Today I tried to foil a bait using mylar foil, instead of the duct foil or aluminum foil. Since it doesn't have the metallic bending and contour-retaining properties of either of those, I found it was MUCH more difficult to glue to the bait and smooth down. I used Elmer's spray on glue (same as I use with aluminum foil with no problems) but just couldn't get it to smooth down. It's a mess. I would like to figure it out, though, because the foil comes in several different colors from Hobby Lobby. I know a few other guys use mylar foils. Help a poor dummy out?

I just bought the 2006GF kit from airbrush city, and it's my first airbrush, so I have no basis for comparison. All I could tell you is that it works and their price is good, but "you get what you pay for" is usually true, so i would be interested to hear from someone who has used this or a similar brush and a top-end brush.

BJSmith I am working toward buying an airbrush, and had looked at both Airbrush City and Iwata. I am interested in your comparison of those two airbrushes, did you ever end up trying the second one out? Alex

Pete How did you make that double roundover bit? I looked at some shaper bits that were double roundover, but couldn't find anything in router size. Did you start with a stock bit of some sort and do some calculated mutilation?

Is it possible to cut out a large musky-bait size lure on a router table from square stock using a bearing tipped bit and a template, or even an overarm pin set-up? Or would this be too violent and either ruin the router/bit or jerk the wood away from you?

I like the idea... How much weight will those magnets hold? I make muskie lures, often out of hardwood.

Great thread, it gives the site a more personal way to get to know some of the brilliant minds! I'm Alex, from Eagle River, WI. I'm 26, have been fishing longer than I remember, mostly flyfishing for trout when I lived in Colorado when I was a kid, and now a little of everything, but I love fishing muskies. Have been tying trout flies since I was 8, and have always tinkered with poppers, gliders, jerk baits. Only recently have I started fooling with cranks, but learning quick from guys like fatfingers and others. As far as jobs go, I've done a little of everything while being in school: carpentry, farming, pesticide application, bus driver, real estate, etc... I studied for eight years to be a pastor, did it for a year, and the stress was too much, so now my graduate school education is being put to good use as I drive truck across the country I don't post much, not because I want to be selfish with knowledge, but because there are guys on here who have done all the things that I am still trying and have already learned from the mistakes. Thanks for all the great advice and all the great attitudes on this site, it is by far the most friendly forum that I have seen on the internet, and there are some GREAT minds on here.

Hazmail Where could a guy find some kevlar thread or cloth? Is that the same stuff that they sell in fly-tying shops for spinning deer hair? And do you have any idea what pound test that would be equivalent to?

Those look awesome. I had been thinking about doing something similar with fiberglass, but the Lexan looks even better. Was it pretty pricey to use that much Lexan?

Has anyone ever tried using the Bondo epoxy that is used for automotive and marine applications? Does it yellow over time? I have been using it just because I had some lying around, but I don't know any of the long term effects.

I have been using maple for musky baits (mostly just because I had some sitting around, also because I figured that there was lense chance of eye screws pulling out of a harder wood such as maple). I saw a few smaller luremaking companies that used it on some websites. Will this work okay? I know that it's more dense than pine and poplar. Will that affect the action of the lure?

I am a new guy just getting into making lures, I make all musky lures at this point. I was wondering if adding or leaving off lure eyes makes much of a difference on musky baits. I had thought for the most part that musky, with their poor eyesight, wouldn't be as finicky as to notice lure eyes or the lack of them. I would prefer to keep the costs low by not adding unnecessary components.
