I have tried a few brands of plastisol, and all the ones I have used, if you pour / inject your lures, and leave them on your trays for 3 weeks, the smell should be gone. Usually in the lures from store that smell, those were bagged fairly soon after removing from the injector I would bet. There is one saltwater brand that I used to use a long time ago, that evidently changed their plastisol. They must bag it fast, it has the strongest smell, I forget what brand plastisol it is, its the fresh vinyl smell. Anyway, if you leave they cure in the open a/c, you should get rid of your problem.

Bears Shooting Star Vs High Rock Mold Double Barrel ?
Kajan replied to Little man baits's topic in Soft Plastics
Seems like a set up thread to me. But since its started, I'll add my 2 cents in since I make the paddles used in Bears stir system that I designed for my own use years ago. I have not tested a smaller off center stir system, but I would bet it will have issues after testing all styles I did before coming up with current Paddle Bears system uses. Now what people who inject do, they put injector into the pot, inject the molds, turn stir system on for a few seconds then when finished injecting, put injector back in the warm pot. But, the most labor intensive problem will be mixing your plastic to temp without a stir system. Especially with your harder formula plastisols. You will get a hotter bottom layer of plastic and scorch your plastic without a good stir system.. Like mentioned earlier, you will notice with your transparent and white lures. I would bet some of you that have pots with no stir system right now have this issue, but you don't notice because of the darker opeque' colours that are often used in bass fishing. On a side note, I personally would not like to have a set up where I had to use a Hand whisk to mix my plastic. -
What brand plastic has that smell? I have smelled some that smelled like vinyl. I forget the brand. I don't know how to get rid of the smell until lures are 100% cures, but you can mask the smell with scents.

If you have the pot, then this thread might help you out. http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/index.php?/topic/14203-pouring-station/?hl=kajan#entry106399

I make my blood lines in one pc rtv molds using my Presto pots in my pouring station. The easiest way is, if you are using rtv, or pop or dwp, resin ect ect, put a pc of alum on bottom so it slides easy, and move your mold under the nozel instead of trying to pour by hand.

Best way I found was with presto pot with stir system. You can buy from Bear at Bearsbaits or you can make your own, but I would suggest getting his stir system. My opinion, pot has to have a stir system to assure you never forget to stir and burn your plastic, also goes thru phases much better. Here is a pic of mine: www.bearsbaitsforum.com/index.php?topic=5608.0

I have seen those glow powders. Never tried them because of their high prices. I have been fishing glow lures since Late 70's or early 80's. Mann was one of the first companies that had it in their lures. Anyway, funny thing about glow, which I know some fresh water guys are gona argue with me about is, I have never ever caught a fish in total darkness with a glow lure. It works at night under a light source, but not tossing into dark water. I use it mostly for Day time fishing.

Point I was tryin to make was, I have heard all kind of Scientific theorys of what colours fish see and don't. But I know for a fact fish see bou'cou' of the slightest colour changes, or at least the colour changes make them eat a lure or not. So regardless of the cones in the fish's eyes, they still have no clue what the fish sees in my opinion. But like I said, the " GLow of the UV" , I have never tried it, so not sure if it will work. Only true way I would think is if it has been tried for a long time to see for sure. Just like they use glowing sticks for sword fish in the Gulf and ocean at nite, it might work. Might not work for other saltwater species. But I have a theory also LOL, I would think it will work for saltwater fish who are feeding hard as long as its in the correct colour

I would have to think most Scientists are very educated, extremely intelligent. But most probably never fished. So everything they talk about with fish / colours are theoretical. But on the UV part, I think it could possibly be a plus in catchin fish in Deeper water where its below the point where regular light stops traveling, although I have never tried it to see if it makes a differance.

My Work Stations (im Very Proud Of How They Turned Out)

Very simular to what Nova said. In 1987 I was having trouble with sporting good store storing enough of the Mann's 4" stingray grubs. I would buy them in 100 packs. SO forced me to do something, so I made some crude molds, poured me some lures in couple of the most used colours to keep up with fishin demands. Really enjoyed makin my own designs, even though I had taken a decade off from pourin. But all the soft plastics I use are lures I have designed my self, molded and poured.

LOL, yea I don't think I would trust many people cuttn on a mold. Unless they specialize in molds dat is. Funny, I work with metal for a living and all my molds are RTV

OK, still as of now, this country still has a capitalist economy. What I would like to see in a soft plastic lure is: Plastic that is tough Can be poured/injected in any hardness Plastisol is transparent once it is heated and has gone thru its phases Has a very long shelf life Odor that dissipates after its cured After discarded, will dissolve in water with no harmful chemicals in 30-60 days Cost would not be out of the normal price range for average hand pour/injection guys Should have no or minimal bubbles while using product Should not yellow if no overheating occoured When it reaches its working temperature, has enough body to hold glitter but not so thick as to impede hand pouring. I hope someone who is much smarter than me and has the resources could come up with this product. But for me it has to have all these abilities. Hardest one to acheive would probably be #3, which is a must for me.

Since the lures are oil based, they seem to break down here in salt water as is. But like I said, I think if lures were not discarded or not allowed to fly off the hook so easy, problem would be much less.

Must be a freshwater issue. I say this because I have cleaned 10's of thousands of speckled trout and redfish, and I can only remember 3 times I cleaned fish that had plastic in their stomachs. I can only think of two things that might be happening. One might be, alot of freshwater fishermen in land locked water where lures fall off the hook or tossed in the water drop down into structure where sun is not able to break the plastic down. Second, maybe fresh water lures are made too soft and they fall off the hook too easily and are lost in the water. Its not very often saltwater lures fly off your hook while fighting a fish. Only brand that comes to mind, which is very soft plastic, is Bassassassin. So my fix for part of the issue would be, Not tossing old lures into the water, second, Maybe instead of wanting the mass's to go (GREEN) which seems to be a liberal code word, the market should start making lures with harder plastics.

Might have amber in it

Anyone who hand pours should invest in a presto pot with a stir system with the valve. Best way to hand pour there is.
-
Just add the scent to your lures as you fish, much better. If you add the scent to the bags it discolours lighter colour lures.

Seems one statment I made has cause bou'cou' friction. Well I have made my own molds and lures since 1987. Mostly because the stores could not keep up with the plastics I used catchin speckled trout. So I was forced to make my own in a few colours that I used the most. For the record, I don't own one alum mold or an injector, I make all my own molds and pour from my own pots. I took some information I learned on TU (which if you look back I gave TU acknowlegment of), to make my own pots which I think I made great improvments on, which I shared here. So wanted to get that all out der. Bear is a frien' of mine, I am not a member of any fan clubs, of any sports people, or any bass fishermen, ect. THere are people I care to talk to and others I don't, freins, acquaintances, and Others. Seems I will now have to consider Bob a " Other". I try to state facts when IL post, but evidently some " Others" dont' like facts. So I hope I cleared up the murky susbstance that " Others" have spued out onto this forum.

Yea like Jeff said, except I would pour at 300 or just under should hlep. This might be hard to do using a microwave. I only pour one pc RTV molds, why I use a presto pot with stir system with valve, definatly best method to pour one pc molds in my opinion.

Getting Started, Cost Analysis Logistics Question
Kajan replied to ParkerFly's topic in Soft Plastics
I prefer RTV, but with dat said, I also prefer single cavity molds , much easier to do laminates with a presto pot with a valve, which in my opinion is the only way to pour one pc molds.
