Newbie Question About Painting Plastic Swimbaits.
Frank replied to milrtyme24's topic in Soft Plastics
I will start by saying I dont just paint a few at a time but I do have airbrushes for every color. I know it is a pain to clean but I use acetone and a pipe cleaner. For real small amount I dont put a cup on just put drops right in the brush. You should be able to find cheaper brushes for colors that dont matter much. On the Lurecraft paint it tend to dry out and get thick so make sure to keep the lid tight. Frank -
Yes it is very wide open. Another bit of news. I talked with Larry Dahlberg, he mentioned that he and River2sea were going to have a new bait contest. This is what he told me as of last week, It will be for NEW baits and NEW ideas. Basically building a better mouse trap not for artwork, so the profesional artist wont matter. The winner will have there baits patended and produced by River2sea with very fair royaltys sent to them from River2sea. Now I know there will be alot of questions but I really dont know much else. One comment I made to Larry was a patent is no good if you cant defend it, he responded that would be taken care of too. So keep your ears open and you eyes on your computer screen. Dont know if I would ever get a chance to do this on my own but with there help at least I have a chance. More food for thought. Frank

I am under the impression that they are out. Don said just call and ask them for it. Like I believe I said before those are just a few thing that stuck in my mind there were many more. I am sure in due time they will add them to the internet site but for now I guess it is word of mouth. Give Bruce a call. Frank

Spike it came out with an injection machine that used a pellet form of plastic, that had color and glitter in it already to pour in the machine and be used. The machine had molds made by Basstackle that had a custom hinge and handles to open them up with. so if you were wondering why he had a new mold with hinges that is why. The bacis's on the machine is that it has a tower with guages and buttons in front. It was not on so what exactly they were is just a guess but temp and inject were two of them. Below there was an automatic clamp and injection port. It cycles about every two minutes but takes the plastic from a pellet form to an injected bait every two minutes. It was a single color unit but is capable of making baits like there popular spikadelic versions. I talked with them alot about this but it just did not cycle fast enough for me and what I need. We also talked about a bigger machine which is in the future for me for sure. My focus is more on that then anything else. Out of respect for the rules for Icast I did not take a picture of it. It really was an impressive unit and looks well made. Sitting down and talking to Don and Bruce I found out they have alot of products that are not on any site and are so busy it will be awhile before they get time to deal with adding them to the site. Actually Bruce did not sit to much he was talking to alot of people all the time. One part of the convarsation he asked how many baits I can produce by hand, with that said I think he was surprised at how many I do. That is when I realized they dont really know how we work( little home guys). Let me plug a few items that really stand out in my mind that I think will do well for them. One is a product called suspendasol, a product the will keep salt and glitter suspended for alot longer than the current plastisol. Two is they have a scent that is real close to a real popular bait.If you want to try it just call and ask for the smelly stuff from Icast. They did warn us about using it as it smells so bad they dont make it at there factory, they make it in the woods somewhere. One of my customers went with me and looked at me to see if I would add it to his baits, I responded not at my house. All in all it was a great show. Hope it will be on everybodys to do list in the future. One note I was not real impressed in the new products area not to many new looking baits there. Frank

Very nice looking baits Madeye. Thank You for sharing. Very original looks. I an guessing that there is no one that could help you there? The crab is for salt water use? I think it will look real good in the surf. Frank

I went and saw alot of things. Anything in perticular you want to know. If I know I will pass it along. I did finally meet Kevin and Bob from Basstackle.com. Also met both of there fathers and realize now why they are such good people. New products area was a little same old same old. Frank

I am not defending them, but I trully believe they dont know exactly how we heat up the plastic. We all know that we heat in a micro but they dont, they use heat exchangers. Which cycles plastic through every other shot. I spoke with them before about a machine that I could use for more of a production enviroment. They said they were coming out with a new one at I cast, the reason I went in the first place. Now when I saw the machine and found out it cycles about every two minutes it was not for me at that point I realized they were not in tune with what we all are doing. Not a bad thing they just did not realize the numbers we can produce. So educating them is the best bet. Frank

I spoke to Bruce and Don at Icast last week, very nice guys. Real easy to talk with. Now people have to understand they are more from the mass producing side of things and there products are not used like the small guys do. So your input to them will help them try and please most but not all of us. The nice thing is they actually make it so changing a product does not have to be a big ordeal, in fact they probably have a product that you might like. I know they said they have many more products that are not on there site. To get this kind of help from a company like this is like gold. They actually knew I really dont use many of there products and still did not give me the hard sell. Great company and real down to earth NICE guys. Frank

But they are laminates right. Frank

Anyone Have This Mold And Can Tell Me
Frank replied to Twisted Liqiud Baits's topic in Soft Plastics
The hole in mine is .125 with an outer dimension of around .360. The height is as long as you want to cut it, but uncut about .250. He is pretty easy to deal with if you want a differant center hole size. The hole on the pic looks bigger than mine so maybe that one is one he ordered something differant. Hope this helps. Frank -
What mold are you saying cant be a laminate? Have not seen one that cant be laminated from Basstackle. Frank

I do this two ways. Just fill and shoot or leave it in the presto and just shoot. If I have alot of molds I leave it in, if not just fill and shoot. I guess I dont understand how the perging works. But when it does get hot you have all the time in the world to shoot and pause or use the Twinjector at will. You know what I dont think any one has brought up is the hole in the tip I think bears is bigger or maybe the biggest. Maybe the reason it seams to not clog so quick. Just a thought. I know one thing for sure when they get hot they are just as dangerous as the plastic in them. It takes my Twinjector a long long time to cool and change colors. Frank
-
Why do you perge the injector? And why does it need to be hot? I know there is one injector that is thin wall just like bears, Jacobs injector is just that and with a tapered nozzle is fits almost anything and has a pin. Frank
-
Common sence would tell you that the pin has to be lined up with the slot before you install. I know it can be a little time comsuming lining them up but I have had no issue with it. There is a few videos of injectors that have no safety device on it , that in inself shows how an accident can happen in the blink of an eye. One show him expelling plastic and the tip falls off, another one hows the tip coming off when the injector is lifted off the mold and hot plastic is spilled all over the table. Safety is something no one should just overlook. And if someone asks for an opinion on something, they get an honest answer. These things happen and seams more and more people will admit it when they have used it. My guess is there is more than coommon sence to this. Easy to a very few but not the majority. Frank

Please explain the issues you have with the BT and Dels injector. These are pretty simple units and other than the thickness of the tubes really would like to know what the issues are. On the BT injector if you want to rest it on the bottom and evacuate then dont lock the tip. If you want a glove full of hot plastic then dont lock the tip. If you want the nozzle to come off when you lift it off the mold dont lock the tip. If you like the Bears injector then you will like the Caney or Lure Craft injector, I believe they come from the same manufacturer. Yes I am saying they dont make there injectors they just resell them. Maybe the reason they have not changed them to add any safety items. Frank

I have poured alot of those lately. When I get an over pour I use scissors, just a little easier to control for me. But On one of my alumium molds I have a top with an injection port, this lets it be flat and has a resevior to draw from when it cools. You also can try and not fill it up so much but you will still get a concave top. Frank

I keep the one in the video at 400 all the time but have a smaller one the I use between 350 and 400. I dont think the pyrex is even close to its limit. But if you use say a butter knife to mix with the pinging of the glass could cause a breaking problem. Tempered glass is a real unknown. Frank
-
I think for about 5 bucks more you can get one with high sides, that one is better as the pyrex will move around when stirring. It might be called a skillet. Frank
-
I do it all the time. It will not keep it hot forever but it will let you shoot a few rounds. If you are fast enough you can shoot alot but you have to have a system so you reheat the sprues to add heat back into the original cups. You also have to keep it stirred up to keep it from skinning on the top. Frank

MF's does not have a lid that comes off. It is sealed and there is two holes in the top, a 2" and a 3/4". Nice mixer just does not work on my drums. You can turn these drums on there side, they actually make a dolly that you can tip it with. There is even one that has rollers so you can mix it by rolling it. Frank
-
I use a paint mixer blade that I welded a long tube on. It barely fits in the 2" hole but work well. It has a ring on the bottom so you can hit the sides and keep going. I use MF plastic and it really does not require alot of mixing so I just pump what I need when I need. Really depends on how much you use at a time, if you have to much time in between pumping then transfering it might be the right thing to do. Robert from MF did share one tip with me, he said if I got a conduit pipe and sealed the end. Then drilled holes out from the side and hooked up an aquarium pump to it I would not even have to stir just turn on the pump for awhile. It goes in the small hole so it wont be in the way of the drum pump. Just some ideas. Frank
-
Glad you had good results. I believe all of the current injectors fill from the tip, at least all the ones I have. Having done alot of injecting and had a few that just did not fill right seams to me that the flow is the most important. If it flows to slow it cools to fast and you get a cavity that is incomplete. There is another injector that some get from Napa auto parts that seams to be OK if you change the o rings to high heat ones. Maybe you can post a pic in the gallery when you get time. Frank
-
I dont know if your baits are already done but I do mine right after I finish pouring so I dont have an adhesion problem. Just food for thought. Frank
-
Actually I use griddles so the pyrex is not in direct contact with the heating element. I think you are on the right track but you might want to watch the temp real close. I believe the hot plate will get to a higher temp so try and not burn the plastic. I usually dip at least that many and never have to reheat. Frank
