New Sunfish, we'll see how it does this weekend!
CL Rods commented on CL Rods's gallery image in Hard Baits
Well I have, but not recently. I used a Dremmel tool on the props on the sunfish version to give them a different reflective quality with light bouncing off the brass versus nickle. I have painted one side white and one side yellow, using enamel spray cans. It looks pretty good on a citrus shad. AND you can buy already painted props from the suppliers if you wanted them pre painted. They MIGHT be more durable, but I do not know what they are using to paint them with. -
Well like everyone just tweeking some sunfish/blue gill type baits as it is that time of year. Let me know what you think of the middle 'sunfish' , note I created a brushed brass look on the props. The one with the feather trailer caught a nice ~2#+ bass on its FIRST cast. The copper shad with flake also landed ~2# bass on about the 4th cast. So overall I am pretty happy with this batch. Sunfish based on this photo and a couple from my pond with real yellow bellies, in fact the kids call them yellow bellies! http://www.tackleunderground.com/photos/file.php?n=3631&w=l [\img]

Try using a simple mitre box, most come with 2 or 3 pre cut angles that if you were to hold a bait against the side of the mitre box, with a jig supporting the bait at the proper angle to be able to use one of the precut slots, it works pretty well for a simple method. Just make sure you use a fine tooth saw. You can create a jig to support the bait from the blank wood you cut the shape from to begin with as it will match up perfectly to support it.

bbduc, it was only a test to see if the circuit board lip dove AND swam any differently. It is negligible and I would have to attribute the difference to the thickness. Other than an initial turn of the handle to get the bait down, the baits behave identically but from my observations the circuit board lip dives quicker.

Diemai, it is balsa on these versions. The key is you don't want them too heavy, the beads are hollow versions and minimal belly weighting. They cast very well at this weight. I do a basswood version also, but face it, basswood just takes longer to handle and work with so I have begun to really like the balsa. The basswood is a tad heavier and thus casts a little further, but the down side is the bouyancy difference requires a smaller rear prop than an equivalent sized balsa version. The basswood version would probably hold up to toothy fish better, but I target LM & SM Bass predominantly. If I still lived up north I KNOW the Pike and Musky would eat em up!

getting slight curvature in Lexan to make Rapala floater style lip
CL Rods replied to pizza's topic in Hard Baits
I have been using a couple of different sizes for poppers and jerkbait lips and have found it quite easy to cup them. I cut the shape I want, grab it with some large pliers, stick it in boiling water, wait a bit and apply a little pressure and it will bend and hold the shape. For lips I just make sure I grip it on the line that I need to follow for the lip and press down on the bottom of the pot and the lip will bend at the point it is gripped with the pliers. Examples are below. -
OK, no answers on that one. How about just the 'mossy brown' color description? Is this a trade secret that no one wants to answer? Someone has to know as it is commercially being used by a couple of bait manufacturers.

Wow another color question. Lucky Craft Pearl Ayu baits have what my wife calls MOSSY GREEN. It appears to be a translucent color unless really layered on, and has brown and green qualities. If anyone knows what this paint color really is, please chime in. If you know how to duplicate it REALLY WELL, please let me know. I have tried layering translucent browns and greens and yellows and just can't quite nail it. So if you can help please respone or PM. Thanks, Charlie

Thanks for the info Mark, I will give them a try because the ETEX does seem to be a little more demanding on the ratio of the mix and syringes seemed to be the way to go as I am usually doing a smaller volume. And it may be the batch I got from Hobby Town were just faulty some how, but I certainly won't use them any more.

If your asking a question I thnk something is lost in the translation but I take a guess you are asking how they were made, so I can only speak for mine. The blue gill is done with a combination of layering colors through various mesh netting and templates with an airbrush. The white and black shad rap with the yellow lateral line was done with by using a template for the line and spraying it with an airbrush the spatter was done by using a stiff bristle brush, then dripping the black paint on to the brush and thumbing over the bristles to splatter the paint on to the lure.

I used to have issues with Etex, and I had been using syringes to accurately measure the 2 parts. When I QUIT using syringes I quit having problems. I tried 2 different versions from 2 different suppliers and I think that many syringes must have some form of ??? to lubricate them that caused issues with both fish eyes and setting up properly. But the example of those two baits seems to be more than just setting up properly, but I would really eliminate use of syringes first.
