  1. I've seen the SI in action and it's really cool. But I'd like to see some more players get in the game to maybe drive the prices down. Lowrance is rolling out it's new high-def units in Feb 2009. You might watch the clearance pages for Cabelas, BPS, etc to watch for deals on the older models. Also watch for last year's Navionic chips. You can really save some money, but you have to check the pages regularly.
  2. Great looking bait. Have you figured out the running depth yet?
  3. I've seen other posts about using the PC to control the camera. I'm gonna dig out the manual to see if I have that feature. I have a "middle of the road" Canon S3 IS. Not as many features as the bigger EOS series, but it covers my needs nicely. Even shoots 30 minute videos which covers my grandkids school presentations. Gary
  4. Great tips. Thank you. Gary
  5. Another place to find inexpensive lures to paint is the bargain bin at tackle counters. Some quality, but really ugly, lures get produced and end up being sold for a few dollars when the color doesn't 'catch' the angler. Lightly sand them and try your paint technique.
  6. The link works and that looks like a great resource. Thanks for this thread. I'm working to develop an 'after retirement' income stream and this is valuable information. Gary
  7. I went totally digital several years ago. Some tricks I recall from my 35mm days to eliminate camera shake for closeups was to use a remote shutter cable or the self timer. Most digitals have a self timer so set it for a few seconds and keep your hands off the camera and let it do it's thing. Gary
  8. Thanks guys. I've been looking for something with a defined pattern as I'm not so good at the free-hand painting yet. I saw a video where a guy mounted the pattern material in an embroidery hoop like my Mom used to do her crafting with. He simply held the lure up to the material and sprayed through. They are cheap so several could be set up in a vise and exchanged as desired. Gary
  9. Hummm... That gives me an idea. I wonder if some of the lace fabric patterns would work to give a firetiger it's stripes. Just wondering Gary
  10. After I posted this, I saw several posts on Feather Lite. That seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. I reviewed their website and they profiled a tackle builder that uses one of their other products to mix with the Feather Lite to add weight.
  11. I haven't done this yet, but I've been looking for a product like this for some time. Check out the following link from their website. It states you can mix the Feather Lite with their other cast material to adjust the boyancy of your lure. Custom Fishing Lures created with Feather Lite
  12. Several years ago, a co-worker made replicas of model car engines, etc. using a flexible mold and poured the replica with some type of epoxy or resin. The result was a rigid, paintable product. Can anyone suggest brand name of similar products? I was thinking this might be a possible process to "mold" crankbaits or swimbaits. Thanks for any guidance you can offer.
  13. Look at Harbor Freight tools. They usually have one on sale for around $60. They are starting to open more stores, but you can always scan the catalog. At least my local store is pretty good about returns. Spend $20 for one or their warranties and there's supposed to be no questions asked. Here a couple: Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices
  14. Those are purdy baits!!
  15. My local home stores sell it in the millwork dept. It's used to trim around doors and windows. It's a different material than the composite decking. The stuff look interesting. I'm looking to use it for building rod racks, etc. I need to see how well two pieces screwed together will hold. Or, if it will work with regular PVC plumbing glue. Some pieces have a nice wood looking texture and the simulated brick molding might turn on a lathe.
  16. I just found this. Very good tutorial. Gary
  17. Has anyone used the combo A/C-heater window units? I have a small work area set up in my office in the basement. The units are around $400. I'm sure they will pull a lot of power, but since I'm not heating/cooling it 24/7 it might be a safe way to to.
  18. Thanks guys. I have one of the Berkley's. Since I change out all my lines at least once yearly, I get tired of all the cranking. Maybe I can use the two ideas to build something to go with the Berkley.
  19. I bought two spray cans of glitter - one silver and one gold. I use the silver on dark lures and gold on light paint schemes. I just lightly 'dust' the bait and after it dries coat it with Devcon two ton. So far they've done well.
  20. I hope this isn't a duplicate. I lost my network connection just as I hit submit. I'm looking to build a motorized line winder to spool my reels. I did some searches but couldn't find a thread on the subject. Can anyone point me to some plans on building one? Thanks
  21. Thanks for the update. I'll be using light metal like the chatterbait blades.
  22. I love to fish the chatterbait-type lures but hate paying $5 for them. I've seen the blades in Jann's, etc. and wondered how they did. Thanks for the post. I'll include a few in my next order. I have dozens of jigs lying around.
  23. Those are cool. It's off to Home Depot for me. Gary
  24. I'm just getting to this and I'm going to spend the winter getting better at it. In N. Georgia, we can pretty much fish year-round especially for stripers. I'm a crankbait guy and I'm getting the hang of repaints. A buddy of mine used to make flexible molds from model car engines and reproduced them in a resin with clocks built in the base. I want to get the names of the materials he used to see if it is durable enough for crankbaits. Also, I want to expand into some woodworking building some rod racks and tackle centers. Gary
  25. Store bought is probably taboo, but I've been looking for a decent pack rod to put in my backpack. Cabelas sells several under their name. They range from a $20 composite to IM-6 in 6ft length. They may not the quality you are looking for, but they do exist.
