How Many Think Adding Eyes To Soft Plastics Makes A Difference
Big Pancho replied to stephen's topic in Soft Plastics
Great question Stephen. This is a tough question to answer, Heres my take on this. I would think if you were making a shad style or fish shaped swimbait why not add the eyes to the lure. I feel if you can make a swimbait as realitic looking to a real fish than it will only increase your hook up ratio than a swimbait without eyes. Now many on here will respond and tell you that lures don't need eyes fish will eat them regardless. But try this out make a shad style lure with eyes and one without and see which one gets more strikes. Another hard question to answer would be scent or no scent? my answer would be scented baits or some type of fish attactant. Again just my personal prefference. BP -

dhockey thanks for the nice comment on my baits. I have been awaiting feedback on many of my baits slowly the feedback in a coming. Pretty soon I will get some time to go fishing.. It would be cool if folks on here would post up some fish kills on there homemade lure. Maybe we should start something here. i am still a rookie at this wonderful hobby of making baits. As time goes on I have been getting better at it and have got a good understanding how to make these things swim. It has cost me a grip of cash and time. But I have enjoyed every minute of it. Stay tuned in for a little special bait I just carved up, Thanks again on the comment. Have a great day. Frank

Cojode4 most arts and craft stores carry this clay. If not found there you can always do a search on the web and order it online. This stuff is real easy to work with. The only thing is if you handle the clay to long it will get to soft to continue the scuplting when the clay starts getting to soft stick it in the refrigerator for 10 minutes and it will cool back down. I hope this help. Pancho

Mark all of my carving are made with scupley bake clay. I am trying something a little new by getting the surfaces of these carving as smooth as I can. This should help with the pours coming out with a nice sheen. I will post up a few pours very soon. I just gave three of these guys a silicone bath last night. The other will soon follow. Stay tuned in many more designs in the works. So did you make the two piece mold we talked about last week? Talk to you soon. Frank

Mark I know you are determined to make your bait swim right with trying different methods. But like I said I have messed around with many different methods and the best one I came up with is the lead head I showed you. You can burn the bait as fast as you want and it will not roll. I trolled one of my baits behind a boat going 20 knots and the bait stayed true. Believe me brother try it I would not steer you wrong, I am sure you have made plenty two piece molds and making the lead head should not be to much of a problem for ya. If you need help just ask. I will do my best to help you and the brothers out. Pancho

Mark there will be no need to seal the two piece bondo mold. The only thing you will have to do is once you cast first half of the two piece mold you will need to use a lubricant and apply it to the first half of the mold before casting the second half. The lubricant will help you split the completed mold. Don't make the same mistake I made and forget the lubricant or you will have a complete block of bondo with the insert stuck in the block. Like I said learn from my mistakes. Just trying to help. If you have any question just ask. GOOD LUCK Frank

Mark here is a picture of the insert in one of my molds. You can see how far the insert is laying in the mold. This is the only way I could make my baits swim true. It does not matter how slow or fast the retrieve is the baits will run true and not roll. you will still have the side to side wobble but thats from the tail forcing its energy toward the body of the bait. Here is a little video on how my baits swim with my insert. Hope this help you and the boys out. Pancho

Hello Mark sorry I haven't been able to post this earlier. I have been battling a cold. Here is the in line weight I designed for my baits. As you can see the majority of the weight is pushed forward towards the front of the head. I designed this guy with two locking points. The first locking point is the big hole I drilled in the front of the head and the second is the little notch on the rear of the head. Once the hot plastic is poured into the mold it will flow through and around the two locking points and this thing will not move what so ever. The neat thing about the head is that it does not matter slow or fast the bait will always run true. It took me some time to figure this one out and hope this helps you and the boys out a bit in making your baits swim true. I made the proto type head out of scupley bake clay and follow up by making a two piece bondo mold. The key is two make two bondo molds. Why I say this is because if you start pouring the head rapidly the bondo mold does not like excessive heat. Make the two molds and pour one at a time and rotate the molds so that the molds last a bit longer. Bondo is a good inexpensive product to use for this application. One of these days I will have someone make me an aluminum mold for these heads. But for right now this will have to do. Well if you have any further questions please just ask. Pancho

Mark there is still to much weight in the rear of the hook. You need to get that weight away from the Mid section of the bait and place the weight right smack dab in the head section of the bait like lined up with the eyeballs. What is going to happen with what you got going on there is that since the weights are not centered exactly in the head section the bait is going to want to roll or lean to one side or the other. I will take a picture of my insert and help you out by showing you what I am talking about,. Again remove the existing lead off the falcon hook and pinch on one of those leads so it lines up right in the head section of the mold. Believe me brother just trying to save you some tine. I learned the hard way util I came up a way to make this thing successful. I will try to post the picture in a couple of days. Pancho.

Mark if your going to use that Falcon weight hook remove all the lead off of it. Pinch the big split shots right behind the hook tie. If you need to sand the egg sinker so be it. I would think two of the larger egg sinker might just work. If this don't work let me know and i will show you what I got going on with my baits. PANCHO

Mark here is a little tip for you to get that thing to swim true and not on its side at a fast retrieve. You need to place the weight in the head of the bait. Mark I not a pro at this but it took me about three month and about 150.00 dollar of bondo molds to make the inserts work on my bigger baits. I have tested my baits at different speeds and I got them running true at all speeds, Give it a try. Another suggestion is to add just a bit more weight than 1/4 oz. I would start with at least 3/8 oz and move up to 1/2 oz. i personally am using 3/4 and 1 oz inserts in my larger bulky baits. I hope this helps you and others. If you would like to see a picture on what I am talking about let me know and I will post a picture of my inserts. Frank

Nova great looking pours. Can you post up a picture of the 3 chamber cup I am very curious on what it looks like. Is this something you made? I got a mental picture of the cup but I am trying to figure out the pour spout when all three colors combine when you pour the plastic, Are you willing to share your Technic? Your pours are some of the best I have ever seen. Keep em coming I am soaking in all this awesome information you pros are willing to share. Thanks in advance Frank
