  3. Maybe I should stop stripping the baits. What is the Dick Nite top coat that you guys are using? I use a PPG Auto clear with hardener. Seems to work well but adds weight. I also use lacqure paints. Should I make a switch?
  4. Thanks. That was really helpful. I have read it and printed it off and will get started very soon. Thanks again!!!
  5. I used to paint over the existing paint but found that it effects the action. So I have started striping them and there is a world of difference.
  6. I have some of the stix chrome and have used it. Works pretty good until you spray a color over it and then add the clear. It really dules down after that.

    some new baits

That is a very nice color. I like the fine detail of the gill and dots. Very sweet!!!
  8. I would like to tie my own trebles. What is the best feather to use for this? It is for bass baits and I would like to have nice long feathers too. Thanks
  9. Guys, I have been painting baits for myself for some time now. Over the last few months some of my buddies have brought me baits to paint for them. I have been sanding the original paint off before appling the new paint. This takes forever. Is there something that I can use to strip the paint off with out effecting the plastic???

    balsa baits

Hey man those baits look good. Really like the middle and bottom right ones. I have made a few balsa baits but they don't look that good. I like the shape and color of those two baits. The bottom right is my favorite. Where do you get your bills? What size wire do you use? I used .035" wire and it was tuff to bind. I just have round nose pliers to bend with. But those look great. Also thanks for the help with my last post about the baits cracking. Take Care Net Man
  11. captsully18, Thank you for the info. I am new at this so all the input is great.
  12. I don't want to have baits turning yellow. If I use the Devcon and put one coat of clear on it, will it still turn yellow? I bought some baits from Tim Hugh's a few years and they have turned yellow and look bad. What causes Devcon to turn yellow?
  13. I tried devcon for the first time yesterday. I was using it for a sealer. I brushed it on and rotated it a needed. It is very lumpy and required lots of sanding. Should I thin it? What type of reducer o I need? What can I do to make it smooth? I would like to use it as a top coat. So what do you guys do to get the bait to look so good? What is the best brush to use? Thanks
  14. So you use this as the top coat?
  15. What is this Devcon that everyone is talking about? Devcon 2T?? I have looked for this but I am not really sure what to be looking for. I know that sounds dumb but they make sealer and epoxy and all sorts of stuff. What Devcon do you use for the final clear coat and what Devcon do you use for sealing a bait?
  16. Riverman, Let me know how they turn out. I am looking for a new clear coat to use. I am using a Automotive clear right now. It is PPG Omni. But it seems to work but it just does not have the depth to it that I want. So please keep me posted on the spar. Thanks
  17. Yes I do clear my baits but I use an Automotive Clear Coat and normally put 3 to 4 coats on each bait. After working with plastic baits too I have noticed that the clear is very tough. So I am not sure that it is the clear coat causing the problem. But I am look at the new seal coat from CS to start using. Thank you for all the help.
  18. Thank you for the imput so far. What are some other types of sealer that I could use. I have been using a vinyl sealer. I have seen where some are using an epoxy sealer too. What is best to use? Thanks
  19. All the cracks seem to be coming from the bill.
  20. When they crack you can see a hair line in the wood where the crack was. And some places the paint is not even reallt stuck to the wood that well but in other places you can't get it off.
  21. The big issue I have it that I can paint 3 Tenn. Tuffy's and 1 or 2 will crack. But not the 3rd. I don't understand this at all. I know that I am new to this but my Dad owns a cabinet shop and restores old cars. So I have been around lots of different paints over the years. He does not know what is going on either.
  22. I let the bait soak in the sealer for Aprox 30 min. Than I let it dry for 1 day and sand it. After I sand it I soak it again. Than I prime it. Once that dries I lightly sand it and prime it one more time and lightly sand again. Than I spray a base coat, put the colors on and spray the clear. I use an automotive clear and will spray 3 to 4 coats before it is finished.
  23. I have refinished some old Tenn. Tuffy's and they crack after a few cast. I strip the bait down to the wood and seal it, prime, and than paint. What is causing it to crack. I also had this happen to an old Poe bait too. Any help???
