Some vids on lure production around , ...here is one showing parts of the making of the famous "Nils Master Invincible" at "Finlandia Uistin" in Finland ,.....appearing in the end of the video the two brothers Hannu and Kalevi Kangas , which founded the company during the 1960's . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJqqxNnrjkU Another one : greetz , diemai

I reckon , that #1 with it's tapered tail would perform the most pronounced wiggle , ...you're on the right path ! good luck , diemai

Still having up to 13 years to go I can't deny a certain grade of envy , ........just enjoy yourself , mate ! greetz , diemai

I like those underwater sequences , ...wonder whether fish would hear the bait's noises the same way we do ? If so , I reckon they'd rather bite the lures out of annoyance rather than being hungry ! Thanks for sharing , Vic , ..........greetz , Dieter

Hi there , folks , Yesterday I've been fishing a smaller old gravel pit owned by a fishing club where I have membership . Cast and worked back a homemade "Heiddy" sinking glider(in Europe we call it a jerkbait)for the third time and suddenly had a fish on , ..........after hauling back twice to set the hooks I've felt secure enough to try and capture the event on film and picked out my camera from my jacket's chest pocket . In expectation to have hooked a small pike , which is the typical target species for glidebaits over here(well , not only small ones ) , I was pretty much surprised to see a nice zander(close relative of your American walleye) surface and suddenly became very anxious that I might still loose it in the end , ........I did not even know , that this species was stocked in that pond , and usually they hardly take such kinda lures as well . But everything went on fine and I was able to land that well fed fish of 27" length , ......good average size but big for that pond , I suppose . This catch was the only one for that session yesterday , but it surely made my day ! But such attempts filming fighting fish after having hooked them could also go terribly wrong , as I've experienced a few months ago : But this time it worked out , ......here is another picture of the zander and lure ! greetz , diemai

@ Mags I'm using the round and oval router bits from the "Dremel" accessories range , for larger indentions on bigger lures it is of advantage to pre-drill the depth of the dimple and just widen the hole towards the circumferrence . Make sure not to guide the rotating tool sidewards towards the rim but rather more from the outside to the center or paralell following the circumferrence , ...never apply too much pressure , .......if you slide it over the rim accidentally , you're most likely messed up , as no wood filler may help on that thin and delicate location . But I haven't used those bits on balsa before but abachiwood , which is a bit more dense than the darker and harder balsa, ...but similar in grain . good luck , ....greetz , diemai

Thanks a lot , guys , ....I just knew , that these vids would catch someone's interest in here ! Nothing for me , though , .......as I prefer individual carving , but maybe useful for those , that want to knock out larger amounts of clones . First time watching I've thought , that this thing works too darn slow , ......but it came to my mind pretty fast , that the slow feed should provide a perfectly smooth surface , probably no sanding on the wood blank even required , ....probably only a brief "once-over" on the dipped sealer or primer coats(the Finnish fellas most likely do their lures that way) . greetz , diemai

You make me blush , guys , ...thanks a lot ! greetz , Dieter

Hi , folks , Just came across these two vids on YouTube , ........thought that I might point it out in here as I'm sure , that some fellas might be interested : Quite ingenious homemade design from Finland , I'd say ! greetz , diemai

@ mark poulson Thanks a lot for your describtions on topwater gliders , ......I did not know yet , that differently sized baits should probably have a different hang angle . Balancing a topwater glider is still a bit different compared to sinking gliders IMO , ........these are said to best sink in a horizontal level to look more natural . Their glide action is also influenced by body shape , more than with topwaters , .....its a bit hard to explain , but I've got the feeling , that on some designs it's the lead ballast is causing the lure to dart sidewards and on other rather more the shape or size of the head portion(off course in connection with the ballast) , ........the results are comparable , anyway . @ Vodkaman I'm aware of the issues when tub testing glider baits , Dave, ..........first due to space reasons , as you've stated and second , ......I'm using a very soft ice rod with mono line , not of advantage as well ! I will surely finish and throw them some day , .......as I said in the vid , ......they might still catch ! @ Sonny.Barile Absolutely no issues sanding this PVC hardfoam of mine ,........ worked it down on a grinding wheel at work and also on a 40grit sanding disc at home , ....I guess , before it MIGHT start to melt , one oughta "dust" one yard length or two of it extremely fast , ...if at all ! As said before , I will paint these lure , and still throw them ! @ RiverMan Its only that I tried to downsize proven , larger lures in about scale , ......I will try it some day to make a wider version to try , .......I have made some of such quite accurately downscaled gliders(with their ballast concentrated on one or two spots) before , they all did not perform as well as their "bigger brothers" . And off course , a lack of length also means less guidance through the water , ....but at least I had hoped for the lures to swim sharper curves , did not expect long glides from the start ! @ RayburnGuy Ben , ...looks like I've probably hijacked your thread a bit , ........sorry that it turned out to be , wasn't my intention ! greetz , Dieter

Hi , folks , ..............just made my little testing video this morning , .......the lures do not swim very well this way . To me this is evidence , that the ballast of glidebaits MUST be CONCENTRATED at certain locations of the belly to achieve a nice glide . I've just though , that the process of balancing these kinda baits would be a little easier by glueing in sheet , ....also with baits of this small size there probably might not be enough room for wider leadholes . Anyway , I've learned from it ! @ Sonny.Barile ...........not only that topcoats are more subject to chipping off from sharper edges , ....some guys on a German site wrote that the still liquid epoxy would not easily set at such edges but flow towards more even planes and finally set there , .........they had observed this even running their lures in rotisseries ! greetz , Dieter
-
@ Sonny. Barile That bait's periphery is fully rounded , .......most of these flat gliders are made like this , except if a kinda diving plane is needed on floating/diving models . But I also have one or two homemades made by a Belgian guy , which are kept flat along their outline , just the cornes are slightly broken , .......in my opinion their action is not as fluent and pronounced as with gliders made more streamlined with their rounded periphery . Sharp corners might also cause problems about proper adhesion of epoxy topcoats . @ Vodkaman Hope the symptoms are not that bad , Dave , ........I'm presently carving on dozens of different blanks , but no time to finish them and make testing videos ,.......gotta wait for the winter break ! @ Rayburn Guy That blank's shape I've made after my memory , supposed to be close to that "Roach" aka "Heiddy" from that Dutch site , ........actually I've cut it from a 20mm thick PVC board and after split the cut-out into halves with a fine grade saw ,....... but I don't wanna procceed with the twin before having tested this glider version , ....if it should not work out , I can still cut a lipslot into the second blank and render it into a crankbait . greetz , Dieter

Took a few pictures this evening showing that little PVC glider prototype , ......actually it is 63mm(2 1/2") in length , not 2 1/4" as I've said before . The width scratches 10mm . I've used 1mm thick roofing leadsheet for ballast , ....with these leadpieces it sinks real slow and level in a waterbucket , ......but would surely sink faster after having them glued in and having finally painted the lure . The big question is , whether it would perform well in the end , .......usually the ballast of gliders is concentrated in weightholes fore and aft or just inside of only one belly hole , .........in this case the ballast passes along almost the entire length of the lure , so I wonder , which effect this would have on the swimming action later ? It is just very fast and convinient making and trimming these little PVC blanks , just cutting the lead sheet to approbiate sizes and test the fall rate and position in a water bucket until satisfied ,..... no need for finding out about lead slug sizes and locations and where to drill the holes , .....just placing the lead sheet into the slot of the wire form , it's so simple , ........BUT WOULD IT WORK OUT ??? Glued in the harness and ballast by now , gonna trim the excess glue on Monday and in case of success I'm gonna make a little video of that blank in action somewhen during next week , ...really eager to know , whether it would perform this way . greetz , Dieter

@ Rayburn Guy Sorry for having found this thread a bit late , Ben , .......just mean to tell you to check out this Dutch site(english version) , a few design sketches and construction plans of gliders(in Europe we call them jerkbaits) to be found in there : http://www.lurebuild...l/indexeng.html My favourites there are "Roach" aka "Heiddy" and the lathe-turned "Divani Zig-Zag" , both are easy to build . One thing to consider about adapting the pike lure sizes to smaller bass sizes is to use more buoyant wood to be able to place sufficient ballast for proper glide performance , .....I'm just making two 2 1/4" "Heiddy" versions of PVC decking ,...... wonder whether they'd perform in the end . greetz , Dieter

Update : Just starting getting involved into another hardbait topic , ........Email notification works on that one , .......hopefully I would see now , whether it would work on this particular thread as well ! Busy into personal conversations presently , no problems about Email noticications with these either . Greetz , Dieter

Welcome aboard , mate , ........apart from thoroughly browsing this site you may also utilize Google and the search function of YouTube , type in terms like lurebuilding , luremaking , making wooden lures , making wobblers , making crankbaits , ...etc . , .......lots of material should be found in there as well . There are also some books on luremaking available , if you're ready to spend some money on such , have a look in here : http://www.tackleund...g-books-review/ good luck , diemai

Thanks a lot , Jerry ,...........hopefully they'd find the mistake ! Greetz , Dieter

@ redg8r Yesterday I had received an Email notification on another older thread but not this particular one , ........probably I have forgotten to enable the reply options in here , .......only did it in my personal settings , ..........and in that older thread I had done it before , anyway . greetz , Dieter PS: Just checked back , .......under "more reply options" it says "you are currently following this topic" , .......but yet I have not received any Email notifications on THIS thread !
-
Ben , I've received an Email notification , that you have quoted my post(your post # 27 in this thread) , but yet haven't got any notification abou your reply post # 29 in here , ...........very strange indeed . Gotta look through the notification options again tonite , ......going fishing now ! greetz, Dieter

@ RaburnGuy ...............guess I did , Ben , ................tried twice ! greetz , Dieter

Hhhmm , ......some more posts have been made in this topic , but I have not received any Email notifications , though I've ticked the approbiate squares under "my settings" and "notification options" , ......the two squares for "list" and "Email" , ....not the one "app" . I've received Email notifications for personal conversations yesterday , as two fellow members did contact me(ticked these squares as well) , ....but got no notifications for topic replies that were made ! Have I still overlooked something ? greetz , diemai

You have to be aware , that your lure would most likely swim a little different , after you would have finally embedded that taped weight into the belly and painted over the weight hole ! Now the weight sits a bit higher compared to being taped underneath the belly , thus has a bit less of a "keel" function , ........also your lure would be a little less buoyant , as you remove buoyant material to insert the ballast piece . To gain as much of a "keel" function as possible , do not use cylindrical or drum-shaped lead chunks placed into deeply drilled belly holes , but beat your lead chunks flat into a kinda brick shape and insert them into flat pouches cut ou with "Dremel" router bits(provided that the lure dimensions allow for sufficient space to do so) . The closer your ballast sits to the belly outline , the more sideward stability you build in to your bait . good luck , diemai

You'd have problems to find such props with a bearing bushing , only the plain ones around , as fas as I'm concerned . I'm utilizing small pop rivet heads of aluminum to act as bearing bushings , ....without these those props are quite unreliable to spin properly . Doesn't look as neat , but does work fine for me . good luck , diemai

Thanks a lot for your help both of you , Ben and Jerry , .........guess I've found my way now to enable the Email notifications , .... looks like the avatar has already been installed by you , Jerry ! Thanks so much , friends , ...........greetz , Dieter

How can I re-install my avatar picture and what do I have to do to recieve Email reply notifications ? Haven't been in much lately , but yesterday I've replied to a crankbait topic , .........I believed to have enabled Email notifications , but I did not receive any , ...after checking back that particular thread this morning I saw that replies have been already made . I've only ticked "follow this topic" under "post options" , .......not enough ? Also briefly tried about putting back my avatar into the left column of each of my posts , but obviously I've done something wrong ! Can someone lend me a hand , please ! Thanks , ...greetz , diemai
