    Some New Lures of Mine

Local weather's going up and down , some two weeks ago we've had some inches of snow and all stillwaters iced up , up to -10 C during frosty nights , ....approaching Xmas all melted away again , down Munich they had unbelievable 20,1° C last weekend ! ! ! Around 22nd and 23rd we've had some more snow , but won't last , right now it's stormy and rainy around 7° C , for Friday and Saturday friendly weather is forecast , but with slight frost again . Really weird weather , blaming it on global warming , during my younger years it used to be much more consistent . For your hunting baits , ..have you considered about a little blade on the tail end of the lurebody ? Somewhere I have seen a video of a Japanese lure like this , the heavier blade is not swivelled , just attached to an eye at the rear , ....it would hang and flutter to one side letting the lure break out to this side , ......if the line pull would get to strong dragging the bait back on course or the blade accidentally swings over vice versa , the bait would change direction and swim to the other side , ...all in all providing some kinda "drunken" course to the bait . Meantime an ordinary lip would let it wiggle all of the time . Guess , I'm gonna do some final casts tommorrow , before season ends December 31st . The missus intends to stroll the shopping malls in Hamburg city , so I'm gonna take rod , lurebag and net along to go down the "Alster" lake there and see , if I could still stir something up in the cold water , .......all the best and Happy New Year , ...cheers , Dieter

    Some New Lures of Mine

Thanks a lot , Mark , ....hope you're having an enjoyable holiday as well , ..at least you should have better weather over there , LOL . Your concerns about deforming lead weights get me thinking as well , ......there are one or two lures amongst this bunch where the weights do bind a bit AFTER final assembly(they did not in a dry fit , otherwise I would have reworked the fit) . I'm just busy topcoating two more large "Weightshifters" of abachewood , one of these has these issues as well . But possibly deforming lead is only one option ,..... could happen as well , that the belly hookhanger mounting screws could accidentally get too close to the internal straw liner inside of the center bore , thus maybe bulging up the wood to somewhat tighten that liner , making it a bit too narrow for the balls to pass properly ? Also that internal straw liner often comes to sit more or less curved , as I'm drilling from either side to meet in center , not always 100% accurate , ......... as a result the liner tightens as well somewhere in the bend . And the balls are stated 7mm dia. sliding in a 8mm outer dia. straw liner , so not much room left ! Never had these issues with the smaller .22cal (5,5mm)airgun pellets sliding in that 8mm outer dia. straw , simply because there is much more room left to even out little imperfections . But obviously these smaller balls do not provide as much sliding ballast , thus are not as effective compared to bigger lead balls(would be great to have some in 6,5mm dia. , but not available) . The "PN-Kid" and the rainbow trout colored lure have a 6mm outer dia. straw liner holding a couple of just 5,1mm dia. balls , ...looks like with this set-up the odds are a lot better in terms of the weights binding , ..all stands and falls with a bigger tolerance between ball dia. and liner size . I'm also not so sure , whether the balls might deform a bit after a while of use(would be able to tell more by the end of next years season) , ...but if the liner's dia. is big enough , it won't matter to a proper function , I guess , ...this is the point ! If you're using splitshot , you would need a bigger liner , too , as it is not much of an entirely spheric shape and also it might even deform easier due to it's deep slot . But two or three years ago I have also used cylindrical curtain weights of about 10 X 5mm dia , ......even inside of a PVC lurebody WITHOUT any liner inside of the center bore these do properly slide into the lures nose , when the retrieve ist started , ....so they overcome the friction with ease . I've used these lures quite a bit since , ..the bore dia . was 6mm , if my memory serves me right , ....no binding of the weights has occured so far . Greetz , Dieter

    Some New Lures of Mine

Hi , folks , Been a while since I've uploaded something in here , .......just completed 10 new lures , but I'm just uploading one picture to save space and typing work , ...all other pictures containing in the attached bathtub display video . Further explanations also given in that video , ...all lures are brush painted with modellmaking enamels . Cheers , diemai
  4. @ Quink Welcome to TU , great to have you here ! Very nice lures you've made there , ....the ones on pic 2 and 3 , ..are they weighted to sink ? Just asking , as I've made somewhat similar designs in the past . Be prepared to possibly have your piccies deleted in here , as accordingly to the site rules finished lures should be posted in the gallery only , not here in the different bait topics , ......whereas lures still under construction can be posted in here to display and/or explain certain working processes or design features , also when asking for advice concerning certain problems about such lures , both in terms of shaping and painting . Just a bit of explanation , .....enjoy yourself in here , ...Merry Xmas , ...Cheers , diemai
  5. @ shade_skyhi I also make my timber lures in way so that the belly screw eyes would run about crosswise through the grain , ......front and rear eye shanks running under a little angle up,-or downward , if possible , ....not parallel to the lure's lengthwise center axis , ...also adds a certain amount of stability against pull-out , ...also belly eyes pointing a bit rearward are more stable against pull-out . Also front and rear eyes running upward do provide more space for belly weights fore and aft , particulary important for sinking glidebaits sometimes . I do extend the pilot holes at the entry to at least twice the shaft dia. , ...just a few millimetres deep , .....when I finally twist in the eyes with a drop of epoxy glue applied , a little "glue-plug" evolves in this bore extensions , also adding stability . Good luck , diemai
  6. By the way , folks , ......here is another very interesting and truly inspiring luremaking website from Italy , this is a version translated by the Google translator , so please don't bother about the somewhat halting and improper translation , lots of pictured instructions there for better understanding . http://translate.google.it/translate?hl=it&sl=it&tl=en&u=http://xoomer.virgilio.it/cjbur/1indice_tema.htm The link was kindly posted by an Italian user of another website and I was given permission to continue linking it . Have lots of fun browsing through ! greetz , Dieter
  7. Thanks , Ben , .......always glad if I could contribute a bit , ...also thanks to the other folks for their "thumb ups" , ...have yourself a Merry Xmas , fellas ! Cheers , Dieter
  8. Hi , folks , I've been into a google search for lure sites last night and discovered this site , ......looking pretty much interesting to me . I have only browsed the "lure" topics so far , but the describtions and reviews in there are a very good read in my opinion , .......gotta go deeper into it through the Xmas vacation ! Just thought I might share in here . http://www.bradwiegmann.com/ Cheers , diemai
  9. Frohe Weihnachten , everybody ! Cheers , diemai
  10. @ Member Ben's suggestion really is the cheapest way to go , ....but would not match my own situation . Doing just like you , I'm carving , turning painting and topcoating my lures in just one room , ..but I simply lack the space for such a rack covered up with a cardboard box , .........I'd rather spend some money buying a few bigger stowaway plastic boxes sporting changeable dividers in a tool mart , ......sometimes these are on special sales(using such boxes for lure storage in general , anyway) ,....... they usually come quite a bit cheaper than special lures boxes from the tackle shop , ...at least over here in Germany . These boxes I can slide into any vacant corners or gaps available , place them into cupboards or into my wall racks , etc ....! So far I haven't yet proceeded the way you intend to do , ....just having dozens of readily shaped blanks around and dumped into some shoe cardboard boxes ,....... but once I'd start the finishing , I'd take it to an end before making woodchips and dust again . If you'd go that track , make sure that you'd use different boxes for sheer blanks and primed or halfway painted blanks each , as the pure timber ones would have some dust still sticking to them , which would surely settle inside of the box and later stick to halfway painted lures as well , if they should be placed into that very box either . Just my two cents , ...good luck , ...cheers , diemai
  11. I'm always getting in here by clicking the links in my notification Emails , .......after reading the new post(s) in my subscribed threads I'd jump to forums section at will , .......no such problems ever occured ! But also when just adressing www.tackleunderground.com I also get on the start page . Greetz , Dieter
  12. Yes , off course , Mark.......but the pond owner might see it a little different way and obviously does not have any problems about banning for whatsoever reasons !
  13. They certainly do , Mark , ......but they're not catchable with timber lures , I guess , .....at least it's very hard to determine about the right moment for a hookset ! Greetz , Dieter
  14. But you would need to disassemble the hooks before , ......was thinking about an "inline" bait to be rigged straight onto the line , anyway , ......maybe similar to a salmon trolling plug . cheers , Dieter
  15. Great design and nice video , Dave , thumbs up ! Haha , ....love your list-up of the banning reasons , similar happened to me at a local "put-and-take" trout pond years ago , ...the owner obviously did not know the differences between baits and lures , when I had asked him about the regulations . But I guess , that you're right with your assumed cause about the big and bald European guy , .....I bet it's a new challenge for you now to fulfill the newly given conditions lurewise , ......maybe somekinda lure of meat,-or fish-flavored and hard-baked boilie dough in a crankbait shape , ..at least lasting for an hour or two to retain it's lure shape in the water ! Thanks for sharing , ...cheers , Dieter

    Hard Bait

............you might as well place a matching bore into the tail end to accomodate your grub's tail , a small crosswise bore lined with some plastic , -or metal tubing accommodates a small wire pin or a toothpick . More time-consuming and eloborate to build , but in my opinion makes up for a more reliable and sturdy than the corkscrew described by Ben above . http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/index.php?/gallery/image/3515-pike-size-robo-mouse/ (also check following picture) By all means you'd need a proper topcoat on your lure , preferable epoxy , if you don't want to discover a sticky mess in your tacklebox after some time of storing your lure in there . Good luck , diemai PS : Welcome to the TackleUnderground , ...hope , you'd enjoy yourself in here !
  17. Thanks a lot folks , ..glad you like my vids , .......next trout catching's still so far away , ponds have just iced up and no lurefishing over here as from January 1st until May 1st , .......it's now carving time . Greetz , Dieter
  18. Maybe , my little vids may help : Actually that Swedish/German book by Hans Nordin is the best in answering all questions concerning crankbait dynamics in terms of making them at home(sorry , no English version available) , ......but also Joe Buchers's "Crankbait Secrets " contains a whole chapter dealing on crankbait dynamics . Greetz , diemai
  19. Hi there , folks , Some months ago I had put up the following video on YouTube , ....some of you fellas out there might have already seen it : In a recent comment on on this video someone stated that he could not quite figure out about my given building instructions , ....so I've made up my mind to do an instructional video this morning . My apologies for the video not being too clear , I should have used the close-up function of the camera , but I was not sure , whether it would work out , .....surely next time I will ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn7y1C6y-_4 Greetz , Dieter
  20. Check out this video , a good example for consistency in a home builder's timber lures serial manufacturing , ......certainly you'd need a sawblade matching the thickness of your lip material . The portions of interest are shown during the first half of part 2 , .......I have also linked part 1 for completeness ! Part 1 : Part 2 : Cheers and good luck , diemai
  21. @ JBlaze Thanks for info , .....sadly I'm a computer dummy either , ....but I guess I can about figure out what is going on , ........the site is attacked by a very high amount of spam , so the spam monitoring takes a long time to sort these out , ......due to the sheer amounts of spams this is taking a longer time resulting into sluggish uploads and submissions . I'd like to have these bloody spam buggas fried in hot oil ! Just an explanation of a complete dummy , though , .......cheers , Dieter
  22. ...............and I' ve though , it was only on my computer ? About 10 hours from now the site was down for maintainance , I was just about to transmit a PM ....but same problem again ! But as I saw just now , the PM was still submitted four or five times , as I had impatiently hammered the button ! Also have this slow -loading problem for more than a week now , ...but there was one short part inbetween , when it went at usual speed . Hope , it's gonna be fixed soon , ......cheers , diemai
  23. Actually I remembered a 6" balsa blank that had been given to me many years ago , ...mounted a big lip to make up for a deep diver . That most buoyant thing would not go down too far and popped back up just like a missile launched from a submarine ! Taped a lot of lead ballast to the belly only to find out that the reamaining buoancy was OK , but the lure would not wiggle anymore , just dig straight down . I remembered to have read , that ballast placed in the back of a lure would enhance the wiggle , ....so , ...in a nutshell , ....after having placed about 1/3 of the entire ballast into the back , it swum very nice , steep and deep dive with a good wobble to it , too ! Remembering this made me to think that ballast placed higher in the body might work on your project as well . Good luck , Dieter PS : I did not consider about shotgun shot sold for reloading , ...should be available in different diametres , I suppose .
  24. Interesting concept , Mark , .......if a rattle effect is not that important , you might also use leadballs instead of steel BBs , .........not talking 'bout split shot though , as these are not evenly round , but maybe blackpowder arms ammo in smaller calibers , .....if these should still be too large , maybe round airgun pellets of .177 or .22 cal. ? The other day I was fortunate to find such leadballs(no firearm or airgun ammo , though)on a local site and ordered for 1 kilogram each in 5,1mm and 7mm dia , ......I need these for my lures holding lengthwise shifting weights for an enhanced casting performance . You could also enhance the function of these crosswise weight chambers by placing them as far upward towards the back of the lureblank as possible , .......as far as the general shape of it allows for this , off course . The further upward from the lengthwise center of gravity the ballast is located , the easier it would take the lure out of balance , ...which would be your goal of design , I assume . For example , ....this way you could use smaller weights still retaining the effect of bigger ones placed lower in the body , I guess . Good luck , ....cheers , Dieter
