat spots, although, when the first edge burrs (after sanding), it tends to hold it snug most times. If you get everything right it only takes 10-15 seconds to sand one. The further you move the turntable from the disc the wider and longer the lip will be and perfectly symmetrical (well nearly). pete
