  1. Don't skimp on primer, get a good quality one, acrylic preferably.... This lure has caught several muskies and the wood is yet to be exposed.
  2. Griffond, 1/4'' is not thick enough in my opinion. I would suggest 1/2'' or 5/8'' thick. You have to consider your hook hangers wether it's screw eyes anchored in hardwood dowels like Spoonplugger Gino does or wire thru. For the woods you mentioned, I would use the hardwood dowel method. I build 9'', 11'' and 13'' drop belly gliders out of hardwoods. If you're looking for a long glide action build a more cylindrical type glider similar to a Manta. s56
  3. I saw this product on another forum and subsequently did a search here on TU. In 2003 Lincoya mentions he started using this water based sealer. Has anyone else used it? Anything to report after 10 years Gene? Thanks s56
  4. I've tried Rustoleum " specialty glow ". I've brushed it with an acid brush and cleared it with etex. The brush marks really show once the lure lights up. I should've used a foam brush instead. They claim it lasts for hours. I can't confirm how long it lasts 'cause it was just a curiosity thing for me. I tried it, it worked and put it away. Now, I might revisit it again. I guess I would rate it to a least a 5 'cause I haven't tried anything else to compare it against. A friend diluted his and shot it through and airbrush. Hope this helps. s56
  5. Some countries promote catch and release that with time allows fisheries to flourish.........and then you have some countries that force you to harvest the fish because catch and release is considered inhumane and therefore banned resulting in less fish....... Mmmm, maybe that's why certain lures don't last as long as others? The skill required to catch more fish may not be a factor either, eh diemai? s56
  6. Someone's thinking out of the box at that company!
  7. Over the course of 3 years, I had a lure that was all beaten up, it had caught so many muskies. I decided to strip it down and rebuild it again........it never caught fish after that. Now I just retire them. s56
  8. Awesome thread Dave! You are bang on about " What is so good about hunting" . We see it often when musky fishing. Muskies are notorious followers of baits and when they follow to the boat an oval or figure 8 at boatside makes them strike 80% of the time. s56
  9. I've had a Makrolon polycarbonate 1/8'' thick lip break in half on a lure I built for a guide. It was a horizontal break. The shape of the lip and angle closely resembles that of a Stalker. Cold weather and the lure being slapped against the water to remove weeds was the cause according to the guide. I too didn't think polycarbonate could break as it's never happened to me and I make my lures pound bottom. According to my polycarbonate supplier it's not supposed to break. For all I know it was probably stepped on. s56
  10. With time you'll be able to look at a lure and shape by eye like I did on this one. The bottom is 5 3/4'' and I super sized it to 11 1/2'' without templates. I had to use wood putty to build up the belly because it was initially supposed to be another lure that had a straight belly from head to tail. Cedar was used and all done with a rasp and a riffler. Now let's hope it runs LoL!
  11. Thanks Dave. I'll post my results.
  12. Yeah, I suspect there will be more nose dive and will probably make the lure run close to 45 degrees, not what I want but will give it a try anyways. Thanks guys! s56
  13. Thinking of using 3/16'' polycarbonate instead of 1/8'' on some deep diving lures. Will it change the action? Thanks s56

    Night Craw 1.5

    Love the contrast!

    Shiner

    Very nice!
  16. The rear seems to have been bored and filled with epoxy. I can't tell from the pic but the hanger was probably anchored in the epoxy?
  17. I think you're going to have to epoxy the body to the shaft regardless of what you use as a spacer. If I was building that kind of lure I would epoxy a rivet at both ends. s54
  18. It's possible. I just did it for this larger musky crank lip. The female die is 7/8'' wide and 5/8'' deep. I used a broomstick instead of the male die. It worked better when I used the heat gun. You may be able to replicate if it falls within these dimensions. Or you could just supersize the lip a bit. This was done real fast just to see if it would work. Sorry about the watermark. s54
  19. I've cold bent 3/16'' lexan with this tool for a Grandma lip. Don't go beyond 90 degrees otherwise it's going to crack. My polycarbonate supplier told me you can cold bend thinner sheets in half without having them break. I haven't tried it to confirm. You can get this tool at Leevalley.com Do a search for metal bender. Hope this helps. s54
  20. Can't speak for the other topcoats but Etex will gloss any color it covers. s54
  21. I finish off with a curved riffler. It's sweet on WRC. s54 riffler.bmp riffler.bmp riffler.bmp riffler.bmp riffler.bmp riffler.bmp riffler.bmp riffler.bmp riffler.bmp

    Bondo

    Thanks Woodie. s54
  23. Seeking 56

    Bondo

Has anyone ever used it as a sealer? I've been shaping a lure with a rasp and am thinking there should be enough of a bite to put a thin layer of bondo as a protective coat. But then, I'm thinking about impact and possible cracks? The additional weight will not be an issue on this lure. s54
  24. Another way to add glitter is to mix it in the 1st coat of clear and pour it on starting from the head of the lure. Hang until dry. Subsequent coats are brushed on without glitter. It gives a very uniform look. The only drawback from pouring is there's lots of waste. Now, I just use rattlecan glitter. s54
  25. On tapered baits I've been using a rasp for those WRC rings, works great. Shapes well and less sanding. s54
