I'll vote with a thumbs up. Some posts are still overwriting the ads on the right side but it's getting better. May just be my resolution as I'm using a square LCD panel rather than the newer wide screens.

I pondered building one too, but I watched the sales at Harbor Freight Tools and picked up a full size lathe. It has an all steel frame, a good sized motor and will handle stock to 40". For around $80 shipped I figured I'd have nearly that much in a homemade lathe by the time I got a comparable motor and the other parts needed. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=38515

I found a 12 pack of combs at the local $1 store. It had several different sizes and spacing. The $ store is a great place to get small clamps, etc.

Back in my Navy aircraft mechanic days we called those Safety Wire pliers. We used them to twist safety wire to secure engine bolts from loosening.

I used some of the Rustoleum Hammered plastic paint to repaint the plastic fenders on my trailer and used the metal version on the bolts. It's a good looking finish and matched the galvanized trailer nicely. I'm not sure either used alone would be durable enough to use for a lure finish. If an epoxy top coat would adhere to the hammer paint, you should get a cool looking lure.

I spent 18 years in the Navy Reserve. I was one of the last piston engine mechanics and I'm sure the military version of these pliers cost 100s of dollars, but these should do well for luremaking. Anyone that has ever worked on an airplane engine will recoginze these as safety wire pliers. They are used to twist stainless steel wire to keep nuts from backing off. The handle has a pull that is attached to a spiral rod that spins the pliers that are clamped to the wire. These are available at Harbor Freight Tools for around $7 to $10.

I gave that paint a try. I it's the same paint color change paint that the 'tuners' (in my day we were called hot-rodders) use to get their cars to change colors as it drives by. I got mine on clearance at Walmart. It worked fine, but I picked a lousy color for baits. Since is reacts to the angle of the sunlight, I'm not sure how much color change will happen under water. It's a three part process. Base coat + Color change coat + Clear coat. This is an automotive grade paint so make sure you vent well if you use it inside. It really stunk up the house. Gary

Great idea. Tangles will be at a minimum. I user a lot of large crankbaits/spinners for stripers. This would work for me too. Thanks Gary

I'm not sure if they ship outside of the USA, but for casting from a mold, look at the products from Alumilite or Smooth-on. Smooth-On - Mold Making and Casting Materials for a World of Applications! They sell the casting plastic that will float or sink. Casting Resin and Silicone Mold Making Rubber Sells the clear casting plastic plus microballons to make their plastics float. Also, check the lure makers products from Larry Dahlberg's site - www.huntforbigfish.com. He also has a great DVD on lure making covering both hard and soft baits. Good luck. Gary

I have a similar machine made by Delta. It's a good size and OK power. The only issue I've had is getting the upper wheel adjusted so that the blade doesn't wander and slip off. Gary
