  1. Well here it is, after ruining the paint on the first try, I stripped and reworked the lure. Its for a friend so don't get the wrong idea (ROLL TIDE!!) Jay

It swims like a drunk bumble bee LOL. I could've just painted a stick and stuck a screw eye in it. This bait taught me a lot of what "NOT TO DO"

This is the second crankbait I ever made. Jay
  7. Thanks yall, I"ll try to order some. The reason I asked is I've been using a krylon primer,( not lacquer) and had some trouble with my paint and clearcoat. I believe I've narrowed it down to my primer. I don't know why its hard to find around here. I try to stay out of the speciality shops (more $$) but in this case looks like I'll be paying them a visit:teef:Thanks again. Jay
  8. can you tell me the name brand? I'm having a hard time finding it down here. thanks Jay

    Primer

Can anyone reccomend a good primer that's compatible with lacquer based paints? Like Polytranspar, or Testors Pactra Jay
  10. I keep my reciepts, it's kinda depressing looking at them. But at least if I go broke, I can fish and eat. Jay
  11. Oh yeah, I get the best light out of the fiber by sanding the ends with 400 grit sandpaper and if you clearcoat over the ends, it smooths out the scratches and the fiber doesn't work as well. Jay

  13. As far as the size goes, just use the same size fiber as the size of the eyes on the bait. you might have to do a little converting, (metric to standard, or vice versa) Just as was mentioned above, you need to drill a hole through the lure. This can be a problem in plastic lures, as the ballast weight or other obstructions are between the eyes causing the lure to bust or break when you attempt to drill. (this might explain why you see mainly rapalas with these eyes) I tried the plastic, but couldn't afford to keep breaking them till I got one right. So, I decided to use them in my handmade baits. This is how I did it: 1. cut your profile from your stock. 2. Drill a hole completely through the bait where the eyes would be.(same size as whatever fiber you plan to use.)3. roughly shape your lure like you normally would. 4. slide the fiber through the eye hole to get an approximate length.5. cut the fiber to desired length ( slightly longer than you need) 6. Place the cut piece of fiber in the lure and and or grind to match the conture of the bait (I use a dremel with a small sanding drum) 7.finish sanding the bait smooth, then prime or seal. ( NOTE: You may want to seal the bait without the fiber so the eye socket gets sealed also) 8. The final painting and clear is up to you. You can leave the fiber in and mask it, or paint with the fiber out and put the fiber in afterwards. you will have to play around with the fiber to get the desired effect. This is how I did it but I'm sure there are many other ways. As soon as I make another one I will take pics as I go and try to put together a tuturial. Hope this helps a little:) Jay

The light actually flows through the fiber. You need some sort of light source to get the effect in the picture, but the fibers do transfer any kind of light through them( sunlight), just not quite as bright as the pic. jay
  15. You can do it yourself. I just posted a couple of pics in the gallery of some I've been working on.Here's a link to where I got the fiber. fiberopticproducts.com Go to fiber optic lighting, then archery & gun fiber Jay

They're fiber optic, the kind used on gun sights, only bigger. I'm not the guy selling them on Ebay, by the way, just used the idea. There is a L.E.D. light source hidden in the box to make them brighter for the pictures but if you look at the other lure, you can see that it does transfer light pretty well. Just don't be fooled, they don't glow like that without a light on them. I'll post em again when I paint em. Here's the site where I bought the fiber: Fiberopticproducts.com Look under fiber optic lighting, then archery & gun fiber:)

Oh by the way, I'm not the guy on ebay and there is a light source. Jay
  18. Here's some pics of one I just made. I used a "Helping hands" soldering station, dismantled it, drilled the main bar holder to accomodate an X-acto knife ( inthis case an Excel from Dick Blick). you can position it any way you want and the knife slides in and out easily. This way, you can use multiple knives. Just drill some holes in a piece of styrofoam or a block of wood to place the freshly painted lures with holder and you can change lures out pretty quickly. Jay

  21. Well, the first time I dipped it, but it ran the paint on a couple of my lures, (lacquer paint) so I thinned some, sprayed a thin coat over the paint, let it dry (24 hrs) and then dipped. No problems. i haven't brushed it yet, but I'm getting a little low in the jar, so I'll be trying that pretty soon. I'm still pretty new to the Dick Nite's, so don't take my word for it. Dean Mclain and a couple of others have helped me quite a bit and I'm sure they would be happy to help. I have tried a lot of clearcoats and Dick's by far is the winner for me IMHO. Just make sure you don't put any used back in the original container or let any drip back in, It will start to cure in the jar. Search a few posts and you should find whatever answers you need from people far more qualified on this subject than me. Good Luck! Jay
  22. Thank you, that's exactly what I needed to know. Thanks again. Jay
  23. I'd rate it as fair. It's durability IMHO is not that great. So, so for bass, but I wouldn't recomend it for anything with real teeth. I switched to Dick Nite's clearcoat after reading some threads an there's no way I'd go back. Devcon 2 epoxy is good also. Jay
  24. You know, copying a pic onto paint and stretching it never crossed my mind. If I pull it out to 2 1/2", the proportions should be right. Thanks Clam & Benton & Bob & everybody. My brain doesn't seem to want to cooperate with me today. Man, I feel like an idiot Thanks Yall! Jay
