  1. I also ahd a problem with paint adhersion and sanding sealers. At first it seemed to stick great but after a couple of coats of paint, or clearcoat, a day or two in the open air, the paint pulls away from the body or splits and cracks. This has happened to many lures of mine and is the culprit behind the L.S.U. lure I posted a few weeks ago.Now I just stick to the clear laquer. No problems with that. By the way, I do plenty of sanding between coats and if Fatfingers is getting through penetration in the wood with Minwax, I may just have to try sealer again, one at a time though.
  2. I too prefer the "silent baits". I fish a lot of small water and rattle traps of any kind seem to just scare the heck out of the fish. I see more fish running away from instead of running to the baits, which doesn't seem to be good when I'm trying to catch'em. ( probably sounds like a bull dozer or freight train under water, I can even hear them through my aluminum boat) and like you said, the hooks and rings make quite a bit of noise themselves, especially with the action of the "trap" style baits. I'm definately gonna try the super glue. Great idea!!! Jay
  3. I modified some rattle traps afew years ago based on an old one my friend had a huge luck streak with. The lure was old and the BB's had corroded together just like the idea with the super glue.( great idea BTW) I drilled a hole in the side and took all the BB's out (the ones in the old lure didn't move at all) filled the hole with epoxy, it worked just fine. I also stopped the big rattle in the head on a couple. i drilled a small hole beside the top BB and took a flat toothpick pushed it in beside the BB to wedge it so it wouldn't move, a little epoxy, and your done. you can change rattle combinations for various sounds or completely silence a trap this way with minimal effort and time. may not be any help, but who knows, maybe it will. Jay

    Prop-Top

    Just another pic
  8. The frame backing is thin paneling with a little spray glue then felt. I used straight pins through the hook eyes stuck into the wood. You can bend the pins once you mount the lures to get the angle you want.( hint: use needle-nose pliers to push the pins into the wood)
  9. I started with acrylic but just wasn't happy with their durability. I was reluctant about the cleanup of laquer but found that IMHO is was easier to clean than acrylic(for me, anyway)Now it's all I use. Benefits: fast drying, fairly durable, good colors( Testors Pactra, Polytranspar) Drawbacks: fumes ( Be sure to wear a respirator) and the thinner is a little more expensive than water.lol GOOD LUCK! I will be trying the Dicknite's in the future.
  10. I just finished my first attempt at foiling a lure,(thanks for the tips yall) got the dev2 on and was wondering if I needed to sand or prep it before painting. I use laquer paints.

    what am I?

I posted a previous pic of "Bright Eyes" and realized it is in my book.( I posted the wrong pic). The lure I can't seem to find anywhere is in the pic above. No markings and the rear hook and eye is missing. I am not a expert collector so this may be simple for some of you, but I just can't seem to identify this lure. I'm sure someone out there knows.

    My first post

The tiger is just a cheap vinyl sticker I got on ebay. I had to do some trimming as it was a circle to begin with. The lure was a present for a friend, (graduate from L.S.U.), ROLL TIDE! for me. I let the paint dry for a week and a half before coating. 2 days after seal coat it was almost like it tried to pop the lure out of its skin. It split on the top and if you look close at the pic, tyou can see where the paint pulled away at the bottom of the lip. I've used seal coat many times before, but this is the first time it has done this. Thanks for the compliments, much appreciated. CreekMonster

    My first post

Well, here's my first attempt at posting a pic. By the way, I managed to ruin this lure with seal coat.
  20. Same problem with the seal coat. Just finished a display lure for a friend and decided to use my seal coat (just not tough enough for my fishable lures IMHO)and it completely ruined the lure. Yes, it is painful to see all your hard work ruined by the final step. Creekmonster
  21. Thanks for for the help, I've tried almost everything and still searching for the perfect clearcoat. I know that thats virtually impossible this side of hiring my own personal chemist . Devcon works great, a little thick for my taste, when I thin it,(denatured alcohol),it tends to yellow.C & S coatings one part epoxy is easy, but it's not tough enough and inconsistant with my paint. They make a 2 part that is as thin as water and as hard as devcon but it has the same inconsistancies( yellowing on pearls, crazing certain colors and even bleeding some colors) . These are but a few I've tried, I think I'll make some furniture so I can get some use out of all the leftovers:lol: . Next is envirotex, wish me luck.
  22. Has anybody ever tried clear coating with envirotex? (nevermind)
  23. Does anyone else have a problem viewing the pictures in the tutorials? The pics won't come up, just the box with an X.
