  1. Lots of flies are tied on size 12 hooks. but a size 10 is good too. As has been said a lot depends on the size of the trout too. Here in Vermont small streams a 6" brookie is a nice fish, while the bigger rivers and ponds can hold really large ones.
  2. I wouldn't be without them. I've made the frames since I started bending wire. Hagen's sells the frames with and without blades and swivels, but as far as selling IMO there are just way to many out there to make any money on them.

    Horse head jigs

Been pouring them for years and yes use crane swivels and yeah I know they've gotten really expensive but they work so much better (thankfully I stocked up years ago)!! I use german split rings from Hagen's and they're not that expensive by the 1000. Just make sure you keep them separate from your good ones!! LOL
  4. I got my wire inserts at Mustang Wire - I didn't see them and called and got a great deal
  5. Here's pictures from the old Ament catalougs - first one not sure of the year but the second one is from their 1980 cat
  6. Check with Mustang Wire you'll have to call. 405-556-0112
  7. Congrats to all the winners!! Great looking baits!
  8. Well there is no such place! As I also tie flies I've built up quite a mass of materials. I get some nice skins on ebay. Check with goodwill I've found some nice old beat up fur coats for cheap - tear out the lining and you can cut them into zonker strips! or cut the fur off and use it that way. The feathers from craft stores I've never seen any good in them and folks I know who've tried the boa's the color wash's out. Enjoy the madness!!
  9. First I heard of this was from Fly Anglers On line back in 2007! Jim Hatch the guy doing them even sent me one of his pig bugs!!
  10. Wagner dual heat from Home Depot. Never had a problem with it.
  11. I use these, their surgical towel holders you can get on the bay. A member on a panfish board recommended them for breaking powder paint out of the eyes and they work great.
  12. After you cut use an old comb and brush out the fuzzy fibers at the cut, I also to this on natural furs.

  14. I made mine from instructions that Cadman sent me. A buddy on another board sent me some filter material but I haven't been able to match it at McMaster Car to buy more.
  15. I've always added clear to all my colors but I also use a lot of automotive powders. I do all my base coats with the fluid bed and then brush tap my other colors over the top.

    Mustang Wire

Did Mustang Wire go out of business? Their website isn't coming up.
  17. Flatten one of the blades, make your pattern and trim them and they should fit right on the blade
  18. It's listed at Zeiners https://www.zeiners.com/doit/teardropjig.html
  19. I've tried the Jacquards and Pylam but unless you're doing a lot they're too expensive. I use Fly Dye from Lureparts on line and a little goes a long way! https://www.lurepartsonline.com/Anglers-Fly-Dyes
  20. I've powder painted small blades and haven't had any problems with them.
  21. It's a cheap bobber stop- You may have to squeeze the eye on the swivel a bit but after you put it on carefully thread the bobber stop on. OR use small heat shrink tubing, put it over the eyelet of the swivel shrink it and then slowly slide it on the hook. Either way is fine but have extra set up if you need to change your plastic.
  22. Everyone I've ever seen the colors bleed out. I use mallard, teal, gadwall flank feathers either plain or ones that I've dyed myself. I use craft fur or arctic fox or other fox tails for the float and flies. But most furs can be used for float and flys
  23. I've never had that problem and I hate sooted molds if I find one on ebay! Are you using a different hook than the mold calls for?? That could make it stick if there's a rough edge, or it wasn't seated right.
  24. That's what I've gotten from old lead pipe. It's good lead but it takes a lot to clean it. I know a bunch of people who order from Chuck and Deb and no problems. Just realize shipping anything right now takes forever!! Welcome aboard!
