Bottom view of waterbug. I'm still trying to decide how to paint the underside and haven't been to happy yet. Carved legs with bristle tips and eyes on the bottom. I like how the underside turned out, but still not sure what color ot finish it in. Hand and rattle can painted.
Sinking basswood diving beetle, appr. 2.5 inches. It has a strange darting, diving action that reminds me slightly of a jig with a lot of action. Not originally the action I wanted, but actually imitates an erratic beetle very well.
I've been doing it on artist's tracing paper which is a little tougher than tissue paper (plus I have two huge rolls laying around). It's still best to attach it either to paper or foil to print it, but then it can be easily laid over paint or used with the foil. The rolls should last my lifetime.
I've been just using double stick carpet tape. It holds for me while I carve and has to be lightly pried apart after carving. I've used it to join halves and segments at the same time (Some swimbaits I've been doing both so I could put weights in without them showing - carve the weight holes inside the body). Just another option if you're not doing too many baits. I had wondered how others were cutting their joints also - good post.
Thanks, I never knew I could find a local source for wire (Ace has it here). I never had a problem tuning balsa baits with the harder wire since most of the tuning was just side to side. I also usually make them with epoxy running clear through from the nose to tail wire (and into the weight hole), with the wires maybe 1/2 - 1" long depending on the size of the lure. What size of wire do most of you use for the larger musky sized baits?

I have basswood that is one and one eight inch thick by 2 1/2" to 8" wide and about 3 feet long. A local furniture manufacturer sold me stacks of it approximately 4 foot by 3 foot by 5 feet high ($5 per bundle - I got 2). It should last for a while. It would probably work better with the legs attached with screw eyes. I have 2 or 3 other different frogs carved waiting to be finished.
Swims so-so, more of a twitch bait with fair swimming at slow speeds. I may add a lip - I'll test it out more when I have some open water to test it (I was anxious to finish a few lures so didn't test it much before finishing). Photo finish was partly due to my airbrush needing a major overhaul.
