  1. If I know the pattern I want. I have all my colors mixed and ready before I pick up the brush. I also keep notes on the mix. I also just start painting. I love doing that. You never know what you are going to come up with. ........Oscar

I use soap scrunchs that I buy at walmart for a dollar. You can change the shape by pulling it tighter. Plus when you cut it open its 10 feet long and that will last a long time..........Oscar
  3. Mark, Thats why made another post on this stuff. Maybe I could save someone the trouble I had. I thought it might be as good as etex and for me easier to get. But it just don't hold up. When you spend the time to make the perfect lure and then it gets destroyed in one day of fishing it makes me a little unhappy:mad:............Oscar
  4. I finally got to fish the baits I did with this epoxy. I'm not at all happy with the result. If it hit anything it chipped off. Rocks totally removed it. I think hitting the water alone chipped it. Maybe I had the mix uneven I don't think I will use it again. Etex or D2T are a far better product in my opinion..........Oscar
  5. Hey Junkie, your baits look great. Welcome to the sickness:teef: At least it has affected you and your wife. As for the devcon I would try putting more coats. I myself think etex is a better coating its not as brittle and seems to bend but not break. Plus if you do alot of baits its cheaper. Thats my opinion hope It helped you........Oscar
  6. I don't do anything to it except make sure it is clean. There is no need to sand the createx before coating with epoxy. If you are repainting a factory lure then you need to sand it before you paint. Thats only to help the paint stick better. If you apply two coats of etex I would hit it with some acohol before the second coat. Hope this helps........Oscar:teef:
  7. I did use a 4" fluid bed I made myself for spinnerbaits. Now I airbrush them and coat with devcon. I think its much harder than powder paint. Also better paint options...........Oscar
  8. Hey Smitty thanks for tip I'll have to go to habor freight to buy my flux brushes. Thats a good price. Thanks...........Oscar
  9. I finally got to use this stuff on some baits. I like the look it has but I think the etex is better. I had some lumps that I never get with etex and it took 16 hours to dry tack free. It seems softer than etex also. I think for myself I will stay with the etex. I thought you guys might like to know the results of my comparison of the two..........Oscar:teef:
  10. I use plumbers flux brushs. They have bristles like a paint brush but are very inexpensive about 30 cents each. You can clean them if you want to or throw them away each time. Look for them in the plumbing section of lowes or home depot...............Oscar:wink:
  11. I went to home depot hoping maybe they sold etex. I found a product thats called Parks super glaze. Its a two part epoxy that smells just like etex. I paid $20.00 for 32 oz. of this stuff. I was wondering if anyone has used this before. The hardener is not as clear as etex but it says it drys clear. I'll try it on some baits and post the result if anyone is interested.
  12. Thanks for all the replys. I still don't know which I want to buy. I'm thinking about just biting the bullet and getting the Iwata Custom Micron cm-c TJP mentioned. But the price is making it hard to sneek past the wife. Oscar
  13. I would like to buy a good airbrush for fine details. I looked at the badger garage sale but most are sold out. Can anyone recommend a model that is reasonably priced? I can't get a super fine spray pattern out of the one i use now. It can be any brand as long as it does a good job I don't care. Thanks....Oscar

    my 1st

Great work. I think you have a natural talent for building lures. The airbrushing just takes practice.........Oscar
  15. I would start with a cheap airbrush from ebay or some other source and the createx paint. You can order it from many places on the net. I use krylon fusion flat white spray paint for my base coat. Really any flat white paint should work fine. If you are going to use factory baits you will need to rough them up with some sandpaper or course steelwool before you shoot the base coat. Hope this helps you and have fun.........Oscar
  16. I don't think it makes a lot of differance. If big splashs scare fish my boy would have never caught one. Many times I have been hit as soon as the bait hit the water...........Oscar
  17. I use createx mostly. I use apple barrel from Wal-mart some but it has to be thinned a lot. I also use paint pens for details. Have fun...............Oscar

    Bluegill

Man I love these. Best looking spinnerbait I ever saw. Great work!!! .............Oscar
  19. Does anybody in hardbaits also make spinnerbaits? I started out making them. Now I have the airbrush and createx. I was thinking of painting some spinners the same as a crankbait and sealing it with etex. Has anyone tried this? I would think the etex would be tougher than the powder paint I use now. Thanks.........Oscar
  20. No I use a fish cooker with a cast iron pot and a ladle. I have used the lee pots but, I prefer the ladle myself.
  21. Those are great looking baits. I really like the blue gill. I have tried painting that pattern. I can never get it the way I want it to look. I end up starting over totally. Good job!!!....Oscar
  22. I think I'll keep it and try to get the weedguards in. I may sell it cheap after I try it:lol:.................Oscar
  23. Thanks Bob for the info. I mixed another batch of etex this time I used a bigger stick to mix with instead of a toothpick and made sure I had it mixed well. I could tell I had not mixed it well enough when looked in the cup I used for mixing. The center was rock hard and the outer edges are still tacky. Just like the baits. I have learned a lesson about etex the hard way. Thanks to everyone for all your replys..........Oscar:)
  24. Thanks stream stalker for the reply. Did you use a normal drill bit for this? I thought maybe a dremal tool would work but a small drill bit would be quicker.................Oscar
  25. What would cause etex not to harden? The first time I used it was 12 hours until I could touch it without any tackyness. I used it again yesterday and it is still tacky after 18 hours. I have a heater in a small room to keep it 80 degrees to speed set time. Can I recoat them if doesn't harden? Thanks
