Sorry about the late reply - I had been using Veniards Fly dye but the shops I ordered it from only do 2 orders per year and sometimes don't always have it in stock Lately I've been getting the dye that Anglers Workhop sells called FLY Dye http://www.anglersworkshop.com/Water-Fowl-Feathers/Anglers-Fly-Dyes

You can try it - I've learned a lot about mixing so if you do make sure to write down everything you do. I don't worry about how much clear I use as I buy it by the pound. Start out with a tablespoon of your color and a 2 table spoons of clear. Dip a head and see if it's what you want. If it's not try more clear but mark down every time and the amount you add. If you dont' want to try that contact Columbia and see how much they'd charge to make it for you - doesn't hurt to ask. There is a lot of stuff not on their site.

If you're using a toaster oven go to Wally World, Target whereever you can get an In-Oven thermometer, put it in and set your temp and see if it's coming up the same temp.

I can pour jigs with the best of them having done it for 43 years, but who taught you everything you know?? BUT!!!! I also know this! Without the sharing of knowledge on this site I never would have leared how to do powder tapping, glitter coats or making a fluid bed, And I've passed that knowledge on to others. I've also taught people how to tie flies and jigs. I sent a friend who does plastics three paint jobs I did and he made plastics to match them None of us know it all!

They're basically fly line eyelets, you can find them in any fly catalouge BUT!! the problem you'll find there is the eyelet isn't going to be as big as a large hook eyelet. You could write or email to one of the companies and see if they have bigger ones.

A buddy on another board suggested these and I got a 6 pack of them cheaper than I could find a single pair. BACKHAUS TOWEL CLAMPS 3.5" SURGICAL VETERINARY http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-Pcs-Backaus-Towel-Clamp-Forceps-5-5-Surgical-Dental-Instruments-/121970788697?hash=item1c66068959

Nice free is always good - what solution are you talking about putting them in??
-
Been making them since the late 70's and still do - I'll try any type of blade and I've gotten some nice old blades on ebay. I too have found a glass bead really helps on them. I use the old Netcraft wire former, but also have a handheld worth and I just got a Dubro tool that I haven't played with yet
-
I'm okay at it - I've learned a bunch from others and I'm still learning. I'll try and help that's payback for all I've learned. Fair warning!! I figured I was just going to get a bunch of colors and be happy with that - well..... it becomes a craft of it's own!! LOL

X2 with Andy - Adding clear will help keep the glitter from clumping up. If after you dip it's got a rough feel too it add some clear. As Cadman would say practice, practice, practice!!! Also - whatever you do write down what you did!! I mixed up a color when I first started and now I can't remember how to make it again.

Toad I thought that too but the hook eyelet is too far forward and not enough of a wedge.

On the really small heads if you dip them in the powder paint just right you won't get any in the eye - slows you down a little but saves you time also. Another option are these and they don't scar the eye holes at all - a buddy does 1/100th with them and no problems, heres the link on them - but get the 5 1/4" ones. http://www.ebay.com/itm/350240308826?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Here's the six pack I bought http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc214/Fatmans1/Paint%20color%20and%20mixs/100_7393.jpg And the tips http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc214/Fatmans1/Paint%20color%20and%20mixs/100_7398.jpg

If you look at some of the auctions on ebay for Doll Jigs they'res a bunch of real ones. This is the LAST original Doll fly jig i have and it's tied with Polar Bear and has a wedge head style jig head - still looking for a mold for them but it's the only one I have and don't want to take it apart. Front View Side View lead collar with ball end which helps flair what ever material you use These are ones I tied up with Polar Bear

Wire Bender - Specific Loop And Gap Sizes
Fatman replied to Wishingiwasfishing's topic in Wire Baits
Smalljaw is right on it - my nephew had one and asked me to copy it - original on left mine on the right. I like the extra space below the eyelet, There is nothing worse than building a great spinner and then try to get the short area and then find that the clevis is crushed and won't work! Plus the fish don't seem to care very much if I have a large eye or small. Apdriver - Probably because I learned to use it, and I've been using the netcraft wire former since 1978 (I was in HS) and I still have it and use it, and it shows. I've used from .024 to .035 wire on it. One thing I've never seen the Hagens or Twist Tech make is the wire coil closers The other former I have is the old Worth hand former - make the eyes right and you can get a smaller loop I bought a Dubro wire twister but haven't used it yet, it's good up to .032 - but I think it would only be good on the bottom eyelet -

I was told the chrome dyed hides are the best to use but as I didn't tan them, and some of the folks I've bought from don't know either. I am seriously thinking of learning only so I can do squirrel hides - it's almost ridiculous how much people want for soft tanned squirrel hides. A guy on ebay gave me a great deal on 5 skins - but as he told me some of them had to be broken which is rubbing the hide to soften it up - I worked hard on three of them actually ended up thinning the tough hide on those with a heavy duty veggie peeler and then working them - They're soft now!! next time I dye I'm going to try them and see If I can keep them soft. The 9 hours was probably because I wasn't sure and it was the first time I was doing a cold dye. On the feathers it's fine so I have no reason to believe it won't stay on the fur. One of my dumbest moves when I first tried dyeing was I didn't use white vinagar for setting the color!!LOL it changed up the color a bit with the darker vinagar. You will always lose some dye in the rinse process, but as you can see from the pictures they are really nicely colored. I have no idea what temp dye stays after rinsing - I don't save it - although I was told you could with the Fly Dye and Veniards, just the next time add a bit of dry dye to it. Haven't done these ones but I have done the feathers and they tie in straight or folding them over and wrapping. I know many like the Jacquards but they don't have Flourescent colors. The only color so far that I've had trouble with is Fl. Red! (truthfully I really think I ordered plain red and mismarked the space on the order form). The other hard color I've heard is Black - I read in one place take every black dye you can find and mix them together, and bucktail takes a lot of dye I'm told. It's hard to work on stuff right now with my grand daughter here, but next year I'm going to let her help so she can see it from start to finish then fishing with it. Must be doing something right with her as when we're planning for her summer visit she always asks if her fishing pole is ready!! and I love it!!! I'm the first one to admit I'm not an expert on dyeing - I give credit for everything I've learned to others who've helped me on the way and to where I'm at and I'm STILL LEARNING!!! Since the deals I've gotten excess I don't worry as much as I did before when i only had a few small pieces. Good luck guys!

I got the dye at Anglers Workshop, yes it's $7.95 a jar but I only used about 1/2 a teaspoon to a quart of water. it doesn't take much. And there's still a lot left! Wear gloves and cover the wifes counters and the floor!!! I use a tall Ball canning jar http://www.anglersworkshop.com/Water-Fowl-Feathers/Anglers-Fly-Dyes I also use Veniards fly dye, but the shop I get it at in New Hampshire only orders twice a year and you have to call to see if they have it. The color chart says they have the Fl. Hot Pink but after an email from Veniards they say it's not available to the public. The Anglers stuff IMO is just as good. This dye works great on feathers!!

Have to disagree that you can't mix powder paint! If you take your time and write things down as you mix them. I learned that the hard way, have great color and don't remember how to mix it!! Theres a whole powder mix section over at crappie.com and also jigcraft.com - and it's actually fun!!! If you look at the color junebug from Barlows and the one from allpowder, they're two totally different shades, the Barlows is a dark purple and the one from all powder is a bright purple. No matter which one you can mix some clear and then put your glitter in. I use Ultra glitter from Nicole Crafts. If you have an AC Moore craft store they have most colors in stock or other stores can order it for you. If you don't want to deal with putting glitter in - make up a batch of clear with green glitter then dip again. You could use Tulip neon green glitter or Irredescent Sage Green In this pic the bottom jig is translucent candy teal then heated and dipped in candy translucent raspberry, both colors are from Columbia coatings. This is the plain candy transparent raspberry with glitter mixed in Have fun with it and if you start mixing - order clear by the pound! you'll use a lot.
