  1. Hi , Folks , Finally got done with my "Pfeffers" , managed to take them to the pond today and gave them a test swim . It may not be clearly visible in the video , but they all do wiggle nicely and also sport the significant hunting action , ...at least in my point of view . Seemingly they did not turn out to be as buoyant as Vic's version , but still I'm pretty much satisfied with their performance . My special gratitudes go to Vic for having provided so much help and assistance , without his help I surely would not have made it that far with these lures . Hope you won't mind about the other lures displayed in that video , .....just took a chance to put them all on film , ...thanks a lot again EVERYBODY for all of your input and help in here , ......really enjoyed this little lure "joint venture" across the Great Pond , I'm truly happy with the outcome ! tight lines , Dieter
  2. @ Griffond ............too familiar to such , .......so many lures , so little time , ....fully understand about the need to set preferences . ...........but on the other hand , ...how would it be like , if we'd ever run out of ideas and inspirations for future builds ? Good luck furthermore , ...greetz , Dieter
  3. Hahaha , exactly my own motivation , ......good luck , mate , ........the pattern on top lure has been sprayed utilizing rubber-O-rings slid over the lure blank acting as some kinda masking , got some more lures painted this way on the older pages of my gallery uploads . Good luck , Dieter
  4. I must say , that I was pretty much surprised to see that spam post here at TU , ......compared to another lure site , that I do frequently visit , not many troubles with spam mails have occured in here , ...in fact I seem to remember not to have even seen a single one so far . Thanks for taking care , ....greetz , Dieter
  5. @ scrubs Hi , Bill , Just dug up some baits from my stowaway boxes down the basement , ...the smaller ones are W x H x L at 16 x 11 x 115 millimetres , the larger ones at 25 x 17 x 169 millimetres . Note the yellowing on the smaller lures of abachewood sealed by linseedoil soaking , ...so glad , that I've discovered propionate for myself now , finally thru with this mess caused by the linseed oil ! But this way one can see , where the ballast sits , ......but on the larger lures the ballast is located just behind the front hook hanger , ....but I'd strongly advise you to trim your baits in a waterbucket individually , ......if my memory serves me right , the smaller lures came out to hang nose down too much , ......at least with single strand wire leader attached , ......the larger lures do float up perfectly , just a tad nose down . Good luck , Dieter
  6. As far as I remember I did not go after plan quite accurately , since I've used readily dimensioned dowels for my medium versions , ........for the bigger versions I had to plane down thicker dowels . But I think , that I'm quite close , as the realations of height and width must match , ...if the lure body is too wide , it won't flip over to swimming position after cast and impact , ......and if the cross section would be rather squarish , the lure might not dart downward quite well due to a lack of sideward stability. It is a simple diving pullbait , ......viewed from the side it sports a kinda "sawteeth" pattern , when constantly jerked and paused . Can't remember exact measurement , I will go down the shop tommorrow afternoon and take measurements from the different versions that I have . See ya , Dieter
  7. That perch's looks came out pretty much natural , .....nice job ! Greetz , Dieter
  8. @ Griffond Yep , ...such an accidental air enclosure might be the cause as well , ....haven't thought about such at first . Might easily happen , if the weight sits too snug in it's hole and glue can't flow everywhere . Good luck , ...Dieter
  9. @ Griffond That's strange , ..maybe it has to do with the water temperature , .....have you used a wire leader on both trials , sink and outdoors alike ? If not , ...your bait should hang level with a leader attached , .....if you had a leader on , you may just use a longer or thicker one , ...but only works , if the flaw isn't that much . Never happened to me ,......mine always sink faster outdoors than determined whilst blank trimming . But great to hear , that your bait obviously swims fine and still leaves room for more tinkering , ..... Good luck , .......Dieter
  10. I even messed up in wrinkles using spray paints(both matte , both solvent-based)of two different brands sold by two different local tool mart chains , ......and this was the last straw to break the camel's back for me , ....slower , but happy with the hand brush now ! Cheers , Dieter
  11. @ RayburnGuy I 100% agree , Ben , ...you're dead on with your statements , ....if I look closely I get to the point , that regarding the making of glide baits there are almost as many dynamics to take into consideration as there would be when planning for certain swimming or diving patterns of lipped diving baits . But one little thing for the tinkerer's comfort , ......even if a bait does not come out to perform the perfect glide 2 1/2 feet and 90° offset from the straight course , but rather does just a little Xing on the spot , they are all capable to catch fish , ...some baits more and some just less ! Greetz , Dieter
  12. @ Griffond Looks great , ....would have plenty of flash due to the silvery flanks , ...looking forward to the diplay video , .... ..........good luck , Dieter
  13. Ben , ........this exactly seems to count for the "Heiddy" glidebait , that I had described in my post #11 above , .......only ONE weight at the center of gravity to let the lure hang level , ...the gliding and darting action is powerded by the accelerated weight , but guided by the high body portion AHEAD of the ballast , acting like some kinda unstable rudder in the water . But I am really wondering , how a lower profiled and nose pointy bait(thus not providing much of such "rudder" function) with just ONE levelling weight would act , .........I assume , that it would just dart forward more or less , with only moderate sideward moves . Wish I had the time for a comparison build , ......two slender , about willowleaf shaped flat-bodied baits , of which one with ballast FORE and AFT and the other with just ONE ballast location , ....both lures with same sink rate and both sinking at horizontal Level . Maybe some day I would , ...but too many other lure building tasks ahead right now ! @ littleriver Vic , in search of some different footage I've just found this video showing a "Manta" glide bait assumingly being worked aside of a moving boat . Due to general forward motion of the boat the glide path is very narrow(you should see it's exeptional gliding performance when worked from a fixed point) , but this video nicely displays the function of a tailfin , that you had questioned before . If you look closely , you will see , that when the lure darts sideward , the lurebody also has a tendency to roll into the direction of the line pull to waste a part of the jerk's energy into body roll instead of forward motion . But right at this moment , the tail fin hangs at an angle , both to the straight course of line pull but also to the horizontal level of the bait , ...the tail fin engages into the oncoming current and levels the lure again , so that the remaining momentum of the jerk can be changed into a pure sideward movement making up for the glide path of the bait . Without a tail fin , the lure would take longer to level out just by it's belly ballast , thus more jerk momentum is wasted and can't be used for a forward glide anymore , resulting in a generally narrower glidepath anf possibly also a lower max. gliding angle off the straight course of line pull . OK , ...finally I've still found a vid displaying the "Manta's" action worked from a fixed point : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNkuSJwu0dg Cheers, Dieter
  14. ............best wishes from me , too , please ! Cheers , Dieter
  15. No other than this one , .....but with a bit of measuring on an enlarged printout and a bit of proportional calculation to get to the desired length or width you should get along quite well . http://www.lurebuilding.nl/indexeng.html Check "Jerkbaits" , then "Divers" and finally go to " 10 Inch Megadiver" .......BTW , ......the "Musky Jerk Bait Pattern 2" published in this PDF file is similar to the action of a "Suick" , but is yet easier to build , as it does not require a tailfin to dive down . http://www.luremaking.com/catalogue/download/crankbaitcarvingpatterns.pdf I have never tried the low tow eye position as indicated , ...I'm placing the line tie right in center of the slant diving plane and add a bit of hammered flat belly weight about 1/3 to 2/5 of length from the nose's edge , ......just to decrease buoyancy , thus increase hangtime and to have the lure dart deeper and steeper downward . The bait should hang just SLIGHTLY head down at rest , ...not more than 5° , I'd say , .......but if hanging dead on level won't be a big deal , either , ...maybe just a few inches less of depth ? Even my smaller 5" versions can be jerked down to about 3 feet , ...but all depends on remaining buoyancy , ......bigger lures would naturally dig deeper , .......5 or 6 feet would be the limit , I reckon . Even added a prop or a tail spinner to some , ......caught a couple of average pike on these lures before . http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/index.php?/gallery/image/2675-very-simple-pullbaits-but-yet-effective/ http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/index.php?/gallery/image/2674-very-simple-pullbaits-but-yet-effective/ Greetz , Dieter
  16. .................been there , ....done that , ...........an entire dozen of new lures had to be sanded "nude" again and repainted ! Happened several years ago , ......since I haven't touched the rattlecans again ! @ Seeking 56 .............they've really chewed on this one , .......great lure ! Cheers , Dieter
  17. @ littleriver Vic , ...such rear fins do add sideward stability and guidance to a glidebait in the water , in particular to such round-bodied ones . Naturally a round-bodied bait has a tendency to roll , so a certain share of the energy of the single rod jerk is causing the lure to roll , not generating the desired forward push , which finally results into the sideward glide . The fins do counterwork a rolling motion , so more of the jerk's momentum is changed into the desired forward glide . Dunno , whether as a boy you had built simple bow and arrows , ...I did , .....and I remember when shooting simple plain hazelnut rods as arrows , these would get to tumble on flight and also fly somewhat unpredictably , ........adding a feather fletching to them really improved their accuracy and general performance on flight , also let them fly further , .........so , ..in a nutshell , .......these rear fins on my glidebait cause a similar result to the lure . If you would do an about same shaped and balanced lure WITHOUT fins , it would certainly not glide as pronounced and not dart as far , also it's gliding directions would become more random . Regarding those flat and high profiled drop belly gliders , .......these would not require any fins , ...better said , they would be rather useless , as such lure's body height and the lower belly ballast do already let the lure sit upright and quite stable , counterworking a greater tendency to roll(roll resulting into a waste of forward momentum) . @ Griffond Off course this would work , ......at least it would be easier to work down , ....but one's gotta make compromises in terms of stability(if the lureblank gets very thin at that portion) , ........and you'd still need some "flesh" for holding the screweyes and also for ballast holes . I've made the fins in this elaborate way , also to gain a bit more of buoyancy in the rear part of the lure , so that I can place a bit more of ballast there , as more rear ballast imparts more momentum ,.......by placing a polycarbonate or metal fin there , I would even have lost buoancy . @ mark poulson Mark , off course you are dead on , ....the longer the lurebody , the more guidance in the water , thus a longer glide compared to a shorter lure ! @ Gon2long It is of advantage to seal ANY timber lure prior to exposing it to water , even if it would only be for a little while . In every case the woodgrains would rise up more or less and you'd have to sand it all over again , ....eventually assembled lips or hookhangers just do not make this task easier . Even more important is , that if the water exposure might get to take a little longer , the wood soaks up water and your results about determining ballast location and amount would become increasingly inaccurate , ....also you would have to spend a longer period of time to dry the blank thoroughly , before finally glueing in the ballast and proceed with painting . When trimming a glidebait or a topwater "walk-the-dog" bait , you should pre-assemble all hardware and hooks , also attach the neccessary wire leader(or at least a piece of wire as a substitute) , just to get as accurate as possible with sink rate and/or swim level , ........but remember , that the finished lure would always get to sink a tad faster than determined , just because you'd drill out some buoyant material for the ballast holes and also paint and topcoat do add a little weight . Thanks a lot for your interest , folks , .......greetz , Dieter
  18. Here is one that I had made last winter , fished it thoroughly for the first time this morning and afternoon , .....looks like a good design , ......apart from the two fish(well , at least one could be called a fish )shown , another average pike had a go on the lure , .....but surely was reluctant , just bumped the bait with the nose , could clearly see at 2 feet of depth , also felt it . The sideward glide of this bait looks pretty fine to me , ....though sadly I was unable to capture it's full potential on video , I guess , ...also utilizing a better suited , more stiffish rod might still improve it's action . Greetz , Dieter
  19. But what actually is the right and sure fire action of a well catching glidebait , .........I guess , that only the fish could tell ? greetz , Dieter
  20. Jep , ...exactly , ..........I do not have any scales as well , ........just doing the trimming by trial and error , until I'd be satisfied with the action of the lure . Good luck , ...Dieter

    nail polish testing

Looking pretty much like the real thing , ...surely it would get nailed !
  22. @ scrubs Thanks for sharing , ......some very nice work to be seen there , ....another proof for what Vic had mentioned above , ......every handbrush painter leaves his own signature on the lure , hardly two guys do have the same pass of the brush , ..not to talk of using different types of paint and/or employing different painting techniques . Greetz , Dieter
  23. @ Griffond I would try the ballast amount and location before finally drilling the ballast hole to glue the weight in , ....I do this by taping it onto the preassembled and sealed bait , also connect a leader or a piece of wire as a substitute to achive accurate , horizontal sink level . Looks promising , ...cheers , Dieter
  24. Always have my problems with things changing , .......it's always this certain grade of uncertainity , that bothers me , I guess . But often changes do turn out for good and within the blink of an eye I may forget about how things were before . I truly hope , that this is gonna be the case with TU as well . So well , ......Jerry , thank you so much for your relentless work for this great site , which has become some kinda institution to me (and surely to a bunch of other folks as well) through the past years , ........I'm wishing you all the best , now that you are stepping back from tasks and responsibilities . THANK YOU SO MUCH Curt , ......I've been a member in here for a couple of years now , became so much convinced about this site , that I have signed sponsorship , even though I'm so far away . I have made so many friends in here , leading great and fruitful conversations and discussion about the passion , that we are all into . It would be your committment to lead TU into a positive future , keeping all of these good things , that make TU the TackleUnderground , possibly also developping them for good even more ! Welcome aboard , Curt Cheers from northern Germany , Dieter
