  1. 2nd cast is great.I myself love to musky fish, its about all i fish for. I been with a guy who has caught one on the first cast and to beat all he called the cast. Im a river fisherman at heart and love to fish the small rivers and creeks and I always look for ways to put a small boat in the water sometimes it takes a lot of work. So looking at your pic I couldnt help to notice the access behind you, it looks to be a good launch site.
  2. You must have caught that one at the put in or take out on the river. looks like a boat access on the bank behind you. Great fish I love fishing the new river for smallies but a musky or two is a bonus.
  3. For me, i will fish the creeks till it freezes over then move over to the river. I always liked fishing musky in january down here, if you can stand the cold. I always have trouble finding a fishing buddy that time of year, everyones begging to go when its 70 degrees but you here a lot of excuses when it gets cold. the fishing is slow but when you move a fish its a looking to eat, they dont waste any energy just following that time of year. Fishing the creeks I like throwing gliders that time of year, work them really slow and really pick apart the hole. Well I guess what im saying is you cant catch any at the house so suck it up and put your long underwear on and fish.
  4. My neighbor across the street loves to bass fish and always laughed at me for musky fishing. He always said musky fishing was like watching paint dry, the action was to slow and not enough fish in the boat for him. So yesterday I finally got him to go fishing with me and we loaded up the jon boat and headed for small river in the area. He didnt have any poles, lures or anything to use so I let him use some gear and away we went. The river was way down due to the drought and I didnt even think we were going to get in the water, the water was that low. We started to fish and we raised the first one early and you can see the excitement in his face. Long story short we were in fish all day seen fish all day and he boated his first two muskies. I told him there is only one thing more expensive than the guide fee for the day and he said what, and I told him the rod and lure rental fee LOL..Now Im looking outside waiting to see the yard sale sign everything must go on bass gear. He said im done bass fishing and I gave him a 10 pack of lures to get started and told him the next lure will cost him.The last bass fisherman that I converted now makes and sells his own musky lures and now only fishes for muskies. Im taking them one bass fisherman at a time.
  5. husky you seem to target the new guys who need advise on making baits.I been making baits for 17 years or so and I still have questions from time to time. The last forum that i used to talk at slowly became a bragging board and everyone started think as the new guy as a bother to them for asking questions on building. And that was the reason that I came here. Tu is a placewhere everyone helps everyome and thats what I love about it. Yes there are builders here whos work I think is outstanding and watch their work as they post. Not to put people on a pedestal but just enjoy their work people like rowhunter, snax, fatfingers, and jr hopkins just off the top of my head. The list is to long for me to type out everyones name whos work I watch closely. So lets not not point fingers at who should help the new guys and who shouldnt. Lets let TU do what it does best and lets everyone have some input because nobody knows everything there is to know about building.
  6. never used rtv rubber before will have to do a search on this. Dave I will try and look at the bondo idea also thanks guys. Iwas looking to make a more easier way of weighting and be more consistant with exact weighting instead of hand pouring into the bait or trying to fit a sinker that not a perfect fit.
  7. what im really wanting to do is make a weight that shaped like a dowel but has a tag that you can snip off for the run off, just like when pouring in a factory mold. You may have to cast a mold out of something, because the shape is more than just a cylinder shape so just drilling wouldnt work. I just didnt know if there was something you could make instead of having to go to a machine shop and have it custom made.
  8. What im wanting to do is pre make my own ballast weight. These are weights that will perfectly fit pre drilled holes with a relief slot for epoxy to escape from when inserting the weight. The weight I want is shaped like a dowel. My question is what material do I make the mold out of that will handle the heat from the lead.
  9. man thats a great fish.... tell him that we are all proud of him here.. I would love to see the article when published.
  10. diemai it sounds to me you need to down size your lures if the bite is that tough. Lots of time fishing pressure or heavy boat traffic cause fish to be a little more skittish and downsizing always helped( not the cure) for this problem. If the fish are holding tight to the bottom the leader rig you have should work but try a rapala or you may have to resort to rubberbaits like dragging bass sized worms or lizards. There is no shame in downsizing to bass gear if that is what they want. Find the forage first then the pike will be right there with them close by. On caverun lake you follow the shad migration and you are on fish. I like to throw the big baits but there is a time to look at what the bass fisherman are doing sometimes they are connecting with musky because of the smaller lure choice.
  11. Diemai sorry you didnt catch anything today, sometimes the fish wins been there done that.Try some different retrieves next time.Try pulling the bait three or feet of the bottom and letting it swim back to the bottom or let it hit the bottom and reel it straight back in and half way back to the boat let it sink all the way back to the bottom. Musky are notorius for following baits and the sudden death drop half way back causes a reaction strike. Glad to help you with leader designs and keep playing around with them each of them will have there day.
  12. glad to be of some help. You was talking about wind drifting cranks those cranks, I seen a television show of bill dance years ago he cleaned up on bass doing this style of fishing but he bumped the trolling motor to help the wind out. He had three or four rods sitting high in a rod holder working a stump field. I hope you have a productive weekend and post pics if your swimbait scores a nice one.
  13. Believe me diemai Ive done alot of leader modifications in musky fishing. Im trying to work on a good drop shot rig, one that I can be happy with. Ive tried several designs but Im not totally satisfied with it. something for the future try adding a small inline blade to the front of a leader, it looks like a bigger fish running minnows. I have a hole tube full of different designs, they are different situations for each. always better to be prepared than not, the fish will dictate what they want. sometimes its anything that hits the water and somrtimes you have to really work at it. Also due some research on florocarbon I didnt think I would like it but when fish are really skittish this leader works well and think it would work well in the situation that you are trying to reach
  14. florocarbon material would work well also. I started useing floro last year and in the right condition it really out shines everything else.
  15. how long are those leaders if you are planning to drag the sinker across the bottom just remember give enough leader length to let your bait swim without it dragging and crashing it into the bottom. good luck if they work try making another set with flex leader(seven strand wire) material . with a flex leader your swim bait will have better action due to the flex of the wire instead of a solid wire shaft that wont be as forgiving
  16. man I love that bait. the swim on that thing is unique.
  17. Pete I like the filing system you have but Iam a little worried about the half roll of toliet paper you have hanging off your work bench. LOL... bottom pic right hand work bench
  18. Oh I forgot to say that I love those leaders. they look almost like the ones I made. but on mine I crimped under the bottom like you did but used shrink tubbing instead of plastic tubbing.. I like the color of the tubbing it adds to it, the fish may like it as well you know something bigger chasing something smaller
  19. Diemai I had another idea for you. you said that you wanted something easy to change without retying. how about if you clip a bell sinker to the front swivel of your leader. when you you need wieght clip it on or take it off just as quick. You will have a simple and interchangable weighting for different sized lures.
  20. I would say diemai is in the lead, who here can be crowned king. I tell you whos shop I want to see, I remember in a past post about not being able to find things. Come on Rookie I want to see your shop.
