Met Stan at the Atlanta South Eastern Jobbers Show (Fishing Tackle) back in either 69 or 70. Seemed like a nice guy. Made a bunch of spinner baits "Zoro" and the split tail trailers. Another oldie bites the dust ... Gone to the "Happy Fishing Waters" .. JSC

How do we rid U.S. waters of Asian carp and Northern Snakeheads???
JSC replied to Spike-A-Pike's topic in The Docks
Travis I really appreciate you posting the PDF ... every one who has an intrest in this should download it as it is a 251 page document .... I have read part of it and scanned the rest and know I will be going back to answer more questions. It has answered several questions I had .. Since My River heads in Alabama I see that they have no restrictions therefore some of the ponds could have had reproducing fish in them ( will check this out a little further) and from those ponds during some of the flood years where there were many dams broken have stocked the watershed with them (grass carp) .. I all ready knew from where I have seen them that they could stand a lot of salt ... I have had some guys see them in the edge of the bay and thought they were big red fish ... fact I did for a while until I got a good look at them (they spook easier than a Red fish) .... Boy after seeing this report shows me how really bad it is in some areas and it looks like the Mississippi River and water shed is hit the hardest by these other Asian Carp as well ... this report informed me as to why I had not see the jumping as this is the Silver Carp that has not been seen in this area. Again thanks a lot and if you guys get a chance download a copy and it will answer a lot of your questions ... I know there is a lot of BS that you have to wade thru to get to the heart of it but worth the effort. JSC -
KBC It was more likely for Red Fish in the shallows . They can really blow up on one .. I catch them Bass Fishing here at the mouth of the river. Can get exiciting. JSC

How do we rid U.S. waters of Asian carp and Northern Snakeheads???
JSC replied to Spike-A-Pike's topic in The Docks
I don't anything about the Snake Heads (Thank Goodness) but the Grass Carp is a real problem and so far it has not been enough of an issue (Politicaly) to get any publicity on them as they have been stocked in several lakes and ponds to keep down the vegitation. Example Deer Point Lake In Panama City, FL Area ... They stocked them there .. suppose to be Nutered (SP) .. who knows if it working .. consiquently if you have one in possesion regardless of where it was caught you are subject to a fine. Here on the Choctawhatchee I have watched them eat every little bit of vegation they can find even seen them eat whip grass .. Before the Grass Carp around the mouth of the river during a lot of hi water years the milfoil and eel grass would be abundant and rasing fish .... we went thru one of the worst floods ever several years back and the grass carp ate it all before it could get started .... The archery Fishermen would love to be able to shoot them in the tournaments they have and there is an underground market for them. Polotics as usual is keeping anything from being done ... they are still beliving that they cannot reproduce.. Go figure ... Off Of Soap Box. JSC -
Sorry about getting off of the subject .. KBC We do not have them jumping into boats & what have you. A new thread has been started on this subject. See Ya there. My Apolgies Guys .... By the way there were 3 years that I did not fish any from age 10 and that was the 3 years in England ... was a real pain to get the necessary permits & etc. I enjoyed watching Trout off of the bridge in the Village of Fairford ... We had plenty of streams around us with excellent Trout fishing but never made it .. course I was young and single and had other things that seemed to take a lot of time. Where I was stationed (Fairford RAF Station Gloustershire) was really pretty country side .... JSC

Well you guys have gotten off onto Carp ... lets turn this out a little further to the White Amur or Asian Grass Carp that has been stocked so many places to help keep the weeds down ... those dudes get up to the 60's and 70's .... Have heard of them in Golf course ponds following the grass mowers around and actualy sliding up on the bank to eat the clippings as they had cleaned the pond of weeds ... They are suppose to be "nutered" Hello .. they have gotten to some of our rivers from broken pond dams ... they can tear up bedding areas and take away natural weeds .. really bad in some places .. to further complicate things .. they are protected in places and you cannot have them in your possesion even in waters they were not stocked in. They can really put up a fight and are excellent targets for the archery fishermen but because of the protection they are left alone ... I wonder if any one out of the state of Florida has the same problem ??? JSC

Good Thread . But for those that do not respond will continue down the same road ... unfortunealy (SP). You just have to let it slide over your head and go on ... the world is full of those that only take and do not say or know how to accept "Thank You" ... sad. Have a Good Day JSC

A while back "turkeyfootcreej" offered us a sample of the coloring that he used in candle making. Attached is a pic of my first use of it. Making a translucent blue ... the small chunk is the amount I used in 8 oz. You might see a dot or 2 of dark in the worm and shrimp this was a piece or 2 of black glitter that was in the nozzle when I poured. Will let yall know of further try's with it. Looks like it is a winner for starts .... 1 buck for the pack ... mixes fast. JSC

Bruce & wannabe .. gave you some good advice. Just a little further .. I would not get one shorter than 14' .. Highest sides and width .. several Jon boat builders make a semi V and would look for one that the V extends to the transom .. speaking of transoms .. go ahead and get the deep one while you are at it ... this will get you a good platform to build on .. great in small or on big waters (big waters with caution .. depending on your skill ) Another thing that will cost a little more but more than save the difference in the long run and that is to get an all WELDED hull. ... Been there done that .. Love my Aluminum boats ... Hope this helps a little JSC

Man this is one of the most enlightening threads ... I have poured jigs off and on for over 40 years, yes I have "Fluxed" all ways with candle wax (some would burn some would not all ways with smoke) ... But there are several things that have been brought out by you guys with this store house of knowladge on metals that blows me away (Sagacious for one) .. but I never really stirred it .. would skim off as well as scrape down the sides and bottom .. really did not know what the heck was going on except I was getting the trash to the surface .. Thanx for a look into what is going on with fluxing. This is as good a thread as the one about different metals a while back. Wish I could contribute .. all I can do is soak up this Info. Thanx Again JSC

Thanx for the advice guys. I think the Safest way for me to go is to use the car wax after cleaning since I am not that good with paint (powder painting is a different story) ... This leads me to the idea that I might should clean the whole bunch of old stuff I have ... It will take more than 1 rainy day to do that. Brian I can see a couple of "Golden Oldies" in that pix. Again Thanx Guys and I hope I can help Yall some time. JSC

Man I love old lures but some of the plastic (hard baits) really "Chalk Up" bad and the 2 that I have found to be the worst are L&S Mirror Lures and Bomber Lures especially the Model A's .. gotta be the plastic they are useing as for example all of the Heddon I have from way back when are in great shape. After cleaning them what would you coat them with to preserve them ?? I am really poor at applying a finsh to anything so I need all the help I can get. I know us older guys ....................... forgot what I was going to say ?? Oh Well .. Thanx JSC

Having been in business for myself as well as a salesman for others I have worked on a commission all those many years and I think of "things" being done in a percentage way. I belive that the "Store" concept, display of products and other things of this nature have a collectable price on them and therefore you are keeping a "Free" Forum with a profit maker. Just my 2 cents worth and I really enjoy this forum. JSC

Hi Not only are the lures of value but if boxed are valuable by themselves. The 2 together and if un opened and Ex condition would be of top value. Check on some of the auction and old lure sites to find the value or anticipate what it may eventualy be .. I think it might surprize you. JSC

Sounds like you took them out of the mold to hot .. laid them straight and they staid that way. They need to cool down in the "S" shape. JSC
-
iceman35 I would put several of the ones in the best condition back and if you have the packages they came in even better ... Could be worth some money as collector items .. JSC

Since I had some of the "Old Stuff" out I thought I had better show the attached off ... I had the Craftsman card who made this (maybe he is reading this forum) at the time he was living in Destin and was tying a lot of King dusters along with a lot of Cobia Jigs. The one attached is one of his deluxe Cobia Jigs that he gave me.. A real Craftsman and I wish I had that card with his name to give him credit. He moved from Destin several years ago and I don't know where, he was a musical instrument repair man. JSC

Attached is a picture of a few Jigs sent to me by Ledhed ... he poured and "Brush Powder Painted" them in the sunshine they are something to see ... well I thought I had better finish them up with a little dressing so got out the old vise, thread and some nylon .. have not done any tying in over 30 years ... and tied them up ... I guess if my nerves could stand it after about a hundred I might could tie a decent one again ... Great for general Saltwater fishing Surf and from a boat. Smaller for Spanish and on up to the wild and wooly ones. Great job by Ledhed. JSC

Bruce ... you gotttaa be real careful or that test rack could get you airborne .. By the way Painting Buzz Blades I do the easy way with a can of Black Rust Oleum not only the blead put the head of the bait add dark skirt and just start doing a lot of fast reeling. JSC
-
Just a note ... Re melting old stuff has some problems and is more noticeable in the Micro .. Generaly cut into small pcs put only a few in at time , Heat, Stir, Heat, Stir Add some More -Stir, Heat and etc till you get what you want to work with .. and before pouring, if you need to add color, do so then and stir some more.. You can get some weird stuff using "Dead Worms" as we call them. JSC

Hi seamsea Know that The Dilly was a great bait .. appreciate the reference to the web page .. and noted the reference to Al Foss Shimmy Wiggler and had all ways thought that the Dixie Wiggeler with a buzz type blade would have done the job .. of all those older type the Weed Wing was my choice ... and of course the Sputter Fuss by Abrogast did a great job .. the only thing back in the old days they would wear you out with our slow reels and I never really fished them as I should till we got the faster reels. The REEL change really made a difference in the buzzer lures. I really put these in a different catagory than an inline as they had a "Planeing" area. I know that is splitting hairs .... Great thread JSC

Clemmy Sounds like what you are looking for is braided Leader Wire ... You can get it coated or uncoated .. got to a good saltwater shop and they will have it. Several different brands. I am not sure .. could be wrong .. but I belive that Lindys used coated braided (or Twisted) leader wire. JSC
